<p>There are places in the world where a single road, wall or an even thinner, more invisible line separates rich from poor, and those are the kinds of intersections captured by photographer Johnny Miller.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116062" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/dividing-line-644x377.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="377" /></p>
<p>A student of anthropology, Miller started out using images to illustrate wealth disparities in South Africa, but has since gone on to photograph in India, Tanzania and even the United States. He spends much of his time scouring for locations, then charts a path to fly his photography drone.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116059" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/wealth-inequlaity-644x362.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p>“The images that I find the most powerful are when the camera is looking straight down—what’s known as ‘nadir view,&#8217; looking at the actual borders between rich and poor,” he says of <a href="https://www.facebook.com/unequalscenes"><em>Unequal Scenes</em></a>.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116060" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/division-rich-poor-644x362.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p>“Sometimes this is a fence, sometimes a road, or wetlands—with small shacks or poor houses on one side, and larger houses or mansions on the other.&#8221; At times, it&#8217;s the quality of the architecture, or its relative state of disuse, that defines these boundaries.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116061" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/black-and-white-644x362.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p>&#8220;Whatever it is about the composition of those photographs, they are extremely powerful to people. I think the images make inequality relevant—people can see themselves reflected in the images, and it’s deeply unsettling.&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116056" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/new-old-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>His goal is to raise awareness, in part by publishing and displaying his pictures around the world. “Through these conversations we can begin to understand the scope of the problem, and through that understanding, we can develop solutions.”</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116055" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/lue-glass-644x362.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="362" /></p>

<p>There wasn&#8217;t much room for cold feet in this high-flying marriage ceremony, vows for which were exchanged over a gaping void (complete with BASE-jumping flower girls).</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110707" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/wedding-day-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>Ryan Jenks and Kimberly Weglin were first engaged on a similar space net in the same place, then decided to keep up the tradition with the wedding. The brave pair also invited photographers <a href="http://thehearnes.com/">Abbi and Callen Hearnes</a> to document the event in a series of stunning photographs.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110708" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/parachuters-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>As the ceremony unfolded, friends of the couple performed aerial moves and walked across high lines. Flower girls packed thousands of pedestals into backpacks (alongside parachutes) before jumping off surrounding cliffs.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110706" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/jump-lines-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>Every year, a group of athletes and filmmakers called the Moab Monkeys come to the site to create a huge hand-knitted hammock to hang out in before taking their own brave leaps into the void.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110704" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/slackline-644x430.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110703" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/circle-jump-644x430.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110702" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/in-making-644x430.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="430" /></p>

<p>Their creations involve thousands of feet of colorful cordage, often designed to hope a dozen people or so and extending hundreds of feet over the canyon (with a hole in the middle for those looking to hop off and pop their chute, Brian Mosbaugh of <a title="Moab Monkeys' amazing hand-knitted hammock is suspended above a 400-foot-high canyon void" href="http://slacklinemedia.com/2014/12/03/a-new-era-of-aerial-space-net-adventure-is-born/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Slacklinemedia</a>). Also, be sure to check out more extreme wedding photos from <a href="http://thehearnes.com/#intro">The Hearnes</a> duo, who have shot in a lot of exotic locations.</p>

<p>Made by <a href="http://www.moganji.com/">Mo Ganji</a>, a Berlin tattoo artist, each of these works (if you look closely) starts and ends at a single pair of points, no matter how they appear at first glance.</p>

<p>The zigs and zags required to make this approach work are what signal the viewer to make such a closer inspection in the first place.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-92439 size-wide644" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/one-line-face-644x644.jpg" alt="one line face" width="644" height="644" /></p>

<p>Despite the simplicity and consistency of the method, the results are surprisingly varied, from very geometric shapes of human-made objects to organic curves of human and other natural forms.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-92443 size-wide644" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/one-line-tree-644x644.jpg" alt="one line tree" width="644" height="644" /></p>

<p>In some cases, pointillist patterns are added to add texture, creating leaves, shadows or other details, but kept intentionally non-linear so as not to detract from the primary lone-line drawing. (via <a href="http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2016/05/minimalistic-one-line-tattoos-by-mo-gangi/?src=footer">Colossal</a>)</p>

<p>A huge infrastructure project designed to prevent future Hurricane Sandy-style devastation, the <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2014/05/29/turning-tides-10-mile-park-to-protect-nyc-from-flooding/">Dryline</a> is a perfectly-named solution for a city already sporting a successful <a href="https://weburbanist.com/?s=high+line">High Line</a> and an underground <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2014/12/07/lowline-nyc-worlds-first-underground-park-slated-for-2018/">Low Line</a> currently under construction. In the wake of that devastating super-storm, over 300,000 homes were left damaged or destroyed and nearly 20 billion dollars of destruction was caused in total &#8211; the first section of the Dryline is slated to cost a few hundred million, which in contrast does not seem like so much money.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-77770" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/berm-468x262.gif" alt="berm" width="468" height="262" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-77771" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/coastline-468x260.gif" alt="coastline" width="468" height="260" /></p>
<p>Developed by <a href="http://www.rebuildbydesign.org/teams/big-team/">Bjarke Ingels Group</a> (BIG), the scheme continuous to evolve with each iteration. This latest video illustrates many of the mechanisms of action through easy-to-understand sketches and diagrams. It also features interviews with New Yorkers about their vision for a greener southern tip for Manhattan.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-77774" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/active-468x259.gif" alt="active" width="468" height="259" /></p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://player.vimeo.com/video/117303273' allowfullscreen frameborder='0'></iframe></div></p>
<p>Designed to be deployed incrementally, the grand plan involves many discrete steps, each intended to shore up the lower portion of the city &#8211; the place that takes the brunt of incoming tides. The individual interventions vary, from berms that double as parks to sliding barriers that move into position during unusually high tides. Ultimately,<em> &#8220;the Dryline imagines a landscaped buffer stretching all the way from West 57th Street, looping down to the Battery and back up to East 42nd Street, bestowing Manhattan with a protective green cushion.&#8221;</em></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-77773" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/community-active-space-468x264.gif" alt="community active space" width="468" height="264" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-77772" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/community-bike-space-468x256.gif" alt="community bike space" width="468" height="256" /></p>
<p>At the same time, the design follows classic principles of urban landscape pioneers like Robert Moses and Jane Jacobs, taking this environmental challenge as an opportunity to create more park and civic space. Per <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/cities/2015/mar/09/bjarke-ingels-new-york-dryline-park-flood-hurricane-sandy">The Guardian</a>, <em>&#8220;With a sprinkling of fairy-dust, the shoreline becomes furnished with undulating berms and protective planting, flip-down baffles and defensive kiosks, promenades and bike paths, bringing pedestrian life worthy of Lisbon or Barcelona to the gritty banks of Manhattan.&#8221;</em></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-77769" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/dryline-berm-section-468x281.jpeg" alt="dryline berm section" width="468" height="281" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-77767" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/dryline-green-space-fall-468x281.jpeg" alt="dryline green space fall" width="468" height="281" /></p>
<p>BIG is a firm known for thinking large and this project is no exception. Then again, lessons learned from the other ambitious urban projects (like NYC&#8217;s High Line) can be applied here: built it piece by piece to reduce one-time costs and provide room for adjustment, and take citizen input into account. In the end, anyone who has walked the south edge of Manhattan knows it is a disjointed and, in many places, unwelcoming space &#8211; there is a huge opportunity for a new kind of part to provide connectivity and green space from this disparate set of urban landscapes.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-77768" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/dryline-coastal-glass-sections-468x281.jpeg" alt="dryline coastal glass sections" width="468" height="281" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-77778" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/nyc-manhattan-dry-line-468x281.jpg" alt="nyc manhattan dry line" width="468" height="281" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-77775" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/green-park-plan-468x361.jpg" alt="green park plan" width="468" height="361" /></p>
<p><em>&#8220;The Dryline consists of multiple but linked design opportunities; each on different scales of time, size and investment; each local neighborhood tailoring its own set of programs, functions, and opportunities. Small, relatively simple projects maintain the resiliency investment momentum post-Sandy, while setting in motion the longer-term solutions that will be necessary in the future.&#8221;</em></p>

<p>Using fiber optics as &#8220;remote skylights&#8221; to pipe illumination down from the surface, this bold plan aims to transform a century-old trolley station into a bright and green subterranean park. New York City is a natural candidate, having already inspired <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2014/05/27/high-line-west-chicago-la-on-track-for-elevated-greenways/">rail-related</a> and <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2013/09/02/leisure-in-the-sky-13-railway-rooftop-parks/"><em>elevated</em> parks</a> around the world with its innovative <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2013/09/02/leisure-in-the-sky-13-railway-rooftop-parks/">High Line Park</a>.</p>

<p>Located beneath Delancey Street in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, the former Williamsburg Bridge Trolley Terminal is adjacent to active lines but has itself been abandoned for over 50 years. Proposed as the site of the <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2011/09/28/urban-reuse-goes-underground-subterranean-community-park/">Lowline</a>, the space is being vetted for structural feasibility as well as civic support &#8211; discussions with the MTA as well as the city are ongoing and progressing.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-73776" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/lowline-test-area-subterranean-468x309.jpg" alt="lowline test area subterranean" width="468" height="309" /></p>

<p>As shown above and below, the group behind the project is already working with the city on crowd-funded prototypes that demonstrate the technologies to be deployed on the target site, including tests of illumination levels with live greenery.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-73778" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/lowline-surface-generated-solar-468x351.jpg" alt="lowline surface generated solar" width="468" height="351" /></p>

<p>Boasting 20-foot ceilings and multiple blocks of open space, the dilapidated station still has a lot of deserted-place charm including old cobblestones, trail tracks, vaulted ceilings and vintage signage.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-73781" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/lowline-technology-lights-plants-468x280.jpg" alt="lowline technology lights plants" width="468" height="280" /></p>

<p>Much of this will be preserved, rehabilitated and otherwise highlighted in the renovation, creating a balance between new design, urban exploration and historic context. <em>&#8220;To explore our vision in greater detail, we commissioned a preliminary planning study in 2012 with Arup, the global engineering firm, and HR&amp;A Advisors, the leading consultant behind the High Line. The study concluded that the Lowline was not merely technically feasible, but would also vastly improve the local economy and the adjacent transit hub. Once built, the Lowline would be a dynamic cultural space, featuring a diversity of cultural programming, youth activities, and popular retail.&#8221;</em></p>

<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-73785" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/lowline-conceptual-design-phase-468x311.jpg" alt="lowline conceptual design phase" width="468" height="311" /></p>
<p>The ingenious sun-redirecting technology has already been tested, and works as follows: <em>&#8220;Designed by James Ramsey of Raad Studio, the proposed solar technology involves the creation of a “remote skylight.” In this approach, sunlight passes through a glass shield above the parabolic collector, and is reflected and gathered at one focal point, and directed underground. Sunlight is transmitted onto a reflective surface on the distributor dish underground, transmitting that sunlight into the space. This technology would transmit the necessary wavelengths of light to support photosynthesis, enabling plants and trees to grow. During periods of sunlight, electricity would not be necessary to light the space.&#8221;</em></p>
