Few avid readers can display their collections quite so publicly and loudly as Dutch street artists Jan Is De Man and Deef Feed, who painted this bookcase across one entire of a three-story brick apartment in Utrecht.

Included on their faux shelves are some favorite actual volumes but also some fantasy editions naming themselves or other fictional figures as authors along illustrated book spines.

Windows and doors are cleverly integrated into the design, many of which are framed in upright books while other novels are left to tilt and stack in various ways, much like they would in a real-life case.

Inevitably, this was not the first attempt of its kind — other notable examples include a Kansas City Library, the parking lot of which is effectively fenced off by a giant-sized collection of classic editions.

Folding and flexible geometric forms seem to weave in and out of the structures graced with murals by David Louf (known as Mr. June), seeming to imply what a blank facade could have been in the past or become in some imagined future.

Louf toys with a combination of reality and abstraction. Depending on the piece, he sometimes hints at hidden doors, windows and interior spaces. In other cases, his work appears to deconstruct spacetime itself through layered voids.

His murals have been painted everywhere from Miami and Denver to Aruba, China and Berlin, Germany, each a collaboration with his graphic design studio and an exploration of architectural speculation, like science fiction in art form.

Each piece is naturally site-specific, drawing on the materials and structure of the setting, playing up existing features while imagining new details, many of which warp reality around them. See videos of his works in progress above.

Originally painted in 1968 on the side of an Amsterdam museum building, this Keith Haring mural was covered in a subsequent renovation before recently being revealed once again to the public.

Standing 40 feet high, the drawing was added to complement an indoor exhibit at the Stedelijk Museum. A new layer to the exterior facade, however, later shrouded it from view for decades to follow.

For years, other artists like Mick La Rock have been pushing to expose the art once again. Finally, a move by the museum itself out of the building made that possible — the climate-controlling panels were no longer needed. In the end, the conversion of the structure to a grocery store from a museum enabled this reveal.

The original work is Haring’s largest in Europe. Created over a period of two days, it features a mythical creature and figures common to the artist’s work. More about the artist: “Keith Haring was born on May 4, 1958 in Reading, Pennsylvania, and was raised in nearby Kutztown, Pennsylvania. He developed a love for drawing at a very early age, learning basic cartooning skills from his father and from the popular culture around him, such as Dr. Seuss and Walt Disney.”

“In addition to being impressed by the innovation and energy of his contemporaries, Haring was also inspired by the work of Jean Dubuffet, Pierre Alechinsky, William Burroughs, Brion Gysin and Robert Henri’s manifesto The Art Spirit, which asserted the fundamental independence of the artist. With these influences Haring was able to push his own youthful impulses toward a singular kind of graphic expression based on the primacy of the line.”

The works are designed to be figured out, but also use positive and negative space in creative ways, unfolding like a visual puzzle. In a way, this is both typical of tags, which can be hard to make out, but also a break from tradition in that they are crisp, clear and made to be understood.

By writing in a more comprehensible way, Pref aims to make his work more accessible to the public, opening up a wider audience to the appreciation of type-based graffiti art in shared spaces.

Originally from London and based in Cape Town, South Africa, artist Jake Aikman enjoys working on extreme and dramatic landscapes, from dark blue oceans to dark green forests and distant lonely mountains.

The focus in most of his pieces is not so much the scene but the setting — especially at larger scales and absent figures, as in this piece, they create a tone or mood rather than telling a particular story. In short: they leave a lot to the imagination, like a blank canvass providing a time and place but no characters.

This particular piece is one of his largest to date and was produced for Art United Us. Spanning the entire side of a structure, it was completed in just over a week.
