<p>You barely have to stop on your way down the slope to grab a burger and fries at the <a href="http://www.messynessychic.com/2015/10/15/so-in-sweden-mcdonalds-has-a-ski-thru-restaurant/">McDonalds ski-through window</a>, located on a popular resort in northwest Sweden. The location has been open since the mid-‘90s and can seat 140 people inside, though most seem to choose the grab-and-go option. Why bother taking off your gear when you can just chow down and then hop right back on the lift?</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-88786" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/mcdonalds-ski-through-2-468x288.jpg" alt="mcdonalds ski through 2" width="468" height="288" /></p>

<p>Meanwhile, in the small Swedish town of Pitea, locals get only four hours of sunlight a day in the winter, with temperatures hovering around minus 60 degrees Fahrenheit. That means most residents use snowmobiles to get around, leading to bizarre scenes like the one pictured below.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-88787" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/mcdonalds-ski-through-468x310.jpg" alt="mcdonalds ski-through" width="468" height="310" /></p>
<p>As weird as the McSki McDonalds might be in comparison to the ones in your neighborhood, it doesn’t even break the <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2011/12/25/mcarchitecture-10-sizzlingly-odd-mcdonalds-restaurants/">top 10 most bizarre locations</a> of the fast food chain around the world. In addition to the world’s largest McDonalds, a UFO-shaped location and a brandless, minimalist ‘Quarter Pounder’ experiment in Tokyo, there’s the rotting carcass of a<a href="https://weburbanist.com/2015/07/13/abandoned-mcbarge-floating-fast-food-restaurant-in-ruins/"> ‘McBarge’</a> floating in an inlet in Canada.</p>

<p>Solving a series of long-standing issues associated with taking out the typical fast food trifecta, this clever carrying case is a useful alternative to Happy Meal boxes, bags and cupholders that work better for cars than people traveling on foot or by bike.</p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/IUFshL9niko?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>The solution is more subtle than it might first appear &#8211; yes, it solves the timeless question of how to hold a drink as well as a meal, but it also separates out the warm foods (french fries and hamburger above) from the cool drink (soda or shake suspended below), then unfolds into a ready-to-eat spread. Thin cardboard makes the entire container easy to collapse as well.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82641" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/im-lovin-it-468x332.jpg" alt="im lovin it" width="468" height="332" /></p>
<p>Customers can hold the package in their hand or slip it over the handlebars and continue cycling unencumbered. Targeted initially toward markets in two bicycle-friendly cities (Copenhagen, Denmark and Medellin, Colombia), the company is also looking to give these a go in Amsterdam, Holland and Tokyo, Japan.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82634" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/mcbike-drive-through-468x312.jpg" alt="mcbike drive through" width="468" height="312" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-82636" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/mcbike-system-468x264.jpg" alt="mcbike system" width="468" height="264" /></p>
<p>For now, it is a trial redesign that is as much about marketing toward young urban bikers, but if the packaging is sound there seems to be no obvious reason for McDonalds not to ultimately deploy these around the world (and for other fast food chains to follow suit).</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81830" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/abandoned-mcdonalds-1-468x234.jpg" alt="abandoned mcdonalds 1" width="468" height="234" /></p>
<p>Built in 1986 in the hopes of enticing diners who were gravitating toward more high-end fare, this now-abandoned floating McDonalds might just be the saddest-looking <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2013/12/15/past-food-10-creepy-closed-abandoned-mcdonalds/">fast food ruin</a> around. Known as the ‘McBarge,’ it’s been anchored in Burrad Inlet near Vancouver, Canada since its debut and served its last Big Mac in 1991.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81833" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/abandoned-mcdonalds-4-468x227.jpg" alt="abandoned mcdonalds 4" width="468" height="227" /></p>
<p>The idea was to show off the future of technology and architecture while also attempting to regain some of the market share it lost during an ‘80s trend toward bistros and boutiques.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81832" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Abandoned-Mcdonalds-3-468x268.jpg" alt="Abandoned Mcdonalds 3" width="468" height="268" /></p>
<p>How, exactly, McDonald’s aimed to do that with a clunky-looking barge serving the same old menu is unclear. The chain dropped $12 million on the floating fast food joint and four other locations built just for Expo ’86 in Vancouver, thinking they could simply move the barge elsewhere if it didn’t catch on.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-81831" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Abandoned-Mcdonalds-2-468x351.jpg" alt="Abandoned Mcdonalds 2" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p>For whatever reason, it was never reopened, and hasn’t budged from its apparently permanent spot in the inlet. Owner Howard Meaking proposed renovating it into the showpiece of a new waterfront development along the Fraser River in 2009, but the city council still hasn’t approved the idea.</p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/TfgTD53EHRw?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>A group called ‘Vancouver’s Worst Ghost Hunters’ took a tour of the abandoned barge, using a legal loophole to get aboard and filming the experience. Check out the (surprisingly vermin-free) interior in the video <em>(Images via <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McBarge">Wikimedia Commons</a>, <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/18789396@N00/2562073498">Ashley Fisher/Flickr Creative Commons</a>).</em></p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-62627" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/McDonalds_main.jpg" alt="abandoned closed McDonald's" width="468" height="360" /><br />
I&#8217;m leavin&#8217; it! You can bet your sesame seed buns these 10 closed and abandoned <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2011/12/25/mcarchitecture-10-sizzlingly-odd-mcdonalds-restaurants/" target="_blank">McDonald&#8217;s</a> have swirled their last <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2013/06/23/swirl-world-9-cool-mcflurry-flavors-you-cant-get-here/" target="_blank">McFlurry</a> and will bag burgers no more.</p>
<p><span id="more-62603"></span></p>
<h4>Archless In America</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-62604" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/McDonalds_1.jpg" alt="abandoned McDonald's " width="468" height="673" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(image via: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/flaviograna/6302486404/">Flavio Grana</a>)</span></p>
<p>The usual knock against modern architecture (or should we say, &#8220;ARCH-itecture&#8221;) is that it lacks character, and the stereotypical mansard-roofed &#8220;McStore&#8221; style of McDonald&#8217;s outlets is the poster child for the genre. With that said, Flickr user <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/flaviograna/" target="_blank">Flavio Grana</a> has managed to coax a supersized amount of depth out of the anonymous abandoned McDonald&#8217;s location above. Stripped of all brand identity yet instantly recognizable, the moonlit McD&#8217;s stands alone in silent glory, a washed-out monument to conspicuous consumer culture.</p>
<h4>Sweet &amp; Sour Saucer</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-62606" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/McDonalds_2a.jpg" alt="Megatron McDonald's Alconbury" width="468" height="1010" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/1g0fl0/this_subway_in_new_jersey_has_a_red_sign_instead/">Reddit</a>, <a href="http://comfortabledisorientation.typepad.com/my_weblog/2007/05/the_megatron_1.html">Comfortable Disorientation</a> and <a href="http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/246660">Geograph UK</a>)</span>)</p>
<p>If you thought the UFO-shaped <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/demonbaby/2335812109/" target="_blank">McDonald&#8217;s in Roswell</a>, NM was out of this world, then feast your eyes on the former McDonald&#8217;s restaurant in Alconbury, UK. First opened in 1990 as <a href="http://comfortabledisorientation.typepad.com/my_weblog/2007/05/the_megatron_1.html" target="_blank">The Megatron</a>, the distinctive saucer-shaped eatery was an interplanetary flop: in 1993 it closed but soon re-opened under the McDonald&#8217;s banner.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-62608" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/McDonalds_2b.jpg" alt="McDonald's Megatron Alconbury" width="468" height="1140" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/35382790@N00/1387896202/in/photolist-37DkbS">Daz</a>, <a href="http://comfortabledisorientation.typepad.com/my_weblog/2007/05/the_megatron_1.html">Comfortable Disorientation</a> and <a href="http://www.huntspost.co.uk/news/business/flying_saucer_site_could_become_travellers_pitches_1_1409018">HuntsPost24/Geoff Soden</a>)</span></p>
<p>After roughly 15 years serving up burgers, fries &amp; shakes to hungry Huntingdonshire locals, the location shut down for good and (oddly for a closed McDonald&#8217;s franchise) remained shuttered for a further half-decade before finally being <a href="http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/News/Space-theme-restaurant-bites-the-dust.htm" target="_blank">demolished</a> in mid-2008. Plans are now afoot to allow six &#8220;gypsy pitches&#8221; to occupy the land where the McUFO once stood. Tramps and thieves are advised to look elsewhere.</p>
<h4>Arch-Criminal?</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-62609" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/McDonalds_3.jpg" alt="abandoned McDonald's golden arches sign" width="468" height="704" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(image via: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/99244087@N00/4435212407">rustyjaw</a>)</span></p>
<p>It&#8217;s not often an item (with emphasis on the &#8220;em&#8221;) this large and obtrusive escapes the watchful eyes of the McBrand Police but it seems to have happened here. Flickr user <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/tendril/sets/72157623554245300/" target="_blank">rustyjaw</a> doesn&#8217;t explain what the Big M is doing inside an abandoned naval communications station or what plans (if any) he has for this piece of fast food M-orabilia, and that&#8217;s probably in his own best interest. Imagine refurbishing and re-electrifying the signage, then mounting it on your dining room wall&#8230; awesome to be sure, though it would definitely ruin the mood during intimate gourmet dinners.</p>
<h4>Supersize My Storm</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-62628" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/McDonalds_4.jpg" alt="abandoned McDonald's Biloxi clown" width="468" height="885" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://imgur.com/r/creepy/1RgbS">Imgur/1RgbS</a> and <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/82337243@N00/87575587">Joel Carranza</a>)</span>)</p>
<p>If Ronald McDonald wasn&#8217;t creepy enough already, check out his <a href="http://www.reddit.com/r/creepy/comments/12oivq/abandoned_mcdonalds_after_katrina/" target="_blank">zombie clown</a> alter-ego, still (barely) standing in Biloxi, MS, shortly after Hurricane Katrina devastated the area in September 2005. It took a while for reconstruction to get into full swing around Biloxi and the neighboring gulf coast but it was too late for both this shattered &amp; shuttered McDonald&#8217;s and the tilted Ronald &#8211; they&#8217;ve been replaced by a Wendy&#8217;s.</p>

<a href="https://weburbanist.com/2011/12/25/mcarchitecture-10-sizzlingly-odd-mcdonalds-restaurants/" target="_blank">McDonald&#8217;s</a> McFlurry is the coolest thing on the menu but not all McMenus are created equal. Take these 9 cool <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2013/05/19/scooped-12-chilled-out-abandoned-ice-cream-stands/" target="_blank">McFlurry</a> flavors&#8230; oops, our bad, you can&#8217;t!</p>

<h4>Durian Crunch McFlurry – Singapore</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-52302" alt="McDonald's Durian Crunch McFlurry Singapore" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/mcflurry_1a.jpg" width="468" height="605" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(image via: <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=551667998213111&amp;set=a.161567683889813.28585.157162220997026&amp;type=1">Facebook/McDonald&#8217;s Singapore Page</a>)</span></p>
<p>McDonald&#8217;s is a proven master at thinking global while acting local and if you don&#8217;t believe that, feast your eyes (and nose) on the <a href="http://kavielteo.blogspot.ca/2013/06/mcdonalds-new-durian-crunch-mcflurry.html" target="_blank">Durian Crunch McFlurry</a>. This limited edition, Singapore-only dessert treat takes vanilla soft-serve ice cream blended with durian syrup, adds a crunchy topping, and is served in a squared off frosted plastic container.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-52303" alt="McDonald's Durian Crunch McFlurry Singapore" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/mcflurry_1b.jpg" width="468" height="700" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://kavielteo.blogspot.sg/2013/06/mcdonalds-new-durian-crunch-mcflurry.html">KavielTeo</a>, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/47399458@N06/">Annagunn</a> and <a href="http://www.garshol.priv.no/blog/242.html">Larsblog</a>)</span></p>
<p>You&#8217;ll pay $2.80 SG (about $2.24 US) for each helping dished out from any of the innumerable McDonald&#8217;s Dessert Kiosk outlets scattered all across the city. That is, of course, if you love durian&#8230; there&#8217;s no middle ground when it comes to the “(stin)king of fruits.” Try bringing your <a href="http://www.brandeating.com/2013/06/news-mcdonalds-singapore-new-durian-mcflurry.html" target="_blank">Durian Crunch McFlurry</a> into certain hotels or onto Singapore Mass Rapid Transit trains? That just might cost you a caning.</p>
<h4>Bubblegum Squash McFlurry – Australia &amp; New Zealand</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-52304" alt="McDonald's Bubblegum Squash McFlurry Australia" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/mcflurry_2.jpg" width="468" height="805" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://www.brandeating.com/2012/04/whats-on-menu-mcdonalds-australia-2012.html">Brand Eating</a> and <a href="http://pretty-random.com/true-to-my-name-heres-a-random-update">Pretty Random</a>)</span></p>
<p>Sweet-toothed fast-foodies fear not, the <a href="http://mcdonalds.co.nz/our-food/menu/#/desserts/mcflurry-bubblegum-squash" target="_blank">Bubblegum Squash McFlurry</a> does NOT contain squash in any way, shape or form so Aussie &amp; Kiwi parents can forget about sneaking some veggies into their children&#8217;s diets. In fact, the word &#8220;diet&#8221; should not be allowed anywhere near this pink, white &amp; blue confection concoction made from bubblegum flavored syrup and marshmallows mixed into vanilla soft-serve ice cream.</p>
<h4>Cadbury Creme Egg McFlurry – Canada, UK &amp; Ireland</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-52305" alt="Cadbury Creme Egg McFlurry" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/mcflurry_3a.jpg" width="468" height="715" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(images via: <a href="http://www.coloribus.com/adsarchive/tv-commercials/creme-egg-mcflurry-caravan-5052005/">Coloribus</a> and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/McDonaldsIreland">Facebook/McDonald&#8217;s Ireland</a>)</span></p>
<p>You might think the McFlurry is as all-American as Mom&#8217;s apple pie but it actually <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mcflurry#Desserts" target="_blank">originated</a> in Canada: a McDonald&#8217;s franchise store in Bathurst, New-Brunswick first introduced the spoon-blended dessert in 1997. Canada continues to refine a distinct McFlurry identity with the Cadbury Creme Egg McFlurry. Coinciding with the appearance of its main flavoring feature, the Cadbury Creme Egg, the Cadbury Creme Egg McFlurry is usually available in most Canadian, British and Irish McDonald&#8217;s stores during the annual run-up to Easter.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-52306" alt="Cadbury Creme Egg McFlurry London UK" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/mcflurry_3b.jpg" width="468" height="750" /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(image via: <a href="http://out-is-through.blogspot.ca/2010/05/i-found-creme-egg-mcflurry.html">Out Is Through</a>)</span></p>
<p>Not all stores in all regions add the Cadbury Creme Egg McFlurry to their menus, which can be frustrating to devotees of the sickly sweet chocolate-shelled fondant orbs in all their various permutations. How does one know they&#8217;re such a devotee? Taking selfies with your long-sought sweet treat in foreign locales like London (England or Ontario) is a pretty good indication.</p>
