<p>Not every office environment can be a multi-billion-dollar geodesic conservatory filled with tens of thousands of tropical plants, but there are lots of different ways to make boring workspaces more livable with the power of vegetation. These office interiors go way beyond bringing in a few houseplants to improve the air quality, incorporating planters into sculptural desks and spiral staircases, offering park-like grassy hills to sit on or covering virtually every surface with something green.</p>
<h4>The Spheres: Amazon’s New Geodesic Seattle Headquarters</h4>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-111484" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/amazon-spheres-644x483.jpeg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-111483" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/amazon-spheres-2-644x450.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="450" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-111482" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/amazon-spheres-3-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-111481" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/amazon-spheres-4-644x644.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="644" /></p>
<p>Say what you will about Amazon (and its effect on Seattle), but it’s hard to argue that the new addition to its headquarters by <a href="http://www.nbbj.com/news/2017/1/3/seattle-times-explores-new-amazon-spheres/">NBBJ</a> is one of the most lush, verdant office environments ever created. Not only do the geodesic structures contain more than 40,000 plants representing 400 species from around the world, including an 18-ton ficus, a 40-foot fern and a huge glass tank full of Amazonian aquatic plants, it offers a highly unusual work environment. Five levels of workspaces include offices that are open to views of the Sphere interiors, a deck full of recliners and a treehouse meeting space with a suspended bridge.</p>
<h4>Living Spiral Staircase at a London Office Building by Paul Cocksedge</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-111512" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/paul-cocksedge-staircase.jpg" alt="" width="537" height="462" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-111511" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/paul-cocksedge-staircase-2-644x583.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="583" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-111510" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/paul-cocksedge-staircase-3.jpg" alt="" width="537" height="412" /></p>
<p>The spiral staircase at the center of the Ampersand office building in London is basically a four-story planter. Designed by <a href="http://www.paulcocksedgestudio.com/">Paul Cocksedge</a>, the structure transforms what previously felt like a cold and impersonal space. Each of the three circular wooden landings offer bench seating so employees can spend time among the greenery.</p>
<h4>Park-Like Office for a Tourism Company by Studio Haps &amp; 07Beach</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-111509" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/parklike-office-1-644x966.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="966" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-111508" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/parklike-office-2-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-111507" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/parklike-office-3-644x966.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="966" /></p>
<p>While the occupants of standard office buildings daydream about breaking free of their poorly lit, improperly ventilated cages, employees of this Vietnamese tourist company are basically already working in a park. The interiors of these Ho Chi Minh offices are a collaboration between <a href="https://www.facebook.com/STU.HAPP/">Studio Haps</a> and <a href="https://zero7beach.blogspot.jp/">07beach</a>, aiming to promote the well-being and stimulate the creativity of its staff.</p>
<h4>Garden in a Former Steam Factory by Jvantspijker</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-111506" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/steam-factory-rotterdam-644x520.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="520" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-111505" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/steam-factory-rotterdam-2-644x450.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="450" /></p>
<p>Not everyone has the ability to go big when it comes to livening up their workplaces, but this project by architecture studio <a href="http://www.jvantspijker.com/">Jvantspijker</a> at its own renovated offices show off the impact a smaller project can make. A new volume within the former steam factory offers a glazed meeting space on the first level and an indoor garden on the top, elevated above the workspaces and enjoying views of the sky through the space’s large windows.</p>
<h4>Panoramic Garden Boardroom in Slovenia by Sadar + Vuga</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-111504" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/sadar-vuga-garden-644x482.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="482" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-111503" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/sadar-vuga-garden-2-644x482.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="482" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-111502" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/sadar-vuga-garden-3-644x324.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="324" /></p>
<p>The VIP boardroom in Ljubljana where the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia meet is full of swooping white lines carrying vines and other greenery throughout the space.<a href="http://www.sadarvuga.com/"> Sadar + Vuga</a> created an interior garden that stays green year-round, supported by a steel ribbon that undulates around the room, complemented by glazed walls and ceilings.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-101965 size-full" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/off-grid-urban-main.jpg" alt="off grid urban main" width="1024" height="415" /></p>
<p>Off-grid housing is almost always relegated to remote areas due to strict urban building codes and access to affordable land, but sometimes self-contained structures pop up in parks, on rooftops and in canals anyway &#8211; or the owners of more conventional city dwellings simply cut the cord. There are already a lot of different ways to go off-grid in the city, most explored by necessity due to poverty, others seeking a more sustainable way of life without giving up community and convenience. From rooftop structures and mobile housing to entirely new self-powered city blocks, these solutions work within cities that already exist rather than envisioning expensive futuristic eco-cities from the ground up.</p>
<h4>The Mobiators</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-101983" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/mobiators-644x428.jpg" alt="mobiators" width="644" height="428" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-101982" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/mobiators-2.jpg" alt="mobiators 2" width="640" height="425" /></p>
<p>Somewhere between a DIY cabin, a tent and a mobile home, this strange structure by <a href="https://www.facebook.com/TheMobiationProject/">The Mobiation Project</a> travels through Amsterdam, setting up in locations all over the city as a statement about the increasingly broken global economy and damage to the environment. Built by an artist/architect and a carpenter/designer, The Mobi-01 acts as an interactive, inhabitable, ‘open-house’ example of an off-grid structure that can set up virtually anywhere.</p>
<h4>Off-Grid Rooftop Penthouse in Canada</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-101981" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/off-grid-rooftop-penthouse-canada-644x428.jpg" alt="off grid rooftop penthouse canada" width="644" height="428" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-101980" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/off-grid-rooftop-penthouse-canada-2-644x711.jpg" alt="off grid rooftop penthouse canada 2" width="644" height="711" /></p>
<p>Reclaiming the rooftop space atop urban structures isn’t a new idea, but it’s rare to see them disconnected from the power grid, like this former mechanical room on a 19-floor office building in Edmonton, Canada. Architect Vivian Manasc saw potential in the structure when doing a technical evaluation of the building, and <a href="https://www.dwell.com/article/eco-friendly-penthouse-in-canada-d33badd2">ultimately transformed it into a home for herself.</a> The home horseshoes around an existing elevator core, which warms the space passively, and gets its power from solar panels.</p>
<h4>Free Off Grid Camping on a NYC Rooftop</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-101956" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/bivuoac-urban-camping-644x378.jpg" alt="bivuoac urban camping" width="644" height="378" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-101955" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/bivuoac-urban-camping-2-644x429.jpg" alt="bivuoac urban camping 2" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-101954" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/bivouac-off-grid-new-york-cit-644x429.jpg" alt="bivouac off grid new york cit" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><a href="https://bivouacny.squarespace.com">Bivouac</a> is a pop-up campsite rotating to different rooftop spots around New York City, consisting of little more than six waterproof canvas tents with wooden frames and wool floor mats, a kitchen area with a table, and a small library. There’s no internet, electricity or showers, and you can’t have a campfire, but at least there’s access to a toilet within the building. It’s entirely free, and an interesting concept, though one wonders what this project says about accessing urban spaces when you’re well-off just for fun versus the tent cities created by homeless people who have nowhere else to go.</p>
<h4>Off-Grid Urban Block for Dallas, Texas</h4>

<p>What if entire city blocks could be designed to power themselves, built in areas that were previously disused, like former industrial properties or rail yards? Winner of the Re:Vision Dallas competition,<a href="http://www.archdaily.com/24813/forwarding-dallas-atelier-data-moov"> ‘Forwarding Dallas’</a> envisions a complex of living spaces inspired by rolling hills, with vegetation-covered roofs, solar panels, wind turbines, and passive solar louvers covering the building’s glass facades to regulate heat. The block also has its own rooftop water catchment system, a greenhouse, a swimming pool and other communal spaces. The 40,000-square-meter complex could sustainably house 854 people within the space of a typical city block.</p>

<p>We’ve seen lots of dazzling concepts by Belgian architect Vincent Callebaut, most of which seem far too fanciful to ever actually materialize, but his twisting high-rise tower in Taipei is <a href="http://www.designboom.com/architecture/vincent-callebaut-twisting-carbon-absorbing-tower-taipei-tao-zhu-yin-yuan-taiwan-11-25-2016/">finally taking shape in three dimensions</a>. ‘Tao Zhu Yin Yuan’ is about halfway complete, pivoting on a central axis for a layout that enables outdoor space brimming with greenery on every floor. Scheduled for completion in September 2017, the residential tower will support 23,000 trees absorbing up to 130 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98880" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/callebaut-concept-644x487.jpg" alt="callebaut-concept" width="644" height="487" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98878" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/callebaut-taipei-2-644x429.jpg" alt="callebaut-taipei-2" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>The tower is conceived as a ‘inhabited tree,’ set upon a circular footprint with towers extending from the core in a double helix shape. From the north or south, it looks like a pyramid, while east and west views give onlookers a fuller idea of the building’s scale. It will contain 40 luxury apartments and additional facilities, and is set to meet LEED gold status as well as diamond-level Low Carbon Building Alliance certification.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98874" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/callebaut-taipei-6-644x455.jpg" alt="callebaut-taipei-6" width="644" height="455" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98875" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/callebaut-taipei-5-644x554.jpg" alt="callebaut-taipei-5" width="644" height="554" /></p>
<p>Callebaut is known for proposals that emphasize sustainability, self-sufficiency, the inclusion of vegetation and eye-popping shapes. Examples include his <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2009/05/27/unbuilt-buildings-12-awesome-future-architectural-designs/">dragonfly-wing-shaped urban farm</a>, the <a href="http://webecoist.momtastic.com/2009/04/27/12-fantastic-floating-cities-and-artificial-islands/?utm_source=Mozilla%2F5.0+%28Macintosh%3B+Intel+Mac+OS+X+10_15_7%29+AppleWebKit%2F605.1.15+%28KHTML%2C+like+Gecko%29+Version%2F17.4+Safari%2F605.1.15+%28Applebot%2F0.1%3B+%2Bhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.apple.com%2Fgo%2Fapplebot%29&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=feed-main-tags-green-buildings&utm_content=unknown&utm_term=feed-link" target="_blank">Lilypad floating city concept</a>, the <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2015/12/09/sci-fi-skyscrapers-15-futuristic-visions-for-vertical-cities/3/">‘Asian Cairns’ residential towers</a> and<a href="https://weburbanist.com/2015/01/27/recycled-skylines-8-green-urban-tower-typologies-for-2050/"> a series of futuristic ‘smart towers’ </a>aiming to reduce pollution and create renewable energy while integrating into existing built environments.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98877" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/callebaut-taipei-3-644x483.jpg" alt="callebaut-taipei-3" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>Most of these concepts either appear too wild and expensive to developers and investors to inspire confidence for real-world success, or rely on theoretical technology that hasn’t been fully developed or proven. But nobody can accuse Callebaut of limiting his own creativity in the way he envisions the future of architecture, in a world where the choices we make for our cities directly impact our ability to withstand the consequences of climate change.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98876" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/callebaut-taipei-4-644x438.jpg" alt="callebaut-taipei-4" width="644" height="438" /></p>
<p>“In 2050, we will be 9 billion of human beings on our blue planet and 80% of the world population will live in megacities,” says Callebaut. “It’s time to invent new eco-responsible lifestyles and to repatriate the nature in our city in order to increase the quality of our life with respect of our environment.”</p>

<p><!--wsa:gooold-->Steel shipping containers are the temporary homes of countless consumer items being transported all around the world. Items are packed into the cargo containers in their country of origin, then shipped to wherever they&#8217;re destined to be sold. Once they&#8217;re emptied at the appropriate port, many of these cargo containers simply sit around empty or get melted down for re-use. But recently, they&#8217;ve found new lives as homes and other types of buildings. Perhaps the two most appealing aspects of building with shipping containers are the affordability and the green construction factor: shipping container homes are far less expensive than new-material traditional homes, and reusing them rather than melting them down significantly reduces the carbon footprint of the steel containers.<br />

<img decoding="async" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/shipping-containers.jpg" /></p>
<p>But how does it feel to live in a shipping container? Most people who have built this type of home say that they&#8217;re sturdy and modern, and when several containers are connected the building can be just about any size, from a single-container loft to a multi-container family home. Some residents of shipping container homes and offices choose to display the origins of their buildings by leaving the facades alone. Others disguise the shipping containers by applying exteriors that make the recycled buildings look just like any other. Whether they&#8217;re rough around the edges or covered in cutting-edge design, shipping container homes are definitely going places. <em><strong>Click the thumbnails below for more images of and information on these amazing designs:</strong></em></p>

<p><!--wsa:gooold-->Railroad cars are big, heavy, and cumbersome. They&#8217;re notoriously hard to move into new locations off of their tracks, and because of their odd shape most people wouldn&#8217;t think of using them for anything else anyway. But in the spirit of recycling, green construction and <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2008/05/26/cargo-container-homes-and-offices/">shipping container homes</a>, some enterprising people are recycling old train cars into <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2008/06/01/more-cargo-container-homes-and-offices/">homes, offices</a> and even hotels.</p>
<p><span id="more-14612"></span><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-14613" title="recycled train car homes" alt="recycled train car homes" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/recycled-train-car-homes.jpg" width="468" height="331" /></p>
<h6>(images via: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/70127529@N00/2437033721">Jag9889</a>, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/48036717@N00/173074445/">The Manimal</a>, <a href="http://www.thegreenestdollar.com/2009/02/homes-made-from-old-cabooses/">The Greenest Dollar</a>, and <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/ramonacordova/2048603971/">Ramon</a>)</h6>
<p>With the mortgage industry in trouble and more people making the shift toward green housing, reusing train cars as homes is a logical step. Like <a href="http://dornob.com/diy-used-cargo-homes-shipping-container-house-plans/">shipping containers</a>, it&#8217;s relatively easy to do the conversion yourself, provided you have the resources to get the car to its new location. Cabooses seem to be the most popular choice for train car homes, but there are plenty of dining and sleeping cars being converted as well. If you&#8217;re able to shell out <a href="http://www.thegreenestdollar.com/2009/02/homes-made-from-old-cabooses/">between $8000 and $45,000</a> for an old car, another several thousand to transport the car and put it into place on your property, and whatever it takes in material and labor to transform it, you can have a home for much less than a conventional house would cost. And best of all, it will be completely unique and as green as you want it to be.</p>

<p>This <a href="http://www.kgw.com/business/stories/kgw_070808_lifestyle_portland_railcar_home.36acd031.html">converted rail car home</a> in Portland, Oregon, is a great example of how beautiful a home a converted railroad car can make. The outside may look plain, but on the inside it&#8217;s surprisingly luxurious. The home encompasses an impressive 807 square feet and features 10-foot-high ceilings, DSL, thoroughly new everything, a full electric kitchen, and an incinerator toilet. The siding it&#8217;s currently situation on is rented to the current owner for $150 a month, and since it&#8217;s not technically real estate there are no property taxes. The home is <a href="http://www.laurieholland.com/railcar.html">currently for sale</a>, so if you want the train car home experience without renovating one yourself, now&#8217;s your chance.</p>

<p>If you&#8217;ve ever passed by the northern edge of Richardson Bay in Sausalito, California, chances are you&#8217;ve seen some pretty unusual houseboats moored there. One of the most unique is this one, made from <a href="http://www.hgtv.com/home-improvement/railroad-houseboat/index.html">an old railroad car</a>. The car was once known as #41 on the San Francisco and Northern Pacific Railway in 1889. After it was retired in 1936, it was made into a land-based duplex and stayed put until 1979. At that time it was purchased to be made into this amazing houseboat. The home contains many of the original rail car bits, including the dining seats and some of the interior wood.</p>

<h6>(images via: <a href="http://london-underground.blogspot.com/2008/03/visiting-nabokovs-tube-carriage-offices.html">London Underground</a> and <a href="http://www.villageunderground.co.uk/">Village Underground</a>)</h6>
<p>High above the London streets in Shoreditch, a few disused Tube carriages sit proudly, adorned with beautiful graffiti and shining with new life. They&#8217;re part of <a href="http://www.villageunderground.co.uk/">Village Underground</a>, a collection of office and studio spaces that encompass the carriages above as well as a massive Victorian warehouse below. A wide variety of occupants take up the spaces, making a truly diverse and unique urban community encompassing some very distinctive recycled building elements.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-14621" title="recycled train car bridge" alt="recycled train car bridge" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/recycled-train-car-bridge.jpg" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<h6>(image via: <a href="http://vertes-et-mures.blogspot.com/2008/04/rcup-insolite-un-wagon-en-pont.html">Anne Vauclare</a>)</h6>
<p>Not all repurposed train cars are used as dwellings or offices. Sometimes, it&#8217;s simply a matter of using the available material to solve the problem at hand. Though it&#8217;s not clear exactly where this train car bridge is or even how it got there &#8211; miles away from a highway or railroad network &#8211; it&#8217;s an amusing sight.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-14617" title="deptford project repurposed rail car cafe" alt="deptford project repurposed rail car cafe" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/deptford-project-repurposed-rail-car-cafe.jpg" width="468" height="445" /></p>
<h6>(images via: <a href="http://www.thedeptfordproject.com/">The Deptford Project</a>)</h6>
<p>In mid-2008, a remarkable project came together in Deptford, South London: a 1960s rail car was transported to the high street to become part of an urban reclamation arts project. The car was stripped and repurposed by designer <a href="http://www.studiomyerscough.com/">Morag Myerscough</a>, then turned into a café. The <a href="http://www.thedeptfordproject.com/">Deptford Project</a> Café is now decorated with beautiful graffiti advertising its existence, and inside you can get a cup of sustainably-harvested coffee or a plate of locally produced treats.</p>

<h6>(images via: <a href="http://redcaboosegetaway.com/">Redcaboose Getaway B&amp;B</a>)</h6>
<p>Some enterprising individuals put the homey feel of converted rail cars to good use as bed and breakfast rooms. The <a href="http://redcaboosegetaway.com/">Redcaboose Getaway</a> on Washington&#8217;s Olympic Peninsula manages to look both charming and exciting. If you ever wanted to be a train conductor as a kid, this is the place to live out that dream&#8230;sort of. The B&amp;B features several cabooses, each of which is a separate guest chamber. There&#8217;s also a restored art deco dining car where the staff chef prepares breakfast each morning. The Olympic Peninsula is one of the must-see areas of the US, and this seems like an amazing place to call a temporary home while exploring the area.</p>

<p>The <a href="http://www.controversy.nl/">Controversy B&amp;B</a> in Hoogwoud, Netherlands takes full advantage of the offbeat nature of the discarded train on its grounds. The compartment is 21 meters long and contains some truly wacky features: the sink basin in the bathroom is an old tire, the bed is a boat, and the jacuzzi tub is in the shape of a colorful sombrero. And if trains aren&#8217;t your thing, the transportation-themed property also features trams and a UFO.</p>

<h6>(images via: <a href="http://www.fairbanksalaskabedandbreakfast.com/">Aurora Express B&amp;B</a>)</h6>
<p>Fairbanks, Alaska boasts its own quirky railroad car bed and breakfast. The <a href="http://www.fairbanksalaskabedandbreakfast.com/">Aurora Express B&amp;B</a> features four historic railroad cars as sleeping chambers and one dining car. The cars were purchased from the Denali State Park Hotel for $1 each, with the agreement that the Wilson family would pay to transport them to their property. Today, the cars sit on 700 feet of private railroad track overlooking Fairbanks and the Tanana Valley.</p>

<h6>(images via: <a href="http://englishrussia.com/?p=2248">English Russia</a>)</h6>
<p>Perhaps the most bizarre train reuse is the Russian trend of <a href="http://dornob.com/religious-conversions-old-train-cars-turned-into-churches/">converting old train cars</a> into Orthodox Christian churches. They range from the simple repurposing to the elaborate redesign, complete with adding an entirely new facade. The end result is an unusual but inspirational presentation, showing us that these industrial giants don&#8217;t need to be discarded when their working lives are over; they simply need someone who cares enough to give them new life.</p>
