    <p><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-107872" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/shoal-tent-644x385.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p>&#8220;The world is your waterbed&#8221; according to <a href="https://smithfly.myshopify.com/">SmithFly</a>, the creators of the floating Shoal Tent, an inflatable sleeping craft that lets you drift off while drifting out on the water.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-107868" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/raft-tent-644x430.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p>The base is inflatable as is the tent structure, obviating the need for poles. Waterproof and wind resistant, it features a thick drop-stitched floor that serves as a robust but comfortable air mattress.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-107871" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/floating-tent-644x385.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p>The tent is about eight by eight feet along the outside, and a person within can stand up without hitting the top.The top attaches easily but also detaches quickly in case of emergency. Each unit comes with a storage bag, foot pump and patch kit in case those shoals turn out to be rocky.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-107869" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/tent-on-water-644x430.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p>Of course, you have to be a bit adventurous to try this out on the open water, but SmithFly suggests sticking to “your favorite farm pond, salt water flat, spring creek, or eddie on your favorite river.” They are scheduled to cost around $1500 and are available for pre-sale.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-107870" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/tent-to-go-644x385.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p>More from its maker: &#8220;SmithFly designs and builds modular gear for sportsmen who want to be able to change and reconfigure their gear to suit various conditions and situations. Our goal is to build as much as possible in the USA.Our unique small batch mentality allows us great flexibility to test and maintain the highest standards of quality possible..&#8221;</p>

<p>Designed by <a href="https://igorsirotov.com/en/">Igor Sirotov</a>, the PS1 House is a private residence to be built onto a series of stone lips that span from the lake&#8217;s surface below to access points above.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-94786" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/lake-stone-buildings-644x322.jpg" alt="lake stone buildings" width="644" height="322" /></p>

<p>Weathered steel and concrete blend the buildings into the landscape while physically linking them via steps and railings as well.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-94781" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/russian-interior-spaces-644x644.jpg" alt="russian interior spaces" width="644" height="644" /></p>
<p>The idea was driven in part by a desire to minimize the building&#8217;s footprint and need to alter the natural landscape, taking advantage of existing natural formations.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-94780" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/russian-fireplace-modernist-brutalist-644x644.jpg" alt="russian fireplace modernist brutalist" width="644" height="644" /></p>
<p>The design borrows from Modernist and Brutalist camps, austere but materially rich with aging in mind.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-94785" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/stone-building-segments-644x322.jpg" alt="stone building segments" width="644" height="322" /></p>
<p>Steel frames and stone floors match the color and pattern palettes of surrounding site elements, providing semi-permeable shelters for bedrooms, kitchens and dining spaces at intervals between the top and bottom.</p>

<p>Combining the cheap convenience of a hostel with the outdoor access of a tent, this wheeled micro-dwelling can be carted behind a bicycle then lowered into the water for a night of floating fun.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85974" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/wheeled-bike-nomadic-468x280.jpg" alt="wheeled bike nomadic" width="468" height="280" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85973" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/bike-bed-trail-468x280.jpg" alt="bike bed trail" width="468" height="280" /></p>
<p>Created by Royal College of Art (RCA) graduate <a href="http://www.rca.ac.uk/students/daniel-durnin/" target="_blank">Daniel Durnin</a>, the shelter features a watertight bottom, canvass walls and operable wood-framed fenestration for viewing and circulation.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85977" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/water-bed-on-wheels-468x280.jpg" alt="water bed on wheels" width="468" height="280" /></p>

<p>The tent-on-the-water approach renders urban lakes, rivers and streams suddenly more accessible, creating alternative campgrounds that take up no space on land. It is designed with city&#8217;s like Durnin&#8217;s own (London) in mind, places where waterways are more prevalent than unused grounds.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-85975" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/water-tent-floating-468x280.jpg" alt="water tent floating" width="468" height="280" /></p>

<p>&#8220;I hope that the work will reawaken our connection with nature using the waterways as a catalyst and restore balance to the more networked living space that we now inhabit, not just in London but across the globe,&#8221; says Durnin.</p>

<p>Combining centralized shared spaces like a conventional hotel and the mobility of a catamaran, this award-winning hybrid combines elements of community and seclusion on the water.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81614" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/floating-hotel-design-468x312.jpg" alt="floating hotel design" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>Each individual unit comes with a standard living room, kitchen, bathroom and sleeping loft as well as deck space and a driving area for taking your space around a lake or sea. Meanwhile, the lobby structure bridges the gap between land and water and provides reception, restaurant, event and cafe spaces. Design themes also create a connection between the modules and the whole, including wood slats and white surfaces.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81610" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/floating-hotel-room-interior-468x312.jpg" alt="floating hotel room interior" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81608" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/floating-hotel-living-deck-468x312.jpg" alt="floating hotel living deck" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>The rear-facing deck provides space for sunbathing and fishing, while also framing uninterrupted views of nature. Side and front windows can be closed off for privacy, or opened when venturing out on the open water with no nosy neighbors around to sneak peaks inside.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-large wp-image-81609" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/floating-hotel-privacy-screens-468x312.jpg" alt="" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81612" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/floating-hotel-open-water-468x312.jpg" alt="floating hotel open water" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>Designed by <a href="http://saltandwater.rs/floating-hotel-with-catamaran-apartments/">Salt &amp; Water</a>, the approach won a 2015 Millennium Yacht Design Awards for innovatively integrating architectural and nautical systems to create a unique experience for guests. Like the <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2013/05/30/botel-floating-hotel-with-modular-detachable-room-boats/">Botel</a>, this remains a conceptual design for now, but clearly something is in the water since firms keep coming back to this novel combination of ideas.</p>

<p>Like a corroded time capsule, this submerged village has risen from the depths after being flooded decades ago when the local lake broke its banks and left Epecuen under dozens of feet of water. In 1985, a rare weather pattern broke a nearby dam first, then the dike protecting the town, quickly making most of it uninhabitable. Today, long-term changes in the regional climate have brought down the overall level of the lake, resurfacing the town.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75641" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/sunken-village-resurfaced-underwater-468x351.jpg" alt="sunken village resurfaced underwater" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://player.vimeo.com/video/88706281' allowfullscreen frameborder='0'></iframe></div></p>
<p>Giving a tour of his devastated hometown, the man in the award-winning video above , Pablo Novak, claims his father predicted the return of water to the areas of land on which people were building back in the 1980s &#8211; at its peak, the place drew in over 25,000 tourists a year. Today, Pablo is the only remaining resident, slowly exploring the remnants now revealed as waters around the lake have lowered.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75706" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/villa-epecun-from-above-468x342.jpg" alt="villa epecun from above" width="468" height="342" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75638" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/underwater-village-before-after-468x264.jpg" alt="underwater village before after" width="468" height="264" /></p>
<p>Located near Buenos Aires, it is hard to imagine that this place &#8211; with a permanent population of 5,000  at one point &#8211; was once a busy destination from tourists around the country and even the world, renowned for its high-salinity lake in which people came to bathe. This salt content is largely responsible for the high levels of damage done to the town&#8217;s buildings and infrastructure during its years underwater.</p>

<p>First, the fields began to flood, driving our narrator&#8217;s cows, horses, pigs sheep and goats back further onto land and forcing Pablo to buy a family home in a neighboring village. Now 85 years old, he always assumed the town would be rebuilt, but that has never come to pass.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75642" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/sunken-town-ruins-468x351.jpg" alt="sunken town ruins" width="468" height="351" /></p>

<p>Since the waters have receded, Pablo now tries to appreciate the solitude left in its wake and gives tours to those who come these days not to soak but to see the once-sunken village now risen once again to the surface. <em>Images by <a title="" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/hamster_rave/5882203948/in/photolist-4prMDJ-4pnKsX-9XMQis-58PqD2-eDj26z-eDj2yP-9vnCvr-58YJ4j-71xuUz-p71dLx-71Bv7o-4pnK2k-oPKT6S-p7f416-p7gWfD-oPLmpQ-oPKWm1-oPKFYc-oPLYtL-oPKC36-p7eV4S-oPKthb-p7h2PV-p5eFo1-p7fcQk-oPMghT-p7gKC6-oPKWeK-oPL4sd-oPM2fN-p7dG7S-p7fGue-oPMbe9-oPL79f-oPL5jx-oPLcF6-p7eMZG-p7eMn9-oPLMwK-p6Z32D-oPMiZ7-p5dg2Y-oPLruw-p5dBYC-p7gyqB-oPLaJG-oPLNNw-p7ddoA-p7g7dr-p7gzpF">Sam Verhaert</a>, <a title="" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/jontyjago/14980462299/in/photolist-oPLMwK-p6Z32D-oPMiZ7-p5dg2Y-oPLruw-p5dBYC-p7gyqB-oPLaJG-oPLNNw-p7ddoA-p7g7dr-p7gzpF-oPKZa5-p7eCGy-p7gYe8-oPLRwP-p6Z73K-p6Zjs4-p6YRTn-oPMsaL-p7dL7q-oPLZ9y-oPMpf6-p5dxa9-oPKojW-p7g3oH-oPMkWx-oPLsE4-p7gxPM-p6ZmnB-oPLVJY-oPL3r6-oPM9JA-p5djCL-oPKsEQ-p6ZPDR-oPLNYc-oPLsZf-p7f4E2-oPKTx5-p7g2zD-oPLLKH-oPL4Uh-oPLuP7-p7fJGk-p6Z85K-p6Z47e-oPMtmT-p7fBDH-p7fuwM">Jonathan Evans</a> and <a title="" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26160403@N02/5124495593">Pablo Gonzales</a> via <a href="http://inhabitat.com/take-a-virtual-tour-of-an-argentinian-ghost-town-with-its-last-remaining-resident/">Inhabitat</a>.</em></p>
