<p>These 15 <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2015/09/20/sweet-transit-japans-cute-fruit-shaped-bus-stops/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">bus shelters</a> from <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2018/03/25/beetle-mania-10-groovy-volkswagen-bug-art-cars/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Germany</a> express a distinctive design aesthetic that reflects the tension between stolid practicality and startling creativity.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-114146" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/german-bus-shelters-1b-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>These two bus shelters face each other from opposite sides of the main road running through Durrnhof, Bavaria.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-114147" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/german-bus-shelters-1c-644x430.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p>Captured by Flickr member <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/pilot_michael/sets/72157620680957344">pilot_micha</a> in June of 2009, the bus shelters were constructed with stereotypical teutonic utility in mind. At some later date, however, their interior walls were whimsically painted, likely by local schoolchildren as an urban beautification project.</p>
<h4>XX Marks the Stop</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-114150" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/german-bus-shelters-2a-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>The most interesting bus shelter in the world? Well, maybe in Hanover, the capital city of Lower Saxony and a town famed for its annual commercial fairs. The half-million-strong city also hosted Expo 2000, one of the last and largest world fairs. The bus shelter above is situated in the Königsworther Platz and was photographed by Flickr member <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/20792787@N00/4247926427/">jaime.silva</a> in June of 2009.</p>
<h4>Hull or High Water</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-114152" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/german-bus-shelters-3a-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>Viewed from both sides, this curiously boat-shaped bus shelter can be found in Hanover&#8217;s Rathaus/Friederichswall district. Flickr member <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/20792787@N00/4248690124/">jaime.silva</a> snapped the scene in August of 2009.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-114153" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/german-bus-shelters-3b-644x430.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p><em>&#8220;In 1994,&#8221;</em> according to Flickr member <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/tim_boric/27614291720/">Tim Boric</a>, &#8220;<i id="yui_3_16_0_1_1527351779778_1856">nine tram and bus stops in Hannover were redesigned in totally different ways by international artists,</i>&#8221; including this one credited to Italian designer Massimo Iosa Ghini. We&#8217;d &#8220;keel&#8221; to have one of these kool kreative bus stops in our neighborhood!</p>
<h4>Das Otto</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-114154" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/german-bus-shelters-4a-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>Students at the regional school in Bad Kleinen, near Hamburg, enjoy waiting for their ride home at this shamelessly Simpsons-esque bus shelter. Neither faux-Otto nor his 2D passengers seem particularly pleased&#8230; Matt Groening might sport a similar grimace should he ever see this. Kudos to Flickr member <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/patrickscholl/9453907904/in/album-72157634892957702/">Patrick</a>, who captured the less-than-flattering homage in July of 2013.</p>
<h4>Smile You Wait</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-114155" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/german-bus-shelters-5a-644x422.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="422" /></p>
<p>This charming little bus shelter perfectly complements the peaceful, pastoral landscape of the Agricultural Region south of Hamburg. The same can be said for the anonymous work of cheerful, colorful graffiti art on the shelter&#8217;s inside back wall. Flickr member Csaba Lehel (<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/csaba-lehel/40819325524/">infodog</a>) captured the rainy day scene in mid-April of 2018.</p>

<p>Composed of dozens of school buses surrounded with concrete, there may not be room for two of every Earthly animal in this &#8220;Ark Two&#8221; but there is space for around 500 humans (kids and adults) to cohabitate through a moderate apocalypse.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-109432" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/bus-building-644x293.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="293" /></p>
<p>Located in Horning&#8217;s Mills (in case you need to get there in an emergency) on the edge of Toronto, Canada, this remarkable shelter features 10,000 feet of subterranean space. The resulting mega-structure is the largest known private fallout shelter on the North American continent.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-109431" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/complex-map-644x385.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p>Bruce and Jean Beach, a local couple, live on adjacent land and built their underground bunker to last, encasing a series of interconnected buses in solid concrete. As it turns out: a derelict bus is cheap, costing just a few hundred dollars, but its reinforced steel frame makes it a strong candidate to be used for a mold. The buses are carefully aligned to create sequential spaces serving different key functions.</p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/zmOLaQYaQ1k?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>And it wasn&#8217;t just built for the pair of them: it is equipped with a well and plumbing, kitchen and laundry areas, even spaces dedicated for doctors and daycare centers (complete with emergency and surgery rooms). The couple constructed the place decades ago, not so much as a space for immediate survival but an outpost from which the world could be built in a post-nuclear age.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-109429" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/in-bus-view-644x385.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-109428" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/bus-view-two-644x385.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-109427" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/bus-view-three-644x385.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p>The complex doesn&#8217;t have a permit, which has landed its builders in court on more than one occasion, but officials seem largely content to let them be at this point. Meanwhile, Cold War or not, the dedicated couple (now well into their 80s) continue to build up supplies and prepare the space for uncertain futures. It may yet pay off.</p>

<p>Whether your furry friends are canine or feline, this pair of posh pet architecture companies have your Modernist domesticated animal needs (quite literally) covered.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-86089" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/modernist-cat-furniture-468x311.jpg" alt="modernist cat furniture" width="468" height="311" /></p>
<p>And for those domiciles home to both cats and dogs that do not share space, fear not: the Puphaus is made for the outdoor dog and Meyou created for the indoors cat.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-86090" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/designer-dog-living-468x264.jpg" alt="designer dog living" width="468" height="264" /></p>
<p>First, the <a href="http://www.pyramddesignco.com/puphaus/">Puphaus</a> borrows domestic architectural design elements but employs a tools-free approach for easy assembly, creating a backyard home for your pup that could be cooler than your own house.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-86092" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/designer-dog-house-468x273.jpg" alt="designer dog house" width="468" height="273" /></p>
<p>&#8220;Sporting backgrounds in graphic and industrial design, dog-loving founders Roy Fleeman and Zach Griggs wanted to design &amp; build something unique for man&#8217;s best friend: the Puphaus. Time to ditch the plastic igloos and give our pups some stylish new digs.&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-86087" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/modernist-cat-ball-468x310.jpg" alt="modernist cat ball" width="468" height="310" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-86088" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/modernist-desktop-cat-468x299.jpg" alt="modernist desktop cat" width="468" height="299" /></p>
<p>The <a href="http://meyou-paris.com/">Meyou</a> line of cat furniture by Parisian designer Aude Sanchez approaches the problem as a question of interior design, aiming to create habitats that will not just look good next to but also become part of your decorative scheme.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-86086" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/modernist-cat-bed-468x339.jpg" alt="modernist cat bed" width="468" height="339" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-86083" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/modernist-cat-observer-468x329.jpg" alt="modernist cat observer" width="468" height="329" /></p>
<p>The resulting cat cocoons are made for curious and playful kitties to use for shelter, napping, hiding or even sharpening their claws.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-86084" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/modernist-kitty-stool-468x636.jpg" alt="modernist kitty stool" width="468" height="636" /></p>
<p>The Ball, The Cocoon and The Bed are variations on the same design approach, each with slightly different layouts and features &#8211; they can work individually or as a set for various rooms.</p>

<p>Working fixtures, furniture and furnishings will be appropriated more directly, while more complex structures are being disassembled to be reused as raw materials for shelters and services. While camps have existed in the area for years, they are in constant conflict with authorities and generally lack even basic day-to-day amenities.</p>

<p>Lasting just over a month, Dismaland attracted over 150,000 visitors, featuring works by Banksy and 58 other artists. Dismaland was a surprise installation to the residents of seaside Somerset, England, who were told the construction efforts were building toward a film set for an upcoming movie (images via <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dismaland">Wikipedia</a> and <a href="http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2015/08/dismaland/">Colossal</a>).</p>

<p>Nearly ten feet in diameter each, huge cones render quiet sounds of rustling leaves and birds chirping remarkably audible.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84314" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/forest-wood-projection-sounds-468x312.jpg" alt="forest wood projection sounds" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84316" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/forest-megaphone-design-468x338.jpg" alt="forest megaphone design" width="468" height="338" /></p>
<p>The <a href="http://tonutunnel.com/" target="_blank">Tõnu Tunnel</a> installation was conceived of by interior architecture and design students from the Estonian Academy of Arts and implemented with advice from B210 Architects</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84311" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/forest-sound-project-468x215.jpg" alt="forest sound project" width="468" height="215" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84315" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/forest-megaphones-468x376.jpg" alt="forest megaphones" width="468" height="376" /></p>
<p>Thanks to their size and shape, the megaphones double as seating and shelter as well with space enough for a few hikers to spend the night.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84309" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/forest-musician-468x321.jpg" alt="forest musician" width="468" height="321" /></p>
<p>Each space can also be used in reverse as well by musical or other (small groups of) stage performers wishing to project sounds outward, or can double as seating for shows in the round.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84308" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/forest-wood-construction-project-468x312.jpg" alt="forest wood construction project" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84318" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/student-construction-project-468x312.jpg" alt="student construction project" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>Construction of the megaphones was financed by RMK and the interior architecture department of the EAA. Each was built offsite and carefully transported into place.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84322" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/truck-students-construction-project-468x312.jpg" alt="truck students construction project" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-84310" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/forest-student-construction-468x312.jpg" alt="forest student construction" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>According to Valdur Mikita, a writer and semiotician involved in the project,<i> </i><em>&#8220;The trademark of Estonia is both the abundance of sounds in our forest as well as the silence there. In the megaphones, thoughts can be heard. It is a place for browsing the ‘book of nature,’ for listening to and reading the forest through sound.” </em></p>
