<p>Is there anything that can’t be convincingly <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2017/03/22/not-just-for-kids-14-complex-creative-lego-inspired-projects/">reproduced to scale with LEGOs?</a> Enthusiasts of these plastic toy bricks are constantly taking their creations to the next level, and full-scale (and often functional) vehicles continue to rank among the most impressive competitive LEGO projects in the land. Just a few months after <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2018/09/09/step-on-it-life-size-lego-teardrop-trailer-travels-well/">a unique LEGO trailer</a> made its debut at the British National Motor Museum in Beaulieu, LEGO certified master model maker Rene Hoffmeister and Pascal Lenhardbuilt present an incredible LEGO Volkswagen Type 2 Kombi camper van.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/LEGO-volkswagen-camper-2.jpg" alt="" width="750" height="563" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-118539" /></p>
<p><img decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/LEGO-volkswagen-camper-4.jpg" alt="" width="750" height="500" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-118538" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/LEGO-volkswagen-camper-5.jpg" alt="" width="750" height="500" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-118537" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/LEGO-volkswagen-camper-3.jpg" alt="" width="750" height="500" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-118536" /></p>
<p>Unveiled at the <a href="https://www.free-muenchen.de/index-2.html">F.re.e Travel and Leisure Fair</a> in Germany, the model was built around a steel tube frame and features a pop-up camper top, charming retro interiors full of fun period details, a sink, dishes, a coffee serving set, toothbrushes, a gas stove, working lights and &#8211; most impressively &#8211; a functional sliding door. Weighing 1,543 pounds and measuring over 16.4 feet long, the camper can accommodate the weight of two adults. It took 400,000 LEGO bricks to complete. Maybe it doesn’t start and roll down the road &#8211; but <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2014/12/15/amazing-lego-gadgets-art/">there are other LEGO cars that do.</a></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/lego-caravan-10-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-118541" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/lego-caravan-8-1-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-118542" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/lego-caravan-1-960x691.jpg" alt="" width="960" height="691" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-118543" /></p>
<p>Previously, a LEGO building specialist called Bright Bricks broke the Guinness World Record for the “largest caravan built with interlocking plastic bricks” using 215,158 LEGOs. The teardrop trailer boasted electric power, a fold-up beda vase of LEGO flowers and more, and weighed 2,645 pounds measuring 11.8 feet long. While the new camper appears to best this one by quite a lot, it remains to be seen whether it’ll be officially recognized as a new winner.</p>

<p>Play on, LEGO brick layer, &#8217;cause the projects adults are coming up with using these little plastic toy bricks are totally incredible. Some amazing recent creations either made from or inspired by LEGO bricks include a functional camera that prints photos, a plastic helmet based on LEGO figures&#8217; bowl-cut hair, stop-motion animation, a life-sized Batmobile and a robot that folds and flies paper airplanes.</p>
<h4>Twin-Lens LEGO Camera Prints Photos</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102115" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/lego-camera-644x472.jpg" alt="lego camera" width="644" height="472" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102114" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/lego-camera-3-644x421.jpg" alt="lego camera 3" width="644" height="421" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102116" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/lego-camera-2-644x430.jpg" alt="lego camera 2" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/9Py17nrlGe4?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>Making use of two retrofitted camera components and a LEGO brick housing, this fun model by a Hong Kong photographer blogging as <a href="https://instaxmagic.wordpress.com">Instax Magic</a> doesn’t just take real photos, it also prints them. Taking lenses from a vintage Japanese Yashica camera and an ejection mechanism modified from a Fuji Instax mini camera, the creation playfully incorporates LEGO elements like figurines, fences and turbines. After seeing a neighbor throw a box of toy bricks in the trash, the photographer says “I started to think about the possibility of modifying a camera with LEGO. My impression is that there is always some creative way to use LEGO.”</p>
<h4>LEGO Claw Shopping Bag</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102090" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/lego-claw-shopping-bag-644x944.jpg" alt="lego claw shopping bag" width="644" height="944" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102089" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/lego-claw-shopping-bag-2-644x429.jpg" alt="lego claw shopping bag 2" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>Walk down the street looking like you’ve got a yellow LEGO claw for a hand with this fun promotional shopping bag by New York-based advertising and designers Junho Lee and <a href="https://evanchoi.squarespace.com/#/lego-playbox/">Hyun Chun Choi</a>. The illusion only works when you’re wearing long sleeves, and you clutch a fabric ribbon hidden inside to hold the bag.</p>
<h4>Intentional Helmet Hair, Courtesy of LEGO</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102088" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/lego-bike-helmet-644x486.jpg" alt="lego bike helmet" width="644" height="486" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102087" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/lego-bike-helmet-2-644x374.jpg" alt="lego bike helmet 2" width="644" height="374" /></p>
<p>Helmet hair is actually desirable if you wanna bike around town looking like a LEGO figure that sprouted to real-life dimensions. Design firm MOEF created a functional bicycle helmet mimicking the proportions and characteristics of the original plastic toy thanks to 3D scanning. Right now, it’s just a prototype, but it could go into production with the aim of encouraging kids to wear helmets.</p>
<h4>LEGO Stop-Motion Marriage Proposal</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102113" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/lego-stop-motion-marriage-proposal-644x378.jpg" alt="lego stop motion marriage proposal" width="644" height="378" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://player.vimeo.com/video/34632994' allowfullscreen frameborder='0'></iframe></div></p>
<p>It took Atlanta-based filmmaker Walt Thompson 22 hours, 2,600 photos and hundreds of LEGOs to create a<a href="http://www.designboom.com/art/lego-stop-motion-marriage-proposal/"> stop-motion animation marriage proposal</a> to his girlfriend of four years, Nealey Dozier, even going so far as to dress the LEGO couple in outfits that matched what the real-life couple wore when they met.</p>
<h4>Enlarged LEGO Vehicles in Real-Life Environments</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102093" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/life-size-lego-cars-644x966.jpg" alt="life size lego cars" width="644" height="966" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102092" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/life-size-lego-cars-2-644x429.jpg" alt="life size lego cars 2" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-102091" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/life-size-lego-cars-3-644x429.jpg" alt="life size lego cars 3" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>What would LEGO Lamborghinis, trucks, camper vans and helicopter models look like if they were kept exactly as they are, but enlarged to fit into the real world? Pretty ridiculous, as it turns out in this series of digital images by Italian photographer <a href="http://www.domenicofranco.it">Domenico Franco</a>, which sets them among Italian scenery. But at the same time, the models are so familiar, they don’t seem particularly out of place. “The aim is to transform ordinary contexts into extraordinary ones, thus compelling the toys to get out of the idyllic and politically correct landscapes belonging to their perfect and idealistic cities, with the result of instilling them in those vices, virtues and desires typical of human beings.” says Franco.</p>

<p>What looks like no more than an unweildy mass of Lego bricks stuck together into an abstract shape reveals itself to be not just one but two separate intricate shadow-casting designs. Artist <a href="http://www.jvmuntean.com">John V. Muntean</a> mounts his unusual sculptures on a special table to rotate them into just the right position in front of a spotlight so we can see what’s hidden within the positive and negative spaces created by the bricks.</p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/p-lEVgo2QYQ?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>

<p>The artist calls it a ‘magic angle sculpture,’ and it’s just the latest of an impressive collection he’s created over the past couple decades. This appears to be the first time he’s worked with Lego bricks, though &#8211; the rest are sculpted wood.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-95820" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/LEGO-Shadows-5-644x559.png" alt="LEGO Shadows 5" width="644" height="559" /></p>

<p>“As a scientist and artist, I am interested in how perception influences our theory of the universe,” says Muntean in his artist statement. “A Magic Angle Sculpture appears to be nothing more than an abstract wooden carving, skewered with a rod and mounted on a base. however, when lit from above and rotated at the magic angle (54.74 degrees) it will cast three alternating shadows. Every 120 degrees of rotation, the amorphous shadows evolve into independent forms. Our scientific interpretation of nature often depends upon our point of view. Perspective matters.”</p>

<p>The phrases &#8216;adult toys&#8217; and ‘city blocks’ take on a different meaning when applied to architecturally sophisticated LEGO sets like these, enabling you to make your own miniature replicas of the cityscapes including the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Berlin TV Tower, St. Mark’s Basilica and much more. The Architecture Skyline Series explores the most famous architectural achievements of three cities: New York, Venice and Berlin.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87472" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/LEGO-skyline-3-468x468.jpg" alt="LEGO skyline 3" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>These aren’t your ordinary blank slate LEGO bricks, from which all manner of creations can spring, but rather very specific pieces for very specific structures.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87473" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/LEGO-skyline-2-468x572.jpg" alt="LEGO skyline 2" width="468" height="572" /></p>
<p>With the NYC package, you’ll get the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Statue of Liberty and Flatiron Building as well as the brand new One World Trade Center. Berlin includes the Reichstag, Victory Column, Deutsche Bahn Tower, Berlin TV Tower and Brandenburg Gate. The Venice model will give you St. Mark’s Basilica and Campanile, Rialto Bridge, St. Theodore and the Winged Lion of St. Mark, and the Bridge of Sighs.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-87471" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/LEGO-skyline-4-468x439.jpg" alt="LEGO skyline 4" width="468" height="439" /></p>

<p>LEGO has been teasing the release of these sets on Facebook for weeks, and has now revealed that they’ll be available on an unnamed date in January 2016. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/LEGOArchitecture/">Follow the company’s Facebook page </a>if you want to be among the first to find out so you can snatch up your own box.</p>

<p>These upcoming sets arrive on the heels of a stunning model of the<a href="http://www.lego.com/en-us/architecture/products/21024-louvre"> Louvre</a> in Paris, as well as <a href="http://www.lego.com/en-us/architecture/explore/architecture-studio">LEGO’s Architecture Studio</a>, which offers 1210 white and transparent bricks to design and build the architecture of your imagination. <p>LEGOs can form the basis of all sorts of amazing things, but would you ever have imagined they could create working prosthetics, mechanical looms, drivable hot-rods and even full-sized houses? These 13 incredible creations test the limits of the little plastic bricks, proving that there&#8217;s no reason to put them aside as &#8216;toys&#8217; when we reach adulthood.</p>
<h4>Wheelchair for a Disabled Tortoise<br />
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-74319" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/strange-LEGO-tortoise-wheelchair-468x271.jpg" alt="strange LEGO tortoise wheelchair" width="468" height="271" /></h4>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/UyuEuS4JPtw?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>Poor little &#8216;Blade&#8217; wasn&#8217;t managing to get around very well on his own, so his human companion brought him in to local veterinarian Carsten Plischke. Realizing the turtle had a disability that made it hard for him to carry his own weight, Plischke <a href="http://www.cnet.com/news/disabled-tortoise-gets-a-lego-wheelchair/">fashioned an adorable little wheelchair</a> out of parts from his son&#8217;s Lego collection.</p>
<h4>LEGO x IKEA: Furniture Animals<br />
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-74318" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/strange-LEGO-IKEA-1-468x417.jpg" alt="strange LEGO IKEA 1" width="468" height="417" /></h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-74317" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/strange-LEGO-IKEA-2-468x358.jpg" alt="strange LEGO IKEA 2" width="468" height="358" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-74316" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/strange-LEGO-IKEA-3-468x311.jpg" alt="strange LEGO IKEA 3" width="468" height="311" /></p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the LEGO and Ikea mashup you never knew you needed: building block animals interwoven with inexpensive Swedish furniture. &#8216;Venereal Architecture&#8217; by <a href="http://www.claireandsean.com/">Claire Healy and Sean Cordeiro </a>includes a lion, deer, stingray, snake, tortoise, octopus and other creatures built around various Ikea items. &#8220;As humans we are ever adapting and manipulating our environment to cope with the elements and creatures that share our spaces. We build structures that enclose and protect us from nature. Air conditioning controls the temperature and we domesticate animals so they can live with us.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Our control over nature (or lack there of) is central to this body of work. Lego and Ikea furniture are very similar in a sense: they are both objects of aspiration that require assembly… both products represent destruction and re-construction, which are concerns we revisit continually within our practice.&#8221;</p>
<h4>Working LEGO Gadgets<br />
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-74315" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/strange-LEGO-gadgets-1-468x391.jpg" alt="strange LEGO gadgets 1" width="468" height="391" /></h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-74314" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/working-LEGO-gadgets-2-468x447.jpg" alt="working LEGO gadgets 2" width="468" height="447" /></p>
<p>Officially released by LEGO themselves after a collaboration with a company that specializes in children&#8217;s tech products, this <a href="http://www.designboom.com/technology/lego-gadgets/">fun range of gadgets</a> includes working electronic items like walkie talkies, boom boxes, alarm clocks, cameras and even an MP3 player.</p>
<h4>Digitally Synced LEGO Calendar<br />
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-74313" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/strange-LEGO-calendar-468x308.jpg" alt="strange LEGO calendar" width="468" height="308" /></h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-74312" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/strange-LEGO-calendar-2-468x357.jpg" alt="strange LEGO calendar 2" width="468" height="357" /></p>
<p>This <a href="http://www.our-new-studios.com/">wall-mounted calendar made entirely of LEGO bricks</a> by UK design studio Vitamins lynches with Google Calendar or iCal to synchronize schedules when users take a picture of the calendar with a smart phone. Software scans the image, notes the location of the various colored squares, and interprets the information.</p>
<h4>LEGO Prosthetic Arm<br />
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-74311" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/strange-LEGO-prosthetic-arm-1-468x339.jpg" alt="strange LEGO prosthetic arm 1" width="468" height="339" /></h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-74310" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/strange-LEGO-prosthetic-arm-2-468x312.jpg" alt="strange LEGO prosthetic arm 2" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/KR3IiXvzrds?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>This <a href="http://maxshepherd.net/Home_Page.html">fully-functional prosthetic limb </a>by student Max Shepherd is made entirely from LEGO and can replicate a full range of human movements including an extending elbow, flexing movements in the wrist, rotation of the thumb and opening and closing of the fingers. The prosthetic is mounted to a &#8216;skeletal&#8217; base containing all of the wires needed to power it, so we don&#8217;t get to actually see it in action on a real live person, but it&#8217;s a pretty interesting concept.</p>
