The casting call is coming from inside the house, and these real-life horror movie houses achieved infamy as on-location sets for some memorable film shoots.

Amityville Horror House

The so-called Amityville Horror House can be found at 108 (formerly 112) Ocean Avenue in Amityville, NY. Producers of the 1979 film sought permission to shoot on location at the actual house where Ronald DeFeo Jr shot and killed 6 members of his family in 1974, but were denied. Instead, a house in Toms River, NJ was altered to resemble the three-story Dutch Colonial home, right down to the distinctive “pumpkin eyes” attic windows. Ironically, the house on Ocean Avenue itself has been altered and no longer sports the quarter-round windows. (images via austinpomer and Encouraging Quotes)

Poltergeist House

This house at 4267 Roxbury St. in Simi Valley, CA is where the 1982 horror film Poltergeist was filmed. Unlike the movie home, this house did NOT implode into some sort of supernatural black hole. The photo above was taken 35 years after filming completed and not a whole lot has changed other than the extensive brickwork in the front yard. Silence of the Lambs House

Also known as Buffalo Bill’s house, this rambling three-story Victorian home in the Village of Layton, Fayette County, PA featured prominently in the 1991 shock horror thriller The Silence of the Lambs. The home was put on the market by its owners in 2016 but, to quote Trib Live, the sale was going “torturously slowly”. Not for the obvious reason, mind you, but likely due to the 4-bedroom house only having one bathroom. Now THAT’s what we call horrible! (image via Paul McCarthy)

Surreal Estate 7 Real Life Horror Movie Houses

Over 1,000 feet above the streets of Bangkok, thrill-seeking tourists creep out onto the glass floor of an observation deck at the top of a futuristic-looking tower. The new observatory is the crown jewel of the MahaNakhon building by Buro Ole Scheeren, a residential skyscraper adjacent to Chongnonsi Sky Train Station. Dubbed the “Skytray,” the sheet of glass cantilevers from the top of the building and measures about 15 by 57 feet.

The deck, which just opened to the public, offers 360-degree views of the cityscape and the Chao Phraya River. As with any skyscraper observation deck, it’s not for the faint of heart, and the glass makes it extra heart-pounding – especially since the MahaNakhon is Thailand’s tallest building.

The tower itself is a striking addition to Bangkok with a pixelated appearance generated by “a geometric erosion” consisting of balconies, terraces and floating rooms that emerge or recede from the tower’s glassy facade. The architects wanted to blur the boundaries between the tower and the city outside so residents almost feel like they could walk right out into the air. In addition to 200 private apartments, the tower houses retail space, cafes, restaurants, terraces and a boutique 150-room hotel.

“The 77-storey complex embodies a radical manifestation of the potential of the skyscraper to invigorate its urban context,” say the architects. “The design dismantles the traditional formula of an inert and hermetic totem by opening up the tower to reveal the scale of human inhabitation inside the building. Characterized by its distinctive sculptural profile and the three-dimensional pixelated ribbon that coils around its full height, the building unveils its inner life and projects the image of human activity to the surrounding city and beyond.”

Santa Claus is coming to town… consider yourself warned! These creepy Santa statues hail not from the North Pole but somewhere much, MUCH further south.

Talk about Lost in Translation… this huge inflatable statue erected outside a shopping mall in Taiyuan, China, is a bizarre mashup of Old Saint Nick, Marilyn Monroe from The Seven Year Itch, and Eartha Kitt singing Santa Baby. Why would you do that, China? Even worse, this weird interpretation of Santa Claus seems to be the norm over in the Middle Kingdom – we showcased a similar bizarre blow-up blown-up-skirted Santa from Dongguan in our 2016 look at creepy Santa statues.

Crepes You Out

Umm, yeah, suddenly we’ve lost our appetite and this creepy crepe-y Santa is to blame. Flickr member Bronwen (bellybutton girl) captured this not-so-jolly Man with All the Toys in all his glowering glory last year at Birmingham, UK’s annual Christmas Market. Wonder who’s crepe-ing down your chimney this year…

He Seize You…

The reindeer appear to have left poor Santa stranded… wouldn’t you? This spooky Santa sports bugged-out eyes, flaring nostrils and an oversized mitten-clad hand reaching out to grab you by the throat. Wow, you must have been REALLY naughty this year and Santa knows it. I’m Melting, I’m Melting!

Santa Claus delivers toys to girls and boys all over the world but he doesn’t stay too long in one place, especially hot, humid, tropical locales like Guatemala… and now you know why. Seems like Father Christmas has more in common with Frosty the Snowman than anyone thought. Satan Claus 10 More Scary Creepy Santa Statues

Whether you’re haunted by a fear of ghosts, gripped by night terrors involving oversized insects, or find horror in more realistically pressing matters like nuclear meltdowns and the looming environmental apocalypse, there’s something to be scared about among these extraordinarily creepy art installations.

Monster House by Christine McConnell

Artist, photographer and baker Christine McConnell, who’s well known on Instagram for her creepy culinary creations, decided to transform her parents’ house for Halloween sing materials like foam core insulation boards, lighting and a fog machine. The result, ‘Monster House,’ is pretty incredible.

Chiharu Shiota’s Tangled Webs

Japanese-born, Berlin-based installation artist Chiharu Shiota stretches her web-like creations throughout gallery interiors and other structures, almost like a spider herself. The threads or hoses are woven into abstract networks and attached to objects in the room, like pianos and boats. In 2013, she completed a performance piece entitled ‘Earth and Blood’ reflecting a traumatic personal history of cancer and loss.

Horror Vacui by David Zink Yi

A giant squid seems to have been unearthed fro the sea and left on a gallery floor to decompose in a puddle of putrid black liquid. This installation by David Zink Yi, entitled ‘Horror Vacui,’ is made of ceramic coated with copper and lead, the liquid consisting of ink and corn syrup.

Giant Ant Infestations by Rafael Gómezbarros

If you’re creeped out by insect swarms, you might not want to see any of Rafael Gómezbarros’ incredible oversized ant installations in person. Each one measures 20 inches in length. In an interview with Art Media Agency, Gómezbarros explained, “Through the portrayal of this creature which generates so many positive processes in nature, I aim to create a reflection upon the reality in which we live, which is repeated throughout world history: the displacement of humanity and the resulting immigration, especially in the current era of globalisation.  For me, immigration is often the result of the internal problems within a country. The immigrant can be represented by the ant, which in turn embodies duality: positive energy that leads it to construct and create elsewhere is juxtaposed by the notion of infestation.”

Ghosts in a Czech Church by Jakub Hadrava

After part of the roof of St. George’s church in the Czech village of Lukova collapsed in the middle of a funeral service in 1968, locals believed the structure to be cursed, and left it to rot. Whether or not any real ghosts ever haunted its pews, it’s now filled with seriously spooky specters in the form of sculptural installations by local artist Jakub Hadrava.

Creepy Art Installations

A nightmarishly oversized spider emerges from a gaping hole in a wall in this anamorphic optical illusion mural by French street artist Denys Pasco, better known as Densoner. Known for his highly detailed graffiti style as well as oversized murals frequently featuring creatures of the wild, Densoner created a creepy effect with the massive arachnid’s legs stretching out toward the viewer.

The process of creating ‘Eat Me’ is captured on video and sped up so you can watch the spider come alive in the hands of the artist. Denoner starts off by painting a photorealistic black hole on a tattered urban wall, with the edges painted in shadow to make it appear 3D.

Then, with a few strokes of white, the spider begins to appear, becoming more and more threatening as the artist works. Watch the video all the way to the end for a fun surprise.
