<p>When a cold front blew in over Lake Ontario, photographer <a href="https://www.facebook.com/JohnKuckoDigital/">John Kucko</a> caught wind of the phenomenon and rushed to shoot images of a remarkably frozen home.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102191" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/iced-over-house-644x644.jpg" alt="iced over house" width="644" height="644" /></p>
<p>Located in Webster, New York, the house is entirely trapped inside ice, a combination of sheets and icicles wrapping the residence on all sides. Outdoor furniture and landscaping elements between the lake and the house were likewise wrapped in frozen water.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102189" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/cold-front-644x429.jpg" alt="cold front" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>An unusual combination of waves, wind and freezing weather contributed to the mix, as well as the home&#8217;s proximity to the lake. Winds over 80 mile per hour pushed water the short twenty feet to the residence. You can see more images and videos on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/JohnKuckoDigital/">photographers Facebook page</a>.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102193" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/ice-house-detroit-1-644x533.jpg" alt="ice house detroit" width="644" height="533" /></p>
<p>Years ago, <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2013/12/25/intricate-ice-architecture-17-fantastic-frozen-buildings/2/">artists in Detroit</a> did something similar but intentional with an abandoned home, showering it with water and letting it ice over for effect.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-95903" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/modern-round-house-644x385.jpg" alt="modern round house" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p>Combining the physical benefits of circular plans with the practicality of straight lines and corners, octagonal houses are uniquely positioned to resist hurricanes, tsunamis and earthquakes that threaten coastlines.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-95904" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/round-house-avoids-destruction-644x429.jpg" alt="round house avoids destruction" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>Rounded habitats have a long history, from tipis and yurts through the geodesic domes of Buckminster Fuller. Indeed, round homes make sense for a lot of reasons. They have less surface area, which means they require less construction material and have greater energy efficiency, for instance. Critically, rounded homes are also ideal for resisting extreme weather (above: a regular home destroyed in a storm and a surviving semi-round house).</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-95900" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/round-house-diagram-644x451.jpg" alt="round house diagram" width="644" height="451" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-95899" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/round-house-functionality-644x451.jpg" alt="round house functionality" width="644" height="451" /></p>
<p>Flat sides pose a significant structural risk during hurricanes and tsunamis. It is much easier for wind and water to flow around a round house than a square or rectangular one.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-95905" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/round-structural-design-644x483.jpg" alt="round structural design" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>In modern rounded house designs, radial floor and roof trusses meet in a center ring like spokes on a wheel and thus lock the building in a constant state of compression, which further reinforces its structural integrity. This approach also helps them resist earthquakes.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-95906" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/round-interior-644x421.jpg" alt="round interior" width="644" height="421" /></p>
<p>Of course, fitting furniture along the edges of a truly round house can be frustrating. The space and materials saved are nice, but the usability of the resulting spaces is diminished.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-95907" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/round-house-644x508.jpg" alt="round house" width="644" height="508" /></p>
<p>Today, many round-house makers opt for a middle ground and go with octagonal floor plans (or other variants with more than four sides). Doubling the number of walls, this represents the best of both worlds in many ways. These are easier to construct with contemporary materials and techniques, but still take advantage of wind- and water-resistance found in edge-less dwellings.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-95902" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/round-edge-house-644x385.jpg" alt="round edge house" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p>Deltac, one manufacturer of such semi-round structures, boasts that none of their 5,000 homes built to date has been knocked down by nature. These kinds of homes also have an added benefit for those living along coasts, where storms are a great thread: their shapes provide seaside dwellers with amazing panoramic views (images via <a href="http://www.deltechomes.com/">Deltac</a> and <a href="https://www.caymanvillas.com/vacation-rental/little-cayman-escape/">Cayman</a>).</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-95901" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/round-houses-surviv-644x362.jpg" alt="round houses surviv" width="644" height="362" /></p>

<p>Home to the tallest building in the world, Dubai is a city rich in skyscrapers that seem almost otherworldly when seen piercing through seasonal layers of urban fog.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75219" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/dubai-city-aerial-view-468x261.jpg" alt="dubai city aerial view" width="468" height="261" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75218" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/dubai-sunrise-cloud-city-468x261.jpg" alt="dubai sunrise cloud city" width="468" height="261" /></p>
<p>Photographer <a href="http://www.danielcheongphotography.com/Website-Assets/About-Me/n-4btkn">Daniel Cheong</a> resides in this surreal desert city and has taken to capturing images of it from above, particularly during times when the weather is transitioning from warm to cool and producing the effects seen in these shots.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75213" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/dubai-cryogenic-marina-468x312.jpg" alt="dubai cryogenic marina" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75215" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/dubai-dawn-cloud-city-468x284.jpg" alt="dubai dawn cloud city" width="468" height="284" /></p>
<p>In some cases the viewer can see glimpses of the streets, buildings and marina below, but in others the entire built landscape appears perched on a layer of clouds.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75217" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/dubai-fluidity-urban-photo-468x284.jpg" alt="dubai fluidity urban photo" width="468" height="284" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75212" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/dubai-landing-planet-468x303.jpg" alt="dubai landing planet" width="468" height="303" /></p>
<p>While his photographs do represent reality, they also employ digital blending techniques that combine multiple exposures to make them seem almost more real than reality (but without the stretched effects sometimes seen in overly-processed HDR).</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75216" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/dubai-fog-blues-468x295.jpg" alt="dubai fog blues" width="468" height="295" /></p>
<p>In doing so, he emphasizes <em>&#8220;this slight element of the surreal, or hyper-reality often found in painting.&#8221;</em> A world traveler, Cheong was &#8220;born in Mauritius, originally of Chinese descent, and French by nationality.&#8221; Of his picture-taking prowess, he writes: <em>&#8220;I&#8217;ve always loved photography, but only became serious about it when I bought my first DSLR in Singapore, back in 2006.&#8221;</em></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75214" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/dubai-cryogenic-sunrise-468x280.jpg" alt="dubai cryogenic sunrise" width="468" height="280" /></p>
<p><em>&#8220;I then aimed to perfect the technique of Digital Blending, which consists of manually blending multiple bracketed exposures in order to obtain the maximum dynamic range, while trying to keep a very natural look and avoiding the common mistake of many &#8216;overcooked&#8217; HDR images. This slight element of the surreal, or hyper reality often found in painting is what I am trying to achieve&#8221;</em></p>

<p>An uniquely elegant solution to a dirty everyday problem, these gorgeous handcrafted tile mosaics are turning unfilled potholes back into functional pieces of city street surface all over Chicago.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-72751" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/flower-art-context-view-468x623.jpg" alt="flower art context view" width="468" height="623" /></p>
<p>This time with an emphasis on beautification, mosaic maker <a href="http://bachor.com/">Jim Bachor</a> is back at it again. He is somewhat widely known in the area for using <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2014/06/06/urban-infill-colorful-tile-mosaics-patch-potholed-streets/">Chicago flags and and other city-themed infill</a> to patch problematic holes in the urban fabric previously.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-72755" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/flower-tiles-city-streets-468x351.jpg" alt="flower tiles city streets" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-72754" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/flower-tile-chicago-artwork-468x623.jpg" alt="flower tile chicago artwork" width="468" height="623" /></p>
<p>More on the artist&#8217;s background and inspiration: &#8220;<em>Volunteering to work on an archaeological dig in Pompeii helped merge these two interests in to my art. In the ancient world, mosaics were used to capture images of everyday life. These colorful pieces of stone or glass set in mortar were the photographs of empires long past. Marble and glass do not fade. Mortar is mortar. An ancient mosaic looks exactly as intended by the artist who produced it over two millennia ago. What else can claim that kind of staying power? I find this idea simply amazing.&#8221;</em></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-72753" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/flower-artist-tile-chicago-468x351.jpg" alt="flower artist tile chicago" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p>In part, his work on the streets aims to draw attention to the 500,000+ potholes that remain unfixed at any given time, in part a byproduct of the harsh temperature shifts from winter to summer and back again (or as is said in the Midwest: &#8216;winter and road repair&#8217; seasons).</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-72756" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/flower-pothole-infill-art-468x623.jpg" alt="flower pothole infill art" width="468" height="623" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-72757" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/flower-mosaic-pot-holes-468x623.jpg" alt="flower mosaic pot holes" width="468" height="623" /></p>
<p><em>&#8220;Using the same materials, tools and methods of the archaic craftsmen, I create mosaics that speak of modern things in an ancient voice. My work locks into mortar unexpected concepts drawn from the </em><em>present &#8230; it surprises the viewer while challenging long-held notions of what a mosaic should be. Like low-tech pixels, hundreds if not thousands of tiny, hand-cut pieces of Italian glass and marble comprise my work.&#8221;</em></p>

<p>A simple but provocative piece of dynamic home decor, this thundering cloud can be set to react to its environment, picking up cues from the weather or turning stormy on demand.</p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://player.vimeo.com/video/86711365' allowfullscreen frameborder='0'></iframe></div></p>
<p>Designed and sold by <a href="http://www.richardclarkson.com/">Richard Clarkson</a>, The Cloud is interactive light(n)ing piece made not just to look a thundercloud but also to create multicolored lights and generate customizable sounds. It can be set to automatic modes or manually operated by remote control to simulate different natural and synthetic effects.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-69106" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/home-lightning-cloud-closeup-468x312.jpg" alt="home lightning cloud closeup" width="468" height="312" /></p>

<p>From its creator:  <em>&#8220;The Cloud is an interactive lamp and speaker system, designed to mimic a thundercloud in both appearance and entertainment. Using motion sensors the cloud detects a user’s presence and creates a unique lightning and thunder show dictated by their movement.&#8221;</em></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-69109" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/thunder-cloud-detail-468x411.gif" alt="thunder-cloud-detail" width="468" height="411" /></p>

<p><em>&#8220;The system features a powerful speaker system from which the user can stream music via any Bluetooth compatible device. Using color-changing lights the cloud is able to adapt to the desired lighting color and brightness. The cloud also has alternative modes such as a nightlight and music reactive mode.&#8221;</em></p>
