<p>Thousands of people get to gaze at beautiful original artwork while taking a ride from one place to another in Mumbai, India, bringing exposure to local design talent through a new form of urban art. <a href="http://www.taxifabric.org/#twelve">The Taxi Fabric Project</a> beautifies this often impersonal mode of transport, making cabs stand out as individuals in a crowded sea of cars and creating mobile galleries that immerse riders in a particular artist’s imagined world.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-83682" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/taxi-fabric-project-10-468x325.jpg" alt="taxi fabric project 10" width="468" height="325" /></p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-83677" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/taxi-fabric-project-5-468x325.jpg" alt="taxi fabric project 5" width="468" height="325" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-83681" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/taxi-fabric-project-9-468x319.jpg" alt="taxi fabric project 9" width="468" height="319" /></p>
<p>“Design &#8211; as a job or studied at school &#8211; is unfortunately not widely recognized in India,” say the creators of the project. “Older generations don’t understand it. Design to them just performs a function. Many people don’t know that design can create a real impact. With so few spaces for young people to show off their skills, it’s hard to change that perception.”</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-83674" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/taxi-fabric-project-2-468x311.jpg" alt="taxi fabric project 2" width="468" height="311" /></p>

<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-83680" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/taxi-fabric-project-8-468x312.jpg" alt="taxi fabric project 8" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p>In a city where cabs are the most convenient and common way to get around, this unusual mashup of art and transportation has the potential to get a lot of people excited about design and curious about the artists. Up to 30 taxis will be made over for the project, printing colorful works onto fabric and stitching it directly to the interior surfaces of each car.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-83678" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/taxi-fabric-project-6-468x311.jpg" alt="taxi fabric project 6" width="468" height="311" /></p>

<p>One notable example is ‘A Century of Revolt’ by Kunel Gaur, which illustrates the Indian Independence in a fresco-inspired style. Another &#8211; ‘Monad’ by Samia Arif &#8211; reminds Indians how similar their culture is to that of neighboring Pakistan, while conflicts continue to rage between the two countries.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-83683" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/taxi-fabric-project-11-468x312.jpg" alt="taxi fabric project 11" width="468" height="312" /></p>

<p>‘Happily Ever After’ by Shaivalini Kumar celebrates the landmarks of Mumbai. “The architecture of Mumbai blends Gothic, Victorian, Art Deco, Indo-Saracenic and contemporary architectural styles. Many buildings, structures and historical monuments remain from the colonial era. All these buildings coexist beautifully and are also as resilient as the amazing people of Mumbai.”</p>

<p>Airports take up vast amounts of valuable real estate in and around urban areas, but what if we could get to and from planes faster, make takeoffs and landings easier, and save city space in the process?</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81897" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/raised-integrated-urban-fabric-468x334.jpg" alt="raised integrated urban fabric" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p>The Airport City project proposes a radical reinvention of the airport, elevating tracks above roadways and waterways in the heart of Stockholm, Sweden.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81899" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/raised-elevated-plane-system-468x334.jpg" alt="raised elevated plane system" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p>With ground-powered plane taxi systems tied to this track setup, noise and air pollution could be reduced as well, but the critical concept is the degree of urban integration and reduction of single-use architecture and infrastructure associated with a conventional airport.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81895" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/raised-plane-waterway-city-468x662.jpg" alt="raised plane waterway city" width="468" height="662" /></p>
<p>Designed by Alex Sutton, graduate of the Bartlett School of Architecture, the idea may not be ready for lift-off anytime soon, but it nonetheless invites designers and travelers alike to rethink the current typology of contemporary airports and how we will accommodate increased air travel in future urban designs.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81898" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/raised-urban-airport-design-468x334.jpg" alt="raised urban airport design" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81900" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/urban-raised-taxi-tracks-468x334.jpg" alt="urban raised taxi tracks" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81896" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/raised-plane-experience-city-468x334.jpg" alt="raised plane experience city" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p>As automation increasingly transforms airplane travel processes and planes get quieter, there is something magical about imagining we could watch flights take off right within our cities, and step right off of planes into downtowns.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81894" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/raised-urban-taxiing-system-468x932.jpg" alt="raised urban taxiing system" width="468" height="932" /></p>
<p>From the designer: <em>&#8220;Travel demand in the aviation industry is set to double by 2030 and continue increasing exponentially into the future. In order to satisfy demand and the increasing importance of the airport on local economies, capacity in the industry needs to increase. This project uses Stockholm, one of the fastest growing cities in Europe, as a testing ground to establish a fully integrated urban airport as part of a new city district, in a time when aviation technology is such that aircraft and airports could operate from within our cities.&#8221;</em></p>

<p>Fathoms beyond traditional boat taxis, this modular water bus proposal for Stockholm bridges critical gaps within the current public transit system while also making boarding faster and transfers easier.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-67812" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/water-bus-sketch-idea-468x270.jpg" alt="water bus sketch idea" width="468" height="270" /></p>
<p>Developed by the KTH Royal Institute of Technology’s Department of Aeronautical and Vehicle Engineering, the <a href="http://www.kth.se/en/aktuellt/nyheter/vattenburen-kollektivtrafik-sa-ska-stockholm-lyckas-1.476235">Waterway 365</a> project fills in transportation voids, in part by taking the quickest and most direct routes possible across the water. Featuring wide back and side exits as well as, the solution is also bike-friendly for rapid boarding and disembarking. Adding versatility to the design, modular detachable sections make the approach more adaptable to different passenger volumes.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-67813" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/water-bus-flow-diagram-468x440.jpg" alt="water bus flow diagram" width="468" height="440" /></p>
<p>These water buses are also designed to run year-round, operating through winter freezes. To save materials and energy, the designers eschewed steel reinforced hulls in favor of lighter metal. The resulting vehicles are structured to handle some ice but are ultimately to be paired with ice-breaking plow boats as needed in extreme conditions. Initially envisioned for the country&#8217;s biggest city, the idea is to deploy these to bridge other urban waterways around Sweden as well.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-67814" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/water-bus-route-map-468x334.jpg" alt="water bus route map" width="468" height="334" /></p>
<p><span style="color: #111111;">From the design study: <em>&#8220;A city comprised of islands, Stockholm seems a natural for the concept of water transit. Door-to-door travel time on at least one typical trip across town, the study shows, could potentially be reduced by one-third.</em></span><em>&#8221; </em>Connecting essential nodes, the idea is to reduce congestion as well as energy consumption in the long run.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-67825" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/water-and-land-vehicles-468x166.jpg" alt="water and land vehicles" width="468" height="166" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-67815" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/nautical-bus-taxi-design-468x147.jpg" alt="nautical bus taxi design" width="468" height="147" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-67828" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/water-train-horizontal-468x153.jpg" alt="water train horizontal" width="468" height="153" /></p>
<p>Water-based public transit already exists in many places, including the canals of Venice, but generally utilizes either flat-style ferries or streamlined boats. These approaches represent two extremes that this new water bus design aims to navigate between &#8211; the ease of getting on and off, on the one hand, versus speed and handling of the vehicle on the other.</p>

Taxis have a checkered history and few mourn when one or more of the used, abused and <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2008/09/15/24-eerie-abandoned-vehicles-and-transit-structures/" target="_blank">disused</a> private <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2013/09/08/transits-of-venus-8-women-only-subway-train-cars/" target="_blank">transit</a> vehicles reaches the end of the meter.</p>
<p><span id="more-65615"></span></p>
<h4>Austin Powerless</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-65617" alt="abandoned London Taxi cab" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/cabs_1.jpg" width="468" height="815" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(image via: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/aqualite/382290979/in/set-72157594516364272">Aqualite</a>)</span></p>
<p>The historic “London Black Cab” isn&#8217;t and wasn&#8217;t always painted black, a few of the iconic Austin FX4 taxis sported other shades including the more-familiar (to North Americans, at least) bright yellow. The late model taxi above was visually captured by Flickr user <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/aqualite/sets/72157594516364272/with/382290979/" target="_blank">Aqualite</a> in late 1997 using a cheap disposable camera that imbues the sorry scene with an extra degree of decrepit-ness. A little WD-40 and that&#8217;ll buff right out though.</p>
<h4>Yellow Sea</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-65618" alt="yellow cabs Chongqing China " src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/cabs_2a.jpg" width="468" height="735" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="https://plus.google.com/+ValidMesic/posts/1VAsJPhy6Wf">Valid Mesic</a> and <a href="http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/6fa938d6-dde2-11de-b8e2-00144feabdc0.html#axzz2w2sTPehv">Financial Times</a>)</span></p>
<p>Taxis may be economical conveyances but their numbers are governed by the laws of economics: the more demand there is for taxicabs, the more will enter the market&#8230; and vice versa. Even Chongqing, China&#8217;s shiny fleet of yellow, natural gas-powered cabs isn&#8217;t immune to the negative implications of positive economic growth.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-65619" alt="abandoned yellow taxi cabs Chongqing China" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/cabs_2b.jpg" width="468" height="475" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(image via: <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8400997.stm">BBC News</a>)</span></p>
<p>The scene of post-apocalyptic taxicab desolation above dates from March 4th, 2009, and features some of the hundreds of abandoned taxis dumped in a field (though doubtless more than a few are in decent running condition). As China&#8217;s working classes become more wealthy and upwardly mobile, they&#8217;re showing their new status by buying cars of their own. Good for Chinese automakers; not so much for China&#8217;s taxicabs and their drivers.</p>
<h4>Hong Kong Gone Wrong</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-65621" alt="abandoned Hong Kong red Nissan Cedric LPG taxi cab" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/cabs_3.jpg" width="468" height="1035" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://sgforums.com/forums/1802/topics/149270?page=2">SG Forums</a>)</span></p>
<p>Taxis in Hong Kong are color-coded with red being most expensive, green less so, and blue the lowest-priced. The LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) powered 2002 Nissan Cedric cab above, recently abandoned for unknown reasons, looks little the worse for wear&#8230; the meter inside might still be running.</p>
<h4>Down &amp; Out In Dakar</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-65645" alt="abandoned taxi Dakar Senegal" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/cabs_14.jpg" width="468" height="680" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(image via: <a href="http://www.panoramio.com/photo/70109407">Babacar</a>)</span></p>
<p>In Dakar, Senegal, the streets&#8217; soft shoulders really are soft. They also make great places to abandon a taxi though by the looks of it, the African city&#8217;s Fadia neighborhood looks more than a little abandoned itself. Salutations and stuff to Panoramio user <a href="http://www.panoramio.com/user/6794434?with_photo_id=70109407" target="_blank">Babacar</a> for venturing out into Fadia&#8217;s mean streets to snap this dusty castoff cab.</p>
<h4>Abandoned But Still Inhabited</h4>
<p>When is an abandoned taxi still useful? When it&#8217;s inhabited by the world&#8217;s most desperate denizens, for example. Photographer Nyani Quarmyne discovered one such lost soul, Mohammed, who lives in an abandoned taxi parked behind his mother&#8217;s house in Kueyor, eastern Sierra Leone. Canadian writer <a href="http://www.guernicamag.com/features/heaven-hell-and-earth/" target="_blank">Catherine Cooper documents</a> the lives of some of Sierra Leone&#8217;s mentally ill citizens, fighting to survive in a war-torn land woefully lacking in the resources required to treat them. As miserable as Mohammed&#8217;s existence may seem at first glance, he&#8217;s still better off living independently in an abandoned cab compared to others unable to exploit that &#8220;luxury&#8221;.</p>
