<p>Donald Trump is destined to leave his mark on the world stage but the world&#8217;s <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2015/03/29/urban-spock-20-fascinating-leonard-nimoy-graffiti-tributes/">graffiti</a> artists have been leaving <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2016/11/13/trumped-up-stores-businesses-trading-on-the-trump-name/">Trump-related</a> marks for some time.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-100385" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/trump-graffiti-1f-644x405.jpg" alt="trump-graffiti-1f" width="644" height="405" /></p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/23/world/americas/donald-trump-mexico.html">notorious “wall”</a> Trump has theatrically threatened to build along the US-Mexico border already exists – in parts – and older sections have been renewed, reinforced and in some places made redundant. One example of the latter can be found about a mile west of Tijuana airport: the so-called “old border wall” situated on American territory.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-100382" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/trump-graffiti-1c-644x437.jpg" alt="trump-graffiti-1c" width="644" height="437" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-100384" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/trump-graffiti-1e-644x340.jpg" alt="trump-graffiti-1e" width="644" height="340" /></p>
<p>Graffiti collective Indecline created the above <a href="http://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/2015/nov/06/stringers-rape-trump-mural/#" target="_blank">“¡Rape Trump!” mural</a> on a section of the rusty, corrugated <a href="http://www.sinembargo.mx/10-05-2016/1658959">sheet metal wall</a> in late 2015, roughly six months before Trump clinched the Republican nomination for the U.S. presidency. Check out <a href="http://thisisindecline.com/flicks/rape-trump" target="_blank">this video</a> by Indecline posted at their website. The caption “¡Rape Trump!”, by the way, is a sort of Spanish pun – the word “rape” translates roughly to crop, trim, shave or snuff while the ball gag adds a dash of kinkiness to the mix.</p>
<h4>Great Brickin&#8217;</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-100388" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/trump-graffiti-2a-644x362.jpg" alt="trump-graffiti-2a" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-100389" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/trump-graffiti-2b.jpg" alt="trump-graffiti-2b" width="640" height="640" /></p>
<p>So crowdfunding graffiti is a thing now: graffiti artists The Paintsmiths paid for <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BM_gmwOgC9x/">the above mural</a> through online sales of their photo-book <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2121967636/are-we-there-yet/description">Are We There Yet?</a> The artwork features Trump figuratively and literally walling himself in, and can be found at the corner of Nelson Street and All Saints Street <a href="http://www.bristol247.com/channel/culture/art/street-art/new-trump-street-art-appears-in-bristol">in Bristol</a>, UK.</p>
<h4>Where&#8217;s Wall-Donald?</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-100390" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/trump-graffiti-3a-644x623.jpg" alt="trump-graffiti-3a" width="644" height="623" /></p>
<p>It&#8217;s not as if Donald Trump just popped up out of nowhere: the larger-than-life real estate developer took over The Trump Organization way back in 1971 when The Donald was only 25 years old. Indeed <a href="http://www.funnyjunk.com/channel/trump/Trump+graffiti/cTYlLpG/">Trump was here</a>, was there, and now it seems he&#8217;s everywhere.</p>
<h4>Punchdrunk Trump</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-100407" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/trump-graffiti-4d-644x432.jpg" alt="trump-graffiti-4d" width="644" height="432" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-100392" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/trump-graffiti-4c-644x245.jpg" alt="trump-graffiti-4c" width="644" height="245" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-100393" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/trump-graffiti-4b-644x429.jpg" alt="trump-graffiti-4b" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>The island nation of Malta is <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/03/world/what-in-the-world/malta-graffiti-street-art.html">chock-a-block with ruins</a> of all ages, many of which have been co-opted by graffiti artists under the government&#8217;s benign gaze. The unusual and <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/anti-trump-street-art_us_56f69e1be4b0143a9b485d86">intriguing work</a> above, by Czech artist <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Chemisgraffiti/">ChemiS</a>, complements abandoned and deteriorated architecture by featuring a young boxer and Donald Trump. Whatever one&#8217;s political bent, you can&#8217;t deny this particular work is a knockout.</p>

<p>Working primarily in bold, black ink, these 13 top tattoo artists working in Kyoto, London, Berlin, Kiev and throughout the United States stand out for geometric and illustrative styles that put the emphasis on line work. Whether they prefer minimalist compositions or cover entire torsos with amazingly intricate shapes, they create living works of art that are literally walking advertisements for their talent.</p>
<h4>Thieves of Tower</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84795" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/tattoo-thieves-of-tower-1-468x468.jpg" alt="tattoo thieves of tower 1" width="468" height="468" /></p>

<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84793" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/tattoo-thieves-of-tower-3-468x554.jpg" alt="tattoo thieves of tower 3" width="468" height="554" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84792" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/tattoo-thieves-of-tower-4-468x468.jpg" alt="tattoo thieves of tower 4" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>North Carolina-based tattoo duo Houston and Dagny aka <a href="http://www.thievesoftower.com/tattoo/">Thieves of Tower</a> have developed a distinctive style, often covering large areas of the body in sweeping landscapes full of stark architectural details. Legs might become a diptych of bold black lines contrasted with clouds, and spires rise from a cityscape stretching across a chest.</p>
<h4>Lisa Orth</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84783" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/tattoo-lisa-orth-4-468x468.jpg" alt="tattoo lisa orth 4" width="468" height="468" /></p>

<p>Frequently working in Los Angeles and traveling around the country, Seattle-based artist <a href="http://lisaorth.com/tattoos.html">Lisa Orth </a>works in a dark, graphic style reminiscent of old woodcut prints and etchings.</p>
<h4>Maxime Buchi</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84777" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/tattoo-mxm-6-468x468.jpg" alt="tattoo mxm 6" width="468" height="468" /></p>

<p>Working primarily out of Sang Bleu studio in London, <a href="http://mxmttt.tumblr.com">Maxime Buchi</a> (better known as M-X-M) is a modern master of both medieval etching styles and geometric work, often combining them for an intricate and instantly recognizable result.</p>

<p>Want to get tattooed the old-fashioned way? Hand-poking has gotten a bad rep because it’s so accessible to amateurs, but there are masters of this ancient craft who choose to work without machines professionally. Check out <a href="https://instagram.com/graceneutral/?hl=en">Grace Neutral</a>, who has gotten incredibly proficient at the process over the years.</p>

<p>The scaffolding used by a street artist to complete large murals becomes a tiny, less-than-private home away from home in a literal sense with ’24/7,’ an installation at the Memorie Urbane Street Art Festival in Gaeta, Italy. Playing on the concept of an artist-in-residence, the project by Milan-based <a href="http://www.fra-biancoshock.org">Fra.Biancoshock</a> highlights the stark difference in the working environments of street artists versus studio artists, and makes a statement on the living conditions of artists in general.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/scaffolding-skyscraper-2-468x370.jpg" alt="scaffolding skyscraper 2" width="468" height="370" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-78580" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/scaffolding-skyscraper-3-468x751.jpg" alt="scaffolding skyscraper 3" width="468" height="751" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-78581" /></p>
<p>Street artists work in public by necessity, every stage of their work on display for passersby. Privacy isn’t really an option when you’re painting urban surfaces. Some artists spend so much time on scaffolding, it can start to feel like a second home. </p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/scaffolding-skyscraper-5-468x370.jpg" alt="scaffolding skyscraper 5" width="468" height="370" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-78583" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/scaffolding-skyscraper-6-468x370.jpg" alt="scaffolding skyscraper 6" width="468" height="370" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-78584" /></p>
<p>Fra.Biancoshock decided to run with that idea and create his own four-story residence including a small studio, dining area, bedroom and rooftop terrace within just a few square meters. </p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/scaffolding-skyscraper-3-468x751.jpg" alt="scaffolding skyscraper 3" width="468" height="751" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-78581" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/livable-billboard-468x570.jpg" alt="livable billboard" width="468" height="570" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-78585" /></p>
<p>Open to the elements and to prying eyes, this temporary artist residence makes the <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2013/04/15/livable-billboard-offers-artists-a-temporary-home/">livable billboard created by the paper company Scribe in Mexico City</a> look luxurious by comparison. That project offered an elevated living space for artists mounted to the back of the billboard they were painting as an ad for the company. </p>

<h4>Jenny Holzer</h4>

<p>American artist <a href="http://www.jennyholzer.com/list.php">Jenny Holzer</a> uses words on an unprecedented scale, especially with her outdoor light projections, introducing commentary to public spaces. While the words were her own from the time she started in 1977 until roughly 2001, she has begun working with texts written by others, including the works of great literary figures and sources like declassified US Army documents from the war in Iraq.</p>

<p>Trees come to life in the sculptural images of deities and spirits from Cambodian culture in the series Cambodian Trees by French artist <a href="http://www.clementbriend.com/cambodian%20trees.html">Clement Briend</a>. Highlighting the nature that can be found within urban contexts, the series transformed the streets of Paris. Says brined, &#8220;Such nocturnal visions allow us to grasp the way magic profoundly influences how Cambodian people perceive the world.&#8221;</p>
<h4>Luftwerk</h4>

Artist duo Luftwerk, made up of Petra Bachmaier and Sean Gallero, integrated Chicago&#8217;s iconic Cloud Gate into a light art installation called <a href="http://www.luftwerk.net/">Luminous Field</a>. The work used the reflective qualities of the sculpture to enhance and magnify imagery that was projected onto the ground around it.</p>
<h4>Usman Haque</h4>

<p>Commissioned by the City of Santa Monica for Glow 08,<a href="http://www.haque.co.uk/primalsource.php"> &#8216;Primal Source&#8217; by Usman Haque</a> was projected onto a large-scale waterscreen/mist projection system at a beach location near the city&#8217;s pier to create a mirage-like effect. The light changes in response to the sounds emanating from the crowd. &#8220;Some modes created &#8216;captures&#8217; whose colour, shape and movement followed the frequency and amplitude dynamics of individual syllables and sentences picked up; other modes responded to wider collective phenomena, e.g. distorting a grid in response to the crowd volume, or creating a rush of wind through a wheat-field landscape.&#8221;</p>
<h4>Paolo Buroni<br />

<p>Classic art comes to the streets for all to see when Italian multimedia artist <a href="http://www.paoloburoni.com/">Paolo Buroni </a>projects images onto architecture in public squares. &#8220;I like to create change &#8211; to change reality with imagination,&#8221; says the artist. His works have been commissioned for events like the Venice Biennale and has appeared in Nuremburg,, Budapest, Istanbul, Paris and Seoul.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-73078" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/scalpel-landscapes-1-468x319.jpg" alt="scalpel landscapes 1" width="468" height="319" /></p>
<p>Bird&#8217;s-eye views of cities around the world, from Paris to Hong Kong, are visualized in the form of surgical tools like scalpels and skin graft blades against glossy black surfaces by famed British artist Damien Hirst. The &#8216;Black Scalpel Cityscapes&#8217; series continues the artist&#8217;s method of using sharp metal objects to create complex compositions in stark monochrome.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-73076" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/scalpel-landscapes-3-468x320.jpg" alt="scalpel landscapes 3" width="468" height="320" /> <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-73075" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/scalpel-landscapes-4-468x316.jpg" alt="scalpel landscapes 4" width="468" height="316" /></p>
<p>The depiction of these cities (many of which are sites of recent conflict) from an aerial viewpoint references the &#8216;all-seeing eye&#8217; of constant surveillance in the modern era. Look closely and among the blades and surgical tools you&#8217;ll also see small items that relate to each individual city, like cheap silver keychains of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and even silvery condom wrappers.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-73081" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/scalpel-cityscapes-8-468x299.jpg" alt="scalpel cityscapes 8" width="468" height="299" /> <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-73080" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/scalpel-cityscapes-9-468x294.jpg" alt="scalpel cityscapes 9" width="468" height="294" /></p>
<p>In<a href="http://whitecube.com/channel/in_the_gallery_current/damien_hirst_black_scalpel_cityscapes_sao_paulo_2014/"> a video interview with White Cube</a>, Hirst explains that he began working with scalpel blades &#8220;because they&#8217;ve got kind of a nice and nasty feel to them.&#8221; Flying over Milton Keynes, a town in England, he noted how modern and unnatural the landscape looked, sparking the idea for the series. In addition to cities like Baghdad, which have a symbolic connection to the medium used, Hirst depicted cities that are personally meaningful to him.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-73079" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/scalpel-cityscapes-10-468x264.jpg" alt="scalpel cityscapes 10" width="468" height="264" /> <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-73074" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/scalpel-landscapes-6-468x315.jpg" alt="scalpel landscapes 6" width="468" height="315" /> <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-73073" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/scalpel-landscapes-7-468x354.jpg" alt="scalpel landscapes 7" width="468" height="354" /></p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve done one of the Vatican where I&#8217;ve used lots of religious symbols. So I think you try to make them into a portrait, but always from a distance they&#8217;re going to look totally like a photograph.&#8221;</p>
