<p>A series of stacked tree-like supports seem to abstract the nature in this Japanese chapel, bringing a small geometric forest inside this otherwise minimalist space to serve a contemporary congregation.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110229" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/chapel-forest-design-644x439.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="439" /></p>
<p>Designed by architects of Momoeda Yo, the square pillars were made using traditional Japanese woodworking methods. They stack on top of each other, forming different forest layers and growing smaller as they go up &#8212; a fractal-style repeating pattern.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110228" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/japanese-chapel-forest-trees-644x433.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="433" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110227" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/japanese-beams-644x416.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="416" /></p>
<p>The construction strategy not only supports a ceiling high above, but it also opens up more space for occupation down below. A series of thin, white-painted metal rods are used for structural stabilization (tension) while the wooden members work to hold things up (compression).</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110223" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/plan-via-644x525.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="525" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110222" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/section-view-644x428.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="428" /></p>
<p>The side loads are carried by walls while the columns support roof loads of up to 25 tons. The whole architectural creation reads a bit like a structural drawing exercise, in which loads trace are downward and become larger as they join up and head toward the floor, much like the columns do in this case.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110225" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/japan-columns-trees-644x990.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="990" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110226" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/japan-church-night-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-110224" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/outside-view-644x431.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="431" /></p>
<p>The designer says they were inspired in part by a combination of historic church styles and local traditions: &#8220;In nagasaki, there is the oldest wooden gothic chapel in japan known as ‘ohura-tenshudou’,’ he says ‘This chapel is not only a famous tourist point, but a place loved and cared for by the townsfolk. We tried to design the building as a new gothic style chapel, by using Japanese wooden system.&#8221;</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-94740" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/open-air-hotel-644x460.jpg" alt="open air hotel" width="644" height="460" /></p>
<p>Above and beyond your typical five-star hotel, this open-air room sits at nearly 6,500 feet in the mountains of Switzerland with panoramic views of the Alps.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-94738" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/wall-free-bedroom-644x460.jpg" alt="wall free bedroom" width="644" height="460" /></p>
<p>A bed, side tables and lamps are not quite all visitors need to enjoy their stay at <a href="http://www.null-stern-hotel.ch/">Null Stern</a> (translated: Zero Star), but bathrooms are just a few minutes down the slope and meals are delivered by a butler. The name is a little misleading, since in most hotels one would have greatly reduced access to the infinite stars in the night sky.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-94736" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/boutique-mountain-hotel-644x460.jpg" alt="boutique mountain hotel" width="644" height="460" /></p>
<p>At around $250 per night, the space and its amenities are a steal and reservations are refunded in case of inclement weather. The wall-and-ceiling-free room is available in spring and fall but closed during the winter.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-94739" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/wall-free-hotel-644x460.jpg" alt="wall free hotel" width="644" height="460" /></p>
<p>The Null Stern is part art experiment and part boutique hotel, using the sky as a ceiling and mountains as walls.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-94737" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/alps-panoramic-view-644x460.jpg" alt="alps panoramic view" width="644" height="460" /></p>
<p>&#8220;Even though this version is radically different from the first one in the nuclear bunker,&#8221; a previous project by the same creators, &#8220;the essence and the spirit of the concept remains the same,&#8221; said one of the artists behind Null Stern &#8220;To put the guest at the centre of the experience and to focus on the intangible by reducing everything else to the minimum.&#8221;</p>

<p>Designed to dispel fears surrounding Muslim culture, practices and traditions, a new wide-open skyscraper design for New York City invites people of all faiths to enter, through both programmatic functions and a clear facade.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-89910" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/islamic-center-facade-glass-468x232.jpg" alt="islamic center facade glass" width="468" height="232" /></p>
<p>The schematic proposal by local firm <a href="http://burokorayduman.com/">Buro Koray Duman</a> was commissioned by the <a href="http://www.asmasociety.org/">American Society for Muslim Advancement</a> (ASMA), aiming to promote progressive change and social justice. The Society hopes to show another side of Islam to the city and the world.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-89909" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/islamic-center-entry-door-468x242.jpg" alt="islamic center entry door" width="468" height="242" /></p>
<p>The idea is, in part, to highlight cultural aspects of Islam as apart from the strictly religious (and particularly: radicalized) associations, distinguishing between peoples and religions.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-89908" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/islamic-center-design-diagrams-468x366.gif" alt="islamic center design diagrams" width="468" height="366" /></p>
<p>The building is structured to be as welcoming and open as possible, consisting of horizontal floors stacked to fit a vertical urban landscape.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-89906" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/islamic-center-walkways-interior-468x475.gif" alt="islamic center walkways interior" width="468" height="475" /></p>
<p>From <a href="http://www.dezeen.com/2016/03/02/buro-koray-duman-islamic-cultural-centre-new-york-city-glass-tower/">Dezeen</a>: &#8220;His studio&#8217;s schematic design for the centre features a 100,000-square-foot (9,290 square metres) building that takes its cue from historic Islamic cultural complexes, called kulliyes.&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-89904" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/islamic-center-vertical-stacks-468x288.gif" alt="islamic center vertical stacks" width="468" height="288" /></p>
<p>&#8220;In these complexes, which are laid out horizontally, low-slung buildings with varying functions are organised around a centrally placed mosque.&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-89905" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/islamic-center-central-volume-468x390.gif" alt="islamic center central volume" width="468" height="390" /></p>
<p>A central volume contains an auditorium, library, prayer room, restaurant and offices, connected by walkways that span public and private spaces around the perimeter.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-89907" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/islamic-center-vertical-wrap-468x459.gif" alt="islamic center vertical wrap" width="468" height="459" /></p>
<p>This design may or may not be realized; the idea of building Islam-centered architecture near the site of the 9/11 attacks has been contentious for well over a decade.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-89911" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/islamic-center-nyc-468x468.jpg" alt="islamic center nyc" width="468" height="468" /></p>
<p>Supporters hope, however, that structure (conceptual or actual) can show another dimension to even the wariest members of the public, at least opening the door to interfaith and intercultural dialogue.</p>

<p>Sports stadiums can be contentious, particularly when located in the heart of a city, but this design works in various ways to reduce disruptions to urban fabric, slotting seamlessly into its surrounding context.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-76360" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/urban-fabric-stadium-design-468x311.jpg" alt="urban fabric stadium design" width="468" height="311" /></p>
<p>Designed by international architecture and engineering firm Arup, the AC Milan 48,000-seat soccer club stadium in Italy is wrapped in commercial (shops, bars, hotels and restaurants) programmatic elements that work with but also independently of sporting events. Additional public-purpose elements include rooftop decks, micro-parks and playground for children.</p>
<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/mVQ5SeiABqU?rel=0' frameborder='0' webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe></div></p>
<p>Reinforced with soundproofing and a plan to sink its base into the ground, adding these architectural buffers on all sides helps reduce noise pollution for blocks on all sides as well as providing street-level continuity for those walking and driving through the city. <a href="http://www.fastcodesign.com/3042051/ac-milan-has-plans-for-48000-person-stadium-you-might-not-even-notice#4">Mark Wilson</a> compares it to a combination of historical fortifications and suburban shopping centers: <em>&#8220;around the stadium’s heart, architects will build a castle-like perimeter of restaurants, a hotel, and a sports college. From the street, the stadium just looks like a block-wide mall.&#8221;</em></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-76359" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/stadium-interior-space-design-468x273.jpg" alt="stadium interior space design" width="468" height="273" /></p>
<p>The stadium itself features a spectator-optimized design intended to provide the best view possible for all visitors as well as a removable roof to allow for play in various conditions.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-76358" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/stadium-side-view-468x275.jpg" alt="stadium side view" width="468" height="275" /></p>
<p>There are many structures that arguably should stand out from their surroundings &#8211; civic buildings like city halls, for instance &#8211; but sports stadiums rarely look good in and of themselves, and far too frequently interrupt what is going on in the cities around them. Typically, <em>&#8220;even the most beautifully designed stadiums are an eyesore. They’re sprawling moles protruding from the skin of an urban environment, distended to accommodate a wide footprint of seats low to the ground.&#8221;</em></p>

<p>Rendering luxury-class house designs accessible to the public is just part of the beauty of <a href="http://www.paperhouses.co/">Paperhouses</a>, an endeavor to raise the quality of free house plans and and explore the potentials for architecture to be as open as technology can be. As with <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2012/09/20/wikihouse-open-source-diy-architecture-you-can-build/">Wikihouse</a>, anyone is welcome to download and begin construction on any of the uploaded homes without paying an architect fee.</p>

<p>The latest submission to Paperhouses is a houseboat by <a href="http://www.ct-architects.co.uk/">Carl Turner Architects</a> composed of prefab parts and design to move freely in narrow urban waterways and allow for expansion in ever-more-crowded European capitals.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75565" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/open-source-modular-house-468x323.jpg" alt="open source modular house" width="468" height="323" /></p>
<p>As with other homes in the database, this one is intended to be flexible, able to be adapted to different conditions and clients. While intended to float, the modular construction allows the design to be built on land with equal ease while an adjustable pallet of colors and materials allow it to be individualized by each builder or owner.</p>

<p>Our Private Sky by Florian Busch Architects is part of the same initiative but approaches modularity through the idea of privacy and views. The primary focus of the structure is upward, while variable windows can be added, moved or removed depending upon its context.</p>

<p>The Module House by Tatiana Bilbao is based on series of same-sized blocks that can be arranged and oriented depending on the layout of a site and desired directions relative to the sun, featuring concrete walls and cantilevers to balance daylight and shade.</p>
