<p>Don&#8217;t adjust your monitor &#8211; there&#8217;s nothing wrong with the images of these sculptures, rugs, furniture and even full-scale architecture. Playing with the aesthetics of digital errors, the glitches are carved, woven or painted right into physical, three-dimensional designs.</p>
<h4>Good Vibrations by Ferruccio Laviani</h4>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102488" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/glitch-laviani-1-644x911.jpg" alt="glitch laviani 1" width="644" height="911" /></p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102491" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/ferruccio-laviani-3-644x332.jpg" alt="ferruccio laviani 3" width="644" height="332" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102495" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/laviani-glitch-7-644x488.jpg" alt="laviani glitch 7" width="644" height="488" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102490" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/ferruccio-laviani-4-644x484.jpg" alt="ferruccio laviani 4" width="644" height="484" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102489" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/ferruccio-laviani-5-644x484.jpg" alt="ferruccio laviani 5" width="644" height="484" /></p>
<p>Invited to collaborate with a manufacturer of baroque furniture, artist <a href="http://now.lincoln.com/cabinet-of-curiosity/">Ferruccio Laviani</a> took an unconventional approach, programming computer-controlled robotic routers to cut glitches directly into the wood for a warped effect. The result is a series called ‘F* THE CLASSICS!’ and the most striking piece is the ‘Good Vibrations’ cabinet. “In the course of my research for Good Vibrations, I ended up cutting out images from old analog videos, when you fast-forward a tape and get a frozen image that’s all twisted.”</p>
<h4>Glitch Rugs by Faig Ahmed</h4>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102493" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/ahmed-rug-4-644x403.jpg" alt="ahmed rug 4" width="644" height="403" /> <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102494" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/ahmed-rug-3-644x407.jpg" alt="ahmed rug 3" width="644" height="407" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102484" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/glitch-ahmed-3-644x274.jpg" alt="glitch ahmed 3" width="644" height="274" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102483" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/glitch-ahmed-4-644x429.jpg" alt="glitch ahmed 4" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102482" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/glitch-ahmed-5-644x505.jpg" alt="glitch ahmed 5" width="644" height="505" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102481" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/glitch-ahmed-6-644x318.jpg" alt="glitch ahmed 6" width="644" height="318" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102492" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/ahmed-rugs-644x850.jpg" alt="ahmed rugs" width="644" height="850" /></p>
<p>Textile artist <a href="http://www.faigahmed.com">Faig Ahmed</a> weaves distortions into traditional rug patterns from India, Persia, Turkey and the Caucasus, making them look stretched, pixelated, warped and otherwise glitched and mutated for a fun modern twist on a beloved classic.</p>
<h4>Pixelated Wood Sculptures by Hsu Tung Han</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102477" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/glitch-tsu-4-644x804.jpg" alt="glitch tsu 4" width="644" height="804" /></p>

<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102480" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/glitch-tsu-1-644x483.jpg" alt="glitch tsu 1" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102479" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/glitch-tsu-2-644x640.jpg" alt="glitch tsu 2" width="644" height="640" /></p>

<p>Carved from teak, African wax wood or walnut, <a href="http://blog.xuite.net/hsutunghan6/wood">Hsu Tung Han’s </a>figurative sculptures dissolve into cubes as if glitching out of existence in three dimensions, making it seem like they’re disappearing or in mid-transition before our eyes.</p>
<h4>Real Life Glitch Building: House of Electronic Arts Basel</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102475" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/glitch-building-1-644x431.jpg" alt="glitch building 1" width="644" height="431" /></p>

<p>There’s nothing wrong with this photograph of Switzerland’s <a href="http://www.alphr.com/life-culture/1001539/this-trippy-building-is-a-real-life-glitch">House of Electronic Arts Basel building</a> &#8211; it’s the building itself that’s glitched. Berlin-based art studio !Mediengruppe Bitnik was invited to create ‘H3333333K,’ a play on the structure’s German name of ‘HeK,’ as a permanent exterior display. “The idea was to cast something fluid, non-permanent like a software error into something physical and permanent, like architecture,” says the group.</p>
<h4>Warped Forms by Paul Kaptein</h4>

<p>Based in Perth, Australia, artist <a href="http://www.paulkaptein.com">Paul Kaptein</a> carves laminated wood into warped figures that look almost normal from some angles, and entirely abstract from others, unrecognizable as human bodies. “Paul’s work, seemingly bent through time and space, taps into his medium of emptiness, responding to the gap between immateriality and materiality &#8211; through the energy we call potential,” reads his artist statement. “His work is full of the boundless energy of potentiality loops or loops of potentiality or the realization that potential is the energy that constantly moves and transforms. Potential is the force that grabs ideas and translates them into being &#8211; it is a poetic energy of necessity and a necessary energy for poetics.”</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-52531" alt="Apple Maps Glitch Art 1" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Apple-Maps-Glitch-Art-1.jpg" width="468" height="420" /></p>
<p>All of the notorious glitches on Apple&#8217;s Maps app make it incredibly frustrating to use for practical purposes, but it still has value &#8211; as accidental art. When two-dimensional images are incorrectly mapped onto three-dimensional topography, the results can be fascinating, creating landscapes and architecture that look alien and futuristic.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-52530" alt="Apple Maps Glitch Art 2" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Apple-Maps-Glitch-Art-2.jpg" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-52529" alt="Apple Maps Glitch Art 3" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Apple-Maps-Glitch-Art-3.jpg" width="468" height="561" /></p>
<p>Peder Norrby, founder of graphics company Trapcode, has collected the many glitches on the Apple iOS Maps app into <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/pedernorrby/sets/72157632277119513/">a trippy gallery on Flickr</a>. Houses in Barcelona appear to be puking trees from their windows. A vortex has opened in the middle of a Stockholm highway. Skyscrapers and stacked shipping containers look like they&#8217;re melting.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-52528" alt="Apple Maps Glitch Art 4" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Apple-Maps-Glitch-Art-4.jpg" width="468" height="617" /></p>

<p>In this parallel universe, the laws of physics have apparently been suspended. Norrby explains that some structures, like bridges, viaducts, tunnels and roller coasters, are too complex for the app&#8217;s algorithms to handle. While criticism of Apple&#8217;s Maps app has increased reliance on its competitors, <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2007/06/23/5-surreal-google-street-view-images-interesting-errors-glitches-and-mistakes/">Google Maps isn&#8217;t entire free of glitches</a>, either.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-52526" alt="Apple Maps Glitch Art 6" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Apple-Maps-Glitch-Art-6.jpg" width="468" height="465" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-52525" alt="Apple Maps Glitch Art 7" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Apple-Maps-Glitch-Art-7.jpg" width="468" height="469" /></p>
<p>The mesmerizing beauty of glitches has led to an entire genre of art revolving around reproducing their eerie effects on purpose. <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2013/03/18/image-hacking-40-glitch-art-photos-paintings-videos/">Glitch art</a> creates digital or analog image errors by intentionally corrupting files, or mimicking their appearance in traditional artistic media like paintings and sculptures.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-47793" alt="Glitch Art main" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Glitch-Art-main.jpg" width="468" height="400" /></p>
<p>Surreal, dreamlike and often haunting, databending creates digital or analog image errors for artistic effect. An art form in which corrupted files are either created or mimicked in photographs, paintings, <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2013/03/14/not-a-glitch-cabinet-carved-with-disorienting-design/">sculptures</a>, video or even audio, databending finds beauty in technology gone awry. Ranging from colorful pillows to uncanny oil paintings inspired by security footage, here are 40+ works by 12 notable glitch artists.</p>
<h4>Oil Paintings by Andy Denzler</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-47800" alt="Glitch Art Andy Denzler 1" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Glitch-Art-Andy-Denzler-1.jpg" width="468" height="581" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-47799" alt="Glitch Art Andy Denzler 2" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Glitch-Art-Andy-Denzler-2.jpg" width="468" height="401" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-47808" alt="Glitch Art Regina Perra 3" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Glitch-Art-Regina-Perra-3.jpg" width="468" height="376" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-47807" alt="Glitch Art Regina Perra 2" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Glitch-Art-Regina-Perra-2.jpg" width="468" height="376" /></p>
<p>Looking like stills from aging home movies on VHS, <a href=" http://www.andydenzler.com/">Andy Denzler&#8217;s uncanny oil paintings</a> capture the feel of analog glitches so well you can almost hear the buzzing sound emanating from the television set when looking at them. Denzler fast-forwards or rewinds videotape and abruptly pauses it, and then paints the frozen frame, using smears and rough horizontal lines to achieve the effect.</p>
<h4>Security Footage Paintings by Regina Parra</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-47809" alt="Glitch Art Regina Perra 1" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Glitch-Art-Regina-Perra-1.jpg" width="468" height="580" /></p>
<p>Low-resolution security footage is translated into hazy watercolor paintings in <a href=" http://www.thecreatorsproject.com/blog/water-colored-security-footage-becomes-eery-glitch-art http://www.thecreatorsproject.com/blog/water-colored-security-footage-becomes-eery-glitch-art">a collaboration between Kon Trubkovich and Regina Parra.</a> With this series, Parra immortalizes moments on film which already have somewhat of an eerie feel, rendering them even more fascinating.</p>
<h4>Glitch Videos by Rosa Menkman</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-47805" alt="Glitch Art Rosa Menkman" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Glitch-Art-Rosa-Menkman.jpg" width="468" height="482" /></p>
<p><iframe loading="lazy" src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/12199201" height="375" width="468" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0"></iframe></p>
<p><a href="http://vimeo.com/12199201">The Collapse of PAL</a> from <a href="http://vimeo.com/r00s">Rosa Menkman</a> on <a href="http://vimeo.com">Vimeo</a>.</p>
<p><iframe loading="lazy" src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/56685866" height="281" width="468" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0"></iframe></p>
<p><a href="http://vimeo.com/56685866">02: One Billion Steps aka The longer you sit on a bus, the smaller the world becomes</a> from <a href="http://vimeo.com/r00s">Rosa Menkman</a> on <a href="http://vimeo.com">Vimeo</a>.</p>
<p>Dutch filmmaker and artist <a href=" http://rosa-menkman.blogspot.com/">Rosa Menkman</a> is an authority on the glitch art genre, producing events and written works as well as a &#8216;glitch manifesto&#8217; and experimental work of her own. In fact, she completed her master thesis on digital glitch in 2009. &#8220;Glitches are the uncanny, brutal structures that come to the surface during a break of the flow within a technology; they are the primal data-screams of the machine,&#8221; Menkman told DINCA in a 2010 interview. &#8220;Glitch art is a practice that studies and researches the vernacular of file formats in exploitative manners to deconstruct and create new, brutalist (audio)visual works. However, glitch artists often go beyond this formal approach; they realize that the glitch does not exists without human perception and therefore have a more inclusive approach to digital material.&#8221;</p>
<h4>Glitch Textiles by Philip Stearns</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-47802" alt="Glitch Art Textiles Stearns" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Glitch-Art-Textiles-Stearns.jpg" width="468" height="600" /></p>
<p>Artist<a href=" http://phillipstearns.wordpress.com/projects/glitch-textiles/"> Philip Stearns</a> describes his collection of woven and knit wall hangings and blankets &#8220;glitches in the cold, hard logic of digital circuits transformed into soft, warm textiles.&#8221; The designs were taken from short-circuited cameras and other &#8216;unorthodox&#8217; digital techniques.</p>
<h4>Distortion by Nicholas Ballesteros</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-47806" alt="Glitch Art Nicholas Ballesteros" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Glitch-Art-Nicholas-Ballesteros.jpg" width="467" height="612" /></p>
<p>“This technique of altering or appropriating images is not for a desired outcome other than showing the found material’s sheer ability to be bent,&#8221; says <a href=" http://cargocollective.com/nicholasballesteros/Distortion">artist Nicholas Ballesteros</a> of his &#8216;Distortion&#8217; series. Ballesteros uses a scanner and found images to produce these effects.</p>
<h4>Glitch Art Pillow Covers by Benjamin Berg</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-47797" alt="Glitch Art Pillow Covers Berg" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Glitch-Art-Pillow-Covers-Berg.jpg" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>Display colorful video glitches around your house with this series of <a href=" http://society6.com/stallio/pillows">throw pillows by artist Benjamin Berg</a>. Also producing work under the alias stAllio, Berg discovered glitching by running the contents of his hard drive through music software. &#8220;Glitch art is a dance on the edge of a failing system,&#8221;<a href=" http://www.wired.co.uk/magazine/archive/2011/02/play/please-do-not-adjust-your-magazine"> he says.</a></p>
<h4>Analog Glitches by Rob Sheridan</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-47796" alt="Glitch Art Rob Sheridan" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Glitch-Art-Rob-Sheridan.jpg" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>Artist <a href=" http://rob-sheridan.com/analog/one.html">Rob Sheridan created a series of visuals</a> for the band How to Destroy Angels&#8217; Welcome Oblivion and An omen EP, saying &#8220;these images were created by disrupting signals through analog tape and display equipment, not with Photoshop effects.&#8221;</p>

<p>No, there&#8217;s nothing wrong with your screen &#8211; this intricate wooden cabinet was actually carved to resemble an image error. The <a href="http://mocovote.com/good-vibrations-storage-unit-by-ferruccio-laviani/">&#8216;Good Vibrations&#8217; storage uni</a>t by designer <a href="http://www.laviani.com/">Ferruccio Laviani</a> combines traditional Oriental craftsmanship and design with the visual effects of a digital or analog glitch.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-47676" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Glitch-Cabinet-1.jpg" alt="Glitch Cabinet 1" width="468" height="397" /></p>
<p>Designed for the 2013 Furniture Exhibition in collaboration with Italian furniture company Fratelli Boffi, the wooden cabinet features two distorted areas where conventional carvings seem to have been stretched.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-47675" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Glitch-Cabinet-3.jpg" alt="Glitch Cabinet 3" width="468" height="374" /></p>
<p>Unfortunately, the only image of the cabinet made available to the public shows it from the front, so we can&#8217;t get a look at how the distortions appear from three-quarter and side angles.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-47672" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Glitch-Cabinet-5.jpg" alt="Glitch Cabinet 5" width="468" height="332" /></p>
<p>Glitch art plays on the psychological effects that come with looking at these images, whether they were created accidentally or intentionally, inviting us to take a deeper look at technological mistakes. Also referred to as &#8216;databending&#8217;, glitch art can be strangely compelling.</p>
