The grim reaper lurks, one man steps on another’s head, crowds cling precariously to window ledges and the people begin to revolt in a series of hacked Euro bank notes by artist Stefanos. The simple images, inked onto the currency, make a statement on the current social and economic stability in the artist’s home country of Greece.

“Observing the Euro banknote landscapes one notices a lack of any reality, whatsoever for the last five years the crumbling Greek economy has hatched violence and social decay – so, I decided to fuse these two things. Through hacking the banknotes I’m using a European a document [sic], that is in cross-border circulation, including Greece – thus, the medium allows me to ‘bomb’ public property from the comfort of my home. In working with currency in my job as a customer service agent at Danish lender Sambla, I’ve come to see the everyday impact that banknotes and money in general can have on society. It’s why I work in the financial services industry and why I bring my experiences in my day to day call center job into my artwork.”

The drawings make use of the existing imagery on the currency, including recognizable ancient Greek monuments, ornate Gothic windows, modern architecture and aqueducts. Just the slightest marking on a bill can completely change one’s perception of the printed imagery.

On September 19th, 2014, residents of cities around the world rushed into the streets to reclaim what is rightfully theirs, taking urban spaces back for their own enjoyment. Well, sort of. Park(ing) Day is an annual event that encourages temporarily converting public parking spaces into parks, playgrounds, venues and other recreational spaces, and it’s usually officially sanctioned by the cities in which it’s held. Here’s how a dozen cities around the world celebrated, from Quito, Ecuador to Dublin, Ireland. Based on 2011 data (a year in which 975 parks were created in 162 cities), and projected growth it is estimated that over 1,500 parklets were produced for this year’s event.

Sydney, Australia

Paris, France

In the cities of Paris and Nancy, France, Park(ing) Day participants played video games in makeshift living rooms, displayed their art, and created iconic Parisian cafes (in the street rather than the sidewalk.)

Dublin, Ireland

Literal garden beds, gay pride displays and a beautiful turf-covered sculptural bench made appearances in Dublin.

Montreal, Canada

Parking Day 2014 Citizens Reclaim The Streets For Fun

How do you make a politician’s latest speech interesting enough to grab the attention of a visually-oriented generation raised on comic books? Make it into Manga. Japanese website ‘Manga No Shimbun‘ presents the day’s current events in comic strip format – from the release of the new iPhone to the story of that smoking Sumatran toddler.

Editor Son Yang collects information about the day’s biggest news stories from TV, the internet and his own sources and distributes it to a team of in-house and contract artists, who spend an average of eight hours on each 2-page news piece.

“We think that reporting the daily news in a manga format will make it much easier to understand current topics and will help attract attention to the news from people in broader walks of life,” said Yang in a press release.

It might seem a bit touchy to portray serious or tragic events in Manga style – like the earthquake in Haiti or human rights issues in North Korea – but Manga No Shimbun isn’t trying to editorialize the news, making it humorous or satirical. They’re just breaking it down into engaging, easy-to-understand works of art. Next up? Versions in Korean, French, and – yes – English.
