<p>Last time we checked in with Phlegm (<a href="https://weburbanist.com/2011/01/29/stunning-black-and-white-street-art-illustrations-by-phlegm/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">way back in 2011</a>) the artist said he was feeling a bit disillusioned after getting “sucked into the art machine” and decided to only produce art that was made by his own hands, with no shows planned in the foreseeable future. Eight years later, after adorning countless building facades with fantastical creatures and scenes, he’s clearly ready for bigger and better things. <a href="https://phlegmcomicnews.blogspot.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Last year, he said he was feeling energized</a>, noting “I’ve unlocked something and feel more driven than I think I ever have.” It looks like this show is part of that burst of energy and inspiration.</p>

<p>Set within <a href="https://www.eyewitness-sheffield.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Eyewitness Works</a>, a restored 19th century brick building that once housed craftsmen producing pocket knives and other cutlery, “Mausoleum of the Giants” almost feels like an invitation into the artist’s mind, allowing visitors to roam around and view colossal sculptures from all angles. It’s always exciting to see artists experiment with translating their individual style to a new medium, and this exhibition doesn’t disappoint.</p>

<p>“Sheffield as the stage for this epic showcase was no accident. With local industrial buildings often forming the backdrop for his murals in the city, an old factory complex is the perfect location for presenting such a poetic and personal undertaking and bringing Phlegm&#8217;s iconic characters to life. Imagined as beings whose life spans over thousands of years, these peaceful beasts have seen rivers erode and mountains change. With their final days coming slowly but surely, the giants are ready for their eternal rest, giving everyone enough time to meet them, mourn them and make peace with their ending.”</p>
<p>The show is free and will be up through April 6th, 2019. If you can’t make it there in person, check out the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/phlegmgiants/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">#phlegmgiants tag on Instagram.</a></p>

<p>Don&#8217;t adjust your monitor &#8211; there&#8217;s nothing wrong with the images of these sculptures, rugs, furniture and even full-scale architecture. Playing with the aesthetics of digital errors, the glitches are carved, woven or painted right into physical, three-dimensional designs.</p>
<h4>Good Vibrations by Ferruccio Laviani</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102488" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/glitch-laviani-1-644x911.jpg" alt="glitch laviani 1" width="644" height="911" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102491" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/ferruccio-laviani-3-644x332.jpg" alt="ferruccio laviani 3" width="644" height="332" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102495" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/laviani-glitch-7-644x488.jpg" alt="laviani glitch 7" width="644" height="488" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102490" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/ferruccio-laviani-4-644x484.jpg" alt="ferruccio laviani 4" width="644" height="484" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102489" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/ferruccio-laviani-5-644x484.jpg" alt="ferruccio laviani 5" width="644" height="484" /></p>
<p>Invited to collaborate with a manufacturer of baroque furniture, artist <a href="http://now.lincoln.com/cabinet-of-curiosity/">Ferruccio Laviani</a> took an unconventional approach, programming computer-controlled robotic routers to cut glitches directly into the wood for a warped effect. The result is a series called ‘F* THE CLASSICS!’ and the most striking piece is the ‘Good Vibrations’ cabinet. “In the course of my research for Good Vibrations, I ended up cutting out images from old analog videos, when you fast-forward a tape and get a frozen image that’s all twisted.”</p>
<h4>Glitch Rugs by Faig Ahmed</h4>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102493" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/ahmed-rug-4-644x403.jpg" alt="ahmed rug 4" width="644" height="403" /> <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102494" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/ahmed-rug-3-644x407.jpg" alt="ahmed rug 3" width="644" height="407" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102484" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/glitch-ahmed-3-644x274.jpg" alt="glitch ahmed 3" width="644" height="274" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102483" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/glitch-ahmed-4-644x429.jpg" alt="glitch ahmed 4" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102482" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/glitch-ahmed-5-644x505.jpg" alt="glitch ahmed 5" width="644" height="505" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102481" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/glitch-ahmed-6-644x318.jpg" alt="glitch ahmed 6" width="644" height="318" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102492" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/ahmed-rugs-644x850.jpg" alt="ahmed rugs" width="644" height="850" /></p>
<p>Textile artist <a href="http://www.faigahmed.com">Faig Ahmed</a> weaves distortions into traditional rug patterns from India, Persia, Turkey and the Caucasus, making them look stretched, pixelated, warped and otherwise glitched and mutated for a fun modern twist on a beloved classic.</p>
<h4>Pixelated Wood Sculptures by Hsu Tung Han</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102477" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/glitch-tsu-4-644x804.jpg" alt="glitch tsu 4" width="644" height="804" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102476" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/glitch-tsu-5-644x507.jpg" alt="glitch tsu 5" width="644" height="507" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102480" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/glitch-tsu-1-644x483.jpg" alt="glitch tsu 1" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102479" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/glitch-tsu-2-644x640.jpg" alt="glitch tsu 2" width="644" height="640" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102478" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/glitch-tsu-3-644x768.jpg" alt="glitch tsu 3" width="644" height="768" /></p>
<p>Carved from teak, African wax wood or walnut, <a href="http://blog.xuite.net/hsutunghan6/wood">Hsu Tung Han’s </a>figurative sculptures dissolve into cubes as if glitching out of existence in three dimensions, making it seem like they’re disappearing or in mid-transition before our eyes.</p>
<h4>Real Life Glitch Building: House of Electronic Arts Basel</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102475" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/glitch-building-1-644x431.jpg" alt="glitch building 1" width="644" height="431" /></p>

<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-102473" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/glitch-building-3.jpg" alt="glitch building 3" width="644" height="349" /></p>

<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/cIT9Cr_Dn8o?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>There’s nothing wrong with this photograph of Switzerland’s <a href="http://www.alphr.com/life-culture/1001539/this-trippy-building-is-a-real-life-glitch">House of Electronic Arts Basel building</a> &#8211; it’s the building itself that’s glitched. Berlin-based art studio !Mediengruppe Bitnik was invited to create ‘H3333333K,’ a play on the structure’s German name of ‘HeK,’ as a permanent exterior display. “The idea was to cast something fluid, non-permanent like a software error into something physical and permanent, like architecture,” says the group.</p>
<h4>Warped Forms by Paul Kaptein</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102465" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/kaptein-2-644x450.jpg" alt="kaptein 2" width="644" height="450" /></p>

<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102463" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/kapein-4-644x553.jpg" alt="kapein 4" width="644" height="553" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102462" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/kaptein-5-644x796.jpg" alt="kaptein 5" width="644" height="796" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102461" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/kaptein-6-644x438.jpg" alt="kaptein 6" width="644" height="438" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102460" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/kaptein-7-644x475.jpg" alt="kaptein 7" width="644" height="475" /></p>
<p>Based in Perth, Australia, artist <a href="http://www.paulkaptein.com">Paul Kaptein</a> carves laminated wood into warped figures that look almost normal from some angles, and entirely abstract from others, unrecognizable as human bodies. “Paul’s work, seemingly bent through time and space, taps into his medium of emptiness, responding to the gap between immateriality and materiality &#8211; through the energy we call potential,” reads his artist statement. “His work is full of the boundless energy of potentiality loops or loops of potentiality or the realization that potential is the energy that constantly moves and transforms. Potential is the force that grabs ideas and translates them into being &#8211; it is a poetic energy of necessity and a necessary energy for poetics.”</p>

<p>Michelangelo&#8217;s David may always represent a pinnacle of artistic achievement in figurative sculpture, but modern artists are adding some brilliant 21st-century elements to the mix in the form of glitches, kinetic parts, innovative methods and materials, and context from the digital era.</p>
<h4>Hollow Humans by Park Ki Pyung</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102287" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/park-ki-kyung-1-644x804.jpg" alt="park ki kyung 1" width="644" height="804" /></p>

<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102285" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/park-ki-kyung-3-644x821.jpg" alt="park ki kyung 3" width="644" height="821" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102289" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/park-ki-kyung-5-644x430.jpg" alt="park ki kyung 5" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p>They appear to be impossibly thin veneers of stone, but these eerie sculptures by South Korean artist <a href="https://www.instagram.com/park_ki_pyung/">Park Ki Kyung</a> are actually resin on a steel frame. The figures appear incomplete or fractured “to describe condition of emptiness,” says the artist. “I also use shape of human body with excluded front face, so that I can delete unique characteristics of each person. I describe images of ancient battle scene to show violence against self.”</p>
<h4>Anatomical Sculptures by Claude-Olivier Guay</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102264" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/claude-olivier-guay-1-644x502.jpg" alt="claude olivier guay 1" width="644" height="502" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102263" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/claude-olivier-guay-2-644x522.jpg" alt="claude olivier guay 2" width="644" height="522" /></p>

<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102261" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/claude-olivier-guay-4-644x430.jpg" alt="claude olivier guay 4" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://player.vimeo.com/video/159703092' allowfullscreen frameborder='0'></iframe></div></p>
<p>Each of these paneled human heads dramatically opens to reveal a matrix of wires inside, hand-bent by artist <a href="https://www.claudeolivierguay.com">Claude-Olivier Guay</a> with no more than a piece of pliers. In one remarkable case, a human torso shows us its skeletal framework, but what’s inside isn’t what it seems: the wire bends itself into an animal shape and gets down on all fours before transforming back into human form.</p>
<h3>Wood Sculptures by Willy Verginer</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102279" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/willy-verginer-1-644x430.jpg" alt="willy verginer 1" width="644" height="430" /></p>

<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102276" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/willy-verginer-4-644x965.jpg" alt="willy verginer 4" width="644" height="965" /></p>
<p>A child clutches a leaking gas can, families swim in tainted water and men pray over barrels of oil in this series by Italian sculptor <a href="http://www.verginer.com/eng/index.php">Willy Verginer</a> highlighting environmental degradation. The sculptures are made of wood and minimally painted for a graphic appearance.</p>
<h4>Dissolving Children by Lene Kilde</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102275" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/lene-kilde-1-644x1198.jpg" alt="lene kilde 1" width="644" height="1198" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102274" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/lene-kilde-2-644x839.jpg" alt="lene kilde 2" width="644" height="839" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102273" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/lene-kilde-3-644x696.jpg" alt="lene kilde 3" width="644" height="696" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102272" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/lene-kilde-4-644x549.jpg" alt="lene kilde 4" width="644" height="549" /></p>
<p>Limbs are often all that remain of children that have otherwise disappeared in the minimalist wire mesh sculptures of Norwegian artist <a href="http://www.lenekilde.com">Lene Kilde</a>. Though the works may appear haunting and even mournful, the artist intends for the blank spaces to be filled in by the viewer’s mind, perhaps with their own images or memories.</p>
<h4>Pixelated Wood by Hsu Tung Han</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102271" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/hsu-tung-han-1-644x640.jpg" alt="hsu tung han 1" width="644" height="640" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102270" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/hsu-tung-han-2-644x768.jpg" alt="hsu tung han 2" width="644" height="768" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102269" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/hsu-tung-han-3-644x859.jpg" alt="hsu tung han 3" width="644" height="859" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102268" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/hsu-tung-han-4-644x804.jpg" alt="hsu tung han 4" width="644" height="804" /></p>
<p>Bodies in motion seem to be dissolving into pixels before our eyes, embodying a clash between the digital and the analog. Artist <a href="http://blog.xuite.net/hsutunghan6/wood">Hsu Tung Han</a> crafts walnut, teak or African wax wood into human figures interspersed wit blocks. In this case, the glitch effect feels less about corrupted data and more about existential and spiritual matters, as if the figures aren’t entirely tethered to the physical plane.</p>
