    <p><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-118123" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/mattress-stores-1a-644x438.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="438" /></p>
<p>Mattress stores are so omnipresent these days it&#8217;s become a real struggle for <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2014/01/19/put-to-sleep-12-sad-abandoned-pet-shops-vet-clinics/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sleep</a> shops to stand out from their stuffed, sprung &amp; <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2012/07/01/padding-around-12-cozy-wearable-sleeping-bags/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">padded</a> competition.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-118124" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/mattress-stores-1b-644x1176.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="1176" /></p>
<p>Mattress stores (along with <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2014/08/24/the-bucks-stop-here-9-closed-abandoned-dollar-stores/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dollar stores</a>) are the rats and roaches of the retail apocalypse, spreading across the nation(s) under so many names it&#8217;s hard to keep track of them all. On the flip side, mattress store owners are doing their utmost to rise above the tide. Take Houston-based Mattress Firm, for instance. Flickr member <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/revjdevans/31941287863/in/photostream/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">revjdevans</a> snapped a series of evocative photos that feature a red tube man advertising a store in Shreveport, Louisiana.</p>
<p>Ironically, since 2010 the City of Houston has <em>banned</em> tube men, <a href="https://edocs.publicworks.houstontx.gov/documents/divisions/planning/enforcement/informational_ltr_0019_2009_agds.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stating</a> their use <em>&#8220;contributes to urban visual clutter and blight and adversely affects the aesthetic environment and the safety and quality of life for the community and the citizens of the city.&#8221;</em> Sucks to be you, safe and aesthetic Houston.</p>
<h4>Myers, Myers, Myers!</h4>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-118126" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/mattress-stores-2a-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>Is their life on Myers? More to the point, are there mattresses at Myers&#8230; and if so, WHICH Myers? No less than <em>six</em> Myers-centric sign legends look out from the otherwise subdued-looking store in Crouch End, London, UK. Flickr member <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/emsef/3319473800/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">gingerbeardman</a> found himself &#8220;Myer&#8217;d&#8221; in mattress store heaven (or hell) in February of 2009.</p>
<h4>The Gift of Good Nights</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-118128" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/mattress-stores-3a-644x421.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="421" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-118151" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/mattress-stores-3b-644x174.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="174" /></p>
<p>Most mattresses we&#8217;ve seen better resemble plains than mountains, though perhaps the former is a tad too &#8220;plain&#8221; to use for advertising purposes. Speaking of which, Mountain Mattress in central Appalachia has labeled itself as a <em>&#8220;gift emporium&#8221;</em>. Remind us to reference them next time a friend or family member gets hitched &#8211; they&#8217;ll never, ever forget your thoughtfulness. Kudos to Flickr member <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/da_mere/201942606/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">da_mere</a> for reading the sign&#8217;s double-take-worthy subtext back in the summer of &#8217;06.</p>
<h4>Civil Snore</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-118129" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/mattress-stores-4a-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>Southern sleepers will rise again&#8230; every morning, soon as the alarm goes off. And by &#8220;southern&#8221;, we mean southern Portland, Oregon, according to <a href="https://laughingsquid.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Scott Beale / Laughing Squid</a> who posted the above photo at <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/laughingsquid/7657985610/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Flickr</a>. Beale captured the incongruous (did any Civil War battles take place in Oregon?) mattress store in early 2010, though likely not without a fight.</p>
<h4>Dublin Down</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-118130" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/mattress-stores-5a-644x705.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="705" /></p>
<p>Ethnic humor ain&#8217;t what it used to be &#8211; not that we&#8217;re complaining &#8211; and these days only Canadians, Scots and the Irish are still fair game for stereotypical profiling. Problem? Not for &#8220;Mick&#8221; (if that&#8217;s really your name) of Mattress Mick&#8217;s Superstore in Coolock, Dublin. In related news, it would appear that mattresses are being made in Ireland, presumably stuffed with shamrocks and Lucky Charms marshmallows&#8230; NTTAWWT. Flickr member <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/infomatique/23650063934/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">William Murphy</a> photo-documented Mattress Mick&#8217;s garish storefront in early 2016.</p>

<p>A pivotal institution in the early development of Modernism, the iconic Bauhuas school in Germany has been renovated to match its 1926 look and feel, complete with studios and sleeping spaces now open to the public.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-115599" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/historic-bauhaus-644x470.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="470" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-115600" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/bauhauus-bunk-644x405.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="405" /></p>
<p>The student rooms, now available for rent, are small, minimally appointed and feature private balconies, designed as spaces to sleep, hang up one&#8217;s clothes and work a bit in a chair at a desk, but mainly austere to drive people to collaborate in studio spaces.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-115598" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/buahahus-working-644x475.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="475" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-115604" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/bauhaus-dessau-interior-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>Today, for around $50 a night, designers and fans alike can visit this place in Dessau and marvel at the proto-Modernist architecture, enjoying designs made both by and for students and teachers.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-115601" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/bauhaus-exterior-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>In the early 1900s, Walter Gropius pioneered a few form of functionalism and minimalism that would go on to shape not just Modern architecture but also graphic, industrial, furniture and interior design.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-115603" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/bauhaus-rooms-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>Combining an Arts-and-Crafts ethos with an industrial aesthetic, the school attracted talent from around Europe, and molded young minds to think about design in new ways. The institution itself moved around over the decades, from Weimar to Dessau and Berlin then back again.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-115602" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/auhaus-balcony-644x812.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="812" /></p>
<p>At any given time, teachers like Vassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee taught around 200 students to fuse ideas from diverse disciplines including art, advertising, manufacturing and construction. The building itself features an innovative curtain wall system, and while it may look like a familiar form of Modernist design today, it was an early example of a movement that would become the International Style.</p>

<p>Reasoning that a full-time train pass costs less than an apartment, a 23-year-old German writer and student has exchanged her life in a fixed location for one in perpetual motion. At the equivalent of $380 a month, she can catch a ride anytime day or night, and much more comfortably than other <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2015/05/05/high-tech-hobos-train-hopping-vagabonds-of-the-digital-age/">contemporary high-tech hobos</a>.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-83435" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/life-on-train-468x466.jpg" alt="life on train" width="468" height="466" /></p>
<p>Everything Leonie Müller needs travels with her in a single backpack, making it easy to switch rides or catch the overnight rail, washing up in the onboard restrooms. In a strange reversal of convention, it is cheaper for her to use her pass and sleep aboard than to stay in one place.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-83442" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/train-travel-exclusively-468x351.png" alt="train travel exclusively" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p>Europe&#8217;s extensive train network, most impressive (and consistently on time) in Germany, provides various speeds of travel and connections to just about any town or city, enabling Leonie to visit friends or crash with family without much effort or planning.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-83441" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/train-station-468x263.jpg" alt="train station" width="468" height="263" /></p>

<p>The move (or: moving) be permanent, but for now the costs and lifestyle make sense to her and provides material for her thesis project on nomadic living. She writes papers for school and posts for her <a href="http://www.tyatravel.com/">blog</a> while riding, and recommends noise-cancelling headphones for those who would follow her footsteps (or rail tracks, as it were).</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-64184" alt="Napping Furniture Main" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Napping-Furniture-Main.jpg" width="468" height="400" /></p>
<p>Everybody knows that there&#8217;s no better place to take a nap than a <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2012/07/30/luxury-lounging-13-tantalizingly-tranquil-hammocks/">hammock hung in a scenic location</a>, but what about when you&#8217;re stuck at home, or at the office, or on a city bus? Instead of making do with an upright chair, the hard surface of your desk or a stranger&#8217;s shoulder, try these 15 nap-worthy (and sometimes ridiculous) loungers, sleep suits and head-supporting pillows.</p>
<h4>Energy Pod</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-64173" alt="Napping Furniture EnergyPod" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Napping-Furniture-EnergyPod.jpg" width="468" height="600" /></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Among the perks of working at Google is escaping every now and then to take a nap in one of these bizarre-looking <a href="http://geekologie.com/2007/05/energypod-makes-napping-futuri.php">EnergyPods</a>, which cost about $8K each. Reclined at just the right angle for optimal blood flow throughout the body, the pod has a visor that flips down to envelop the user in a private, soundproof space, and it even has built-in Bose speakers if you&#8217;d like to drift off to music.</span></p>
<h4>Vitrea Living Tower</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-64182" alt="Napping Furniture Vitrea 1" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Napping-Furniture-Vitrea-1.jpg" width="468" height="377" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-64183" alt="Napping Furniture Vitrea 2" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Napping-Furniture-Vitrea-2.jpg" width="468" height="513" /></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><a href="http://www.vitra.com/en-us/product/living-tower">This classic design</a>, first introduced in 1969, is an organically shaped seating tower that allows you to recline in a variety of positions. The unit can be used alone &#8211; either freestanding or pushed up against a wall &#8211; or put together to create a sort of seating cave.</span></p>
<h4>Human Burrito</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-64169" alt="Napping Furniture Blandito" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Napping-Furniture-Blandito.jpg" width="468" height="600" /></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Turn yourself into a human burrito with the <a href="http://www.behance.net/gallery/BLANDITO-Transformable-pad-for-lazy-living/667146">Blandito</a>, a transformable pad for lounging in virtually any position you can think of. The pad can be rolled, bunched and scrunched in all sorts of different ways. The idea was to make the simplest possible product &#8211; essentially a sofa with no arms, legs, back or any real structure whatsoever &#8211; as multi-purpose as it can be. That&#8217;s achieved with just a little bit of fabric, foam and some elastic connectors.</span></p>
<h4>DIY Hammock Bed</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-64175" alt="Napping Furniture Hammock bed" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Napping-Furniture-Hammock-bed.jpg" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">A fun twist on the conventional hammock design,</span><a style="line-height: 1.5em;" href="https://weburbanist.com/2012/07/30/luxury-lounging-13-tantalizingly-tranquil-hammocks/"> this DIY creation </a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">is simply some net strung across an open space leading from one level of an office to another. Would you be able to get any work done if this thing was installed right next to your desk?</span></p>
<h4>FEEL Seating System</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-64174" alt="Napping Furniture Feel Seating System" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Napping-Furniture-Feel-Seating-System.jpg" width="468" height="600" /></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Over 120 soft foam balls make up the &#8216;<a href="http://www.animicausa.com/shop/Modern-Furniture-and-Lighting/Feel-Seating-System-Deluxe/tpflypage.tpl.html">Feel Seating System</a>&#8216;, which can be bunched up in any number of configurations to reflect &#8220;the ever changing emotional state of the body.&#8221; Sit on it, lay on it, or wrap it around you like a cocoon.</span></p>

<p>You may have seen some strange and unique accommodations on AirBNB, but few hosts can boast something as unusual as <a href="http://faktumhotels.com/">Faktum Hotels</a>, an unreal room-free resort in Sweden.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="homeless shelter hostel rooms" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/homeless-shelter-hostel-rooms.jpg" width="468" height="620" /></p>
<p>Their offerings are entirely out in the open air, doubling as an awareness-raising campaign for the city&#8217;s homeless and and actual alternative sleeping space for those same citizens.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="homeless urban living awareness" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/homeless-urban-living-awareness.jpg" width="468" height="632" /></p>
<p>So if not rooms, then what are you actually booking? A sleeping bag, or simply a secluded space &#8230; everywhere an actual vagabond or vagrant might occupy, including park benches, public restrooms, abandoned buildings, bridge underpasses and below bleachers.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="homeless street parking spaces" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/homeless-street-parking-spaces.jpg" width="468" height="781" /></p>
<p>And how much to reserve one of these temporary hobo hostels? The rate for each of these 10 surreal pseudo-spaces is just 10 Euros per night &#8230; proceeds of which go to charity work supported by Faktum Magazine.</p>
