<p>After winding their way up a hundred-foot-tall pathway in the Czech Republic set atop a mountain peak (itself located over 3,000 feet above sea level), visitors are presented with two options: walk all the way back down, or take a ride on the slide that shoots back down through the center of the spiralling walkways on all sides.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87668" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/mountain-spiral-walkway-468x702.jpg" alt="mountain spiral walkway" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87667" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/mountain-viewing-net-platform-468x702.jpg" alt="mountain viewing net platform" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p>Another feature for daredevils comes in the form of netting suspended from a section along the top. Those who wish to can walk and lay on this mesh, experiencing whatever level of terror they can tolerate.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87666" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/mountain-steel-suspended-wood-468x702.jpg" alt="mountain steel suspended wood" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87662" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/mountain-in-fog-468x702.jpg" alt="mountain in fog" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p>Fránek Architects designed this massive wooden structure, dubbed Sky Walk and aimed at giving viewers a number of twists, turns and chances to find the perfect vista while they work their way up.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87665" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/mountain-views-below-468x702.jpg" alt="mountain views below" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87660" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/mountain-path-brave-468x702.jpg" alt="mountain path brave" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p>&#8220;It offers an endless amount of views, situations and moments where an indiscernible human being enters the depth and emerges on the outskirts of this natural structure,&#8221; said Fránek.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87663" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/mountain-emergency-exit-468x702.jpg" alt="mountain emergency exit" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87661" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/mountain-structural-supports-468x702.jpg" alt="mountain structural supports" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p>The pathways are suspended from a central structural core made up of metal-joined wood trusses, forming a space frame that also supports the stainless steel slide more brave guests will opt to take for their return trip.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87664" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/mountain-central-truss-frame-468x702.jpg" alt="mountain central truss frame" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p>Located as it is on top of a tall and exposed mountain, the structure is heavily reinforced throughout and tied to concrete footings buried deep in the ground. It also features an emergency spiral staircase down its center. Travelers can get to this wheel-accessible pedestrian viewing spiral via a chairlift at the foot of the mountain, near Dolni Morava.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87669" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/mountain-architecture-distance-468x334.jpg" alt="mountain architecture distance" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87659" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/mountain-side-view-468x702.jpg" alt="mountain side view" width="468" height="702" /></p>
<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t know of any other timber construction with steel elements of a similar size and purpose,&#8221; Fránek said. &#8220;There are constructions of a similar size but ours takes on an abstract form that suggests the flight of a nocturnal butterfly whose path is seemingly chaotic.&#8221;</p>

<p>Pushing the limits of the traditional printing craft, these stunning little Japanese flip books illustrate the power of slicing, splicing, zooming and panning, all to create a series of vertigo-inducing effects, dizzying optical illusions and plot twists that take on a quite literal dimension.</p>

<p>Flipping through the pages of these creations of artist <a href="http://www.seigensha.com/?s=flipbook%2B&amp;post_type=books&amp;x=0&amp;y=0">Mou Hitotsu</a> reveals a series of hidden surprises, including embedded objects and stories that unfold in the void space cut out progressively in sequential sheets of each volume.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-73225" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/gif-flip-book-design.gif" alt="gif flip book design" width="468" height="237" /></p>
<p>Some of these play into abstract and surreal short stories about planetary systems or biological processes while others are simply used to convey holiday-themed wishes.</p>

<p>Spotted by <a href="http://travelry.co.uk/post/102647065041/spotted-these-incredible-japanese-flip-books-at">Travelry</a> during a book convention, there are a number of works in this series from <a href="http://www.jpbooks.co.uk/">JP Books</a>, each one playfully using similar devices to tell different tales as the pages unfold.</p>

<p>New Zealand artist, illusionist and urbanist <a href="http://mikehewson.co.nz/">Mark Hewson</a> has a good many tricks up his sleeve involving spatial deception, convincing citizens there is less (or more) to their city than can ordinarily be seen.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="illusion fake sky bridge" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/illusion-fake-sky-bridge.jpg" width="468" height="759" /></p>
<p>His first trick in this series: disguising an ordinary street-crossing skyway from a series of key vantage points. But even from alternate angles where the lines do not sync up, the effect is dizzying. Our pattern-seeking brains keep looking for transparency or reflection where there is just a solid painting.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="optical urban illusion art" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/optical-urban-illusion-art.jpg" width="468" height="723" /></p>
<p>Other illusions in his repertoire involve mirroring or warping unseen elements behind solid surfaces or sheets of material. Again, this toying with voids and our structural expectations induces odd forms of visual vertigo.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="optical trick magic photois" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/optical-trick-magic-photois.jpg" width="468" height="633" /></p>
<p>In previous projects, like the Lost Space Installation, he has worked with gaps and openings, filling them in with imaginary scenes that range from plausible to impossible. While these may be more obviously fake on the surface, they create a nonetheless potent sense of spatial distortion and disorientation.</p>
