Two minimalist stacked volumes bring some modern silhouettes to a meadow in the Rhine Valley. K_M Architektur set one on top of the other at a perpendicular angle so the top volume could project out over the grass, and the lower one’s roof could serve as at terrace.

The top floor of this house in Croatia by Idis Turato telescopes out over the bottom floor to gaze at the mountains and sea as well as the home’s own swimming pool. The upper volume is weighted carefully to truly cantilever, supporting itself without the need for stabilizers.

There’s little danger of high tide getting inside this beach house on the Italian coastline, despite the fact that it’s literally a few feet away from the water. Architecture studio Zero85 took inspiration from the region’s old fishing machine structures for this simple home, placing the whole rectilinear building atop an elevated steel jetty.
