Honingham Earth Sheltered Social Housing
Four bungalows are tucked beneath layers of plants to retain heat at the Honingham Earth Sheltered Social Housing Scheme in Norfolk. With no other heating or cooling system required, energy bills are as low as £4 per week. Each two bedroom residence has large windows facing south to take in light and warmth.
Underground House by KWK Promes
All clean lines and bright white exterior finishes, ‘Autofamily House’ by KWK Promes represents a new way of thinking about the integration of vehicles into a home. Rather than keeping the garage separate, the house is built around the capability of driving right into the interior while maintaining maximum green space on the surface. The way the home curves up out of the grassy landscape is reminiscent of a massive sea creature breaching the surface of the ocean.
Modern Hillside Houses by BAUEN, Paraguay
The curving roofs of these two homes just barely peek above the vivid green hills of Luque, Paraguay, marrying modern style with earth-sheltered traditions. Architecture firm BAUEN used the earth displaced by the construction project to build the hills back up around each home, stabilizing interior temperatures.
Sunken Lily Pond House
This dream of an underground house looks out onto its own private lily pond – from an indoor swimming pool. It’s actually an extension of the more conventional home located just up the hill, and connected to it by underground passage. Italian architecture firm Act_Romegialli expanded the available living space for the early 1900s liberty building without taking away from usable outdoor space or daylight to the main house.
