    <p><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-120460" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/arnes-motel-1a-644x363.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="363" /></p>
<p>The closed and abandoned Arne&#8217;s Royal Hawaiian Motel was a <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2017/01/08/out-of-limits-15-retro-futuristic-soviet-town-welcome-signs/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">welcome</a> oasis for overheated <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2015/02/22/checked-out-ten-permanently-vacant-abandoned-motels/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">travelers</a> passing through the Gateway to Death Valley in Baker, CA.</p>
<h4>Hold the Pineapple</h4>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-120461" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/arnes-motel-1b-644x430.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p>Arne&#8217;s Royal Hawaiian Motel opened in 1957, at the height of the post-war <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2012/06/17/soused-pacific-15-terrific-ceramic-vintage-tiki-mugs/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">South Seas boom</a>. The motel is located in the tiny town of Baker (pop. 835), conveniently close to the intersection of I-15 and State Route 127 (Death Valley Road).</p>
<h4>Reasonable Bates er, Rates</h4>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-120462" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/arnes-motel-2-644x530.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="530" /></p>
<p>At roughly the halfway point between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, the 43-room motel hoped to lure road-going travelers in need of an overnight sleep stop. As well, tourists visiting infamously hot &amp; dry Death Valley just to the north no doubt appreciated a dip in the motel&#8217;s refreshingly cool, guests-only, outdoor swimming pool.</p>
<h4>Baking In Baker</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-120463" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/arnes-motel-3-644x271.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="271" /></p>
<p>Baker wasn&#8217;t just a well-placed rest stop, however. The so-called “Gateway to Death Valley” also boasted The World&#8217;s Tallest Thermometer. Standing 134 feet tall, the electrically-powered monument commemorates the world&#8217;s record highest temperature of 134°F (56.7°C), recorded at nearby Furnace Creek on July 10th, 1913.</p>
<h4>Uncool Cooler</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-120464" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/arnes-motel-4-644x966.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="966" /></p>
<p>On the downside, Baker is also home to a shuttered, 223-bed, for-profit prison formerly operated by Cornell Corrections. The prison&#8217;s checkered history includes occasional escapes by inmates (twice in 1995 and another two in 1997) and a major riot in December of 2003 that forced a temporary closure. The leaky slammer closed for good in late 2009, allowing nervous Bakerites (and motel room-renters) to breathe a bit easier.</p>

<p>Somewhere over the sea lies the abandoned Hotel La Rainbow, a cracked <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2014/05/11/diamonds-arent-forever-10-abandoned-jewelry-stores/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">jewel</a> of Japan&#8217;s Bubble Era that failed to attract its target market of <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2013/07/14/highest-steam-9-abandoned-railroad-bridge-trestles/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bridge</a> geeks.</p>
<h4>A Bridge, Too Far</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-119341" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/abandoned-hotel-la-rainbow-1b-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>The <em>“Hotel La Rainbow &amp; Tower”</em> (to use its official name) seemed like a great idea at the time. Then again, Japan&#8217;s lost and lamented “Bubble Era” saw countless such brainstorms bloom into <em>&#8220;what was I thinking &#8211; or drinking&#8221;</em> white elephants before the Asset Price Bubble economy finally burst in early 1992.</p>
<h4>Suspended Belief</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-119342" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/abandoned-hotel-la-rainbow-2-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>Not all of these extravagant mega-projects were busts, mind you. Take the Great Seto Bridge, a four-lane, double-deck, 8-mile-long series of 11 constituent bridges built – at a cost of US$ 7 billion – to connect the islands of Honshu and Shikoku. The Great Seto Bridge took 10 years to construct, saw the loss of 13 workers&#8217; lives in the process, and was considered a true wonder of the world when it opened in 1988.</p>
<h4>Ready, Seto, Go!</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-119343" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/abandoned-hotel-la-rainbow-3-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>Surely tourists from across the nation and the world at large would be flocking to Okayama prefecture to take in the jaw-dropping view of the Great Seto Bridge stretching out over the Inland Sea! If only there was a hotel, complete with observation tower, available for these deep-pocketed travelers to rest their bones and spend their yen&#8230; and in late-1980s Japan, investors&#8217; dreams all-too-often came true.</p>
<h4>Rooms With a View</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-119344" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/abandoned-hotel-la-rainbow-4-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>So it was that in late 1988, a private investment group opened the La Rainbow Hotel &amp; Tower, situated on a prime piece of Okayama real estate overlooking the Inland Sea. The view encompassed the 4,600 ft long Shimotsui-Seto Bridge (the northernmost stage of the Great Seto Bridge) and a number of small islands projected to become a sort of “Japanese Venice” as regional development progressed. Unfortunately, reality set in when the bubble burst and the associated Seto Sea Boom ended with a bang &#8211; and more than a few whimpers.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-119053" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/abandoned-japanese-hotel-1a-644x419.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="419" /></p>
<p>The reputedly haunted Nakagusuku Hotel in Okinawa, <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2011/09/25/anti-zombie-fortress-japans-abandoned-shime-winding-tower/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Japan</a> freaked-out construction workers so much, they walked off the job before the <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2018/09/16/inn-trouble-abandoned-brandermill-inn-conference-center/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hotel</a> was even finished.</p>
<h4>Guest Lost</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-119054" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/abandoned-japanese-hotel-1b-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>The ruins of the Nakagusuku Hotel in Kitanakagusuku, Okinawa are a rare example of a structure seemingly cursed by fate and doomed to failure BEFORE it could even open for business. Remember the creepy “sacrilegious” housing development in the movie <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084516/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Poltergeist</a>? It&#8217;s sorta like that, but in real life.</p>
<h4>Naming Names</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-119055" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/abandoned-japanese-hotel-2-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>There are many mysteries swirling around the Nakagusuku Hotel – even its name is open to question. Depending on who you ask, it&#8217;s been referred to variously as the Royal Hotel, the Takahara Hotel, and the Kogen Hotel. The “Royal Hotel” probably was the intended commercial name: the word “ROYAL” was painted above the entrance and although now quite faded, it can still be discerned in good lighting. The evocative photos accompanying this article, by the way, were posted to Flickr by member <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/keiya/albums/72157679152027538" target="_blank" rel="noopener">keiyac</a> in March of 2019.</p>
<h4>Forlorn Fortress</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-119056" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/abandoned-japanese-hotel-3-644x859.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="859" /></p>
<p>The aborted hotel&#8217;s location invites speculation as well, being situated a mere 50 meters (roughly 165 feet) from the ruins of <a href="https://www.nakagusuku-jo.jp/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nakagusuku Castle</a>. The latter is a 15th-century stone fortress that was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 2000&#8230; almost a quarter-century after construction started (and stopped) at the hotel site.</p>
<h4>All&#8217;s Fair</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-119057" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/abandoned-japanese-hotel-4-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p>But we digress&#8230; back to the oranges, er, origins of the story. In 1975 the island hosted the Okinawa Ocean Exposition, aka “<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expo_%2775" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Expo &#8217;75</a>”. This little-known event was a World&#8217;s Fair conceived as a way to celebrate the return of the Ryukyu Island chain to Japan from the United States a mere THREE YEARS earlier. Kinda quick as anniversaries go but hey, World&#8217;s Fair folks!</p>
<h4>Aha, Naha</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-119058" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/abandoned-japanese-hotel-5-644x423.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="423" /></p>
<p>A wealthy businessman from Naha (the capitol city of Okinawa) saw Expo &#8217;75 as a unique business opportunity, and quickly secured a prime stretch of property on a hilltop just south of the castle ruins. The location was perfect, offering breathtaking views of the East China Sea on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. The complex was to include a hotel, a vacation resort and a water park. What could possibly go wrong?</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-118203" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/bbee-haus-644x224.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="224" /></p>
<p>Talk of bees usually conjures images of buzzing hives acting in concert, but most species around the world are actually lowners, hence this series of chic abodes for less social bees. Honey bees and bumblebees work together, and get most of the media buzz, while solitary bees work alone &#8212; not producing honey or wax, but still playing an important role as pollinators in the global food system.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-118202" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/b-side-view-644x385.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p>“When we talk about bees, we usually imagine the European honey bee (Apis mellifera) when in reality, around 90 percent of the bee species are considered solitary,” explains Gabriel Calvillo of MaliArts, who designed these bee condos.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-118201" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/bee-home-detail-644x385.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p>“The fact that solitary bees do not generate any ‘consumable product’ for humans has meant that they are not given much attention, but recent studies point to the fact that they are possibly the most efficient pollinators in nature.”</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-118200" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/bee-house-round-644x385.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p>The &#8216;Refugio&#8217; series contains three different structures, each designed around the preferences of different solitary bees. They feature pine and teak wood finishes, ceramic roofs and steel legs with integrated feeding and watering systems for maximum comfort.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-118199" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/bee-homes-644x385.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="385" /></p>
<p>Perhaps most importantly: nearby literature will explain to passing city dwellers what the structures are about, and the importance of bees to the world as we know it.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-117137" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/paper-moon-lobby-644x429.png" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>It&#8217;s a simple but powerful idea, spreading out and embedding hotel rooms into the urban fabric to give visitors a space from which to explore as well as a place that feels like it&#8217;s more part of the city than a monolithic tourist resort. The Hotel Enso Ango features a series of zen-inspired buildings and landscaping in what it boasts as Japan&#8217;s first &#8216;dispersed hotel&#8217; in the ancient capital of Kyoto.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-117136" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/zen-tatami-meditation-space-644x429.png" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>

<p>The idea, in part, is to encourage travel between the buildings in the hotel network, both to experience their amenities but also to explore more along the way. In simple terms: it aims to combine the best of staying at a cozy bed-and-breakfast with the benefits of a high-end hotel.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-117132" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/garden-zone-644x429.png" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>

<p>Each unit features courtyard gardens and meditation spaces, aimed at providing a relaxing experience to compliment city exploration. There are also spaces, like a central bar, that are open to the public, offering opportunities to mingle with locals.</p>

<p>The spaces are spread out through key neighborhoods of Kyoto and crafted to be both contemporary while also including local art and craftsmanship. As the hotel grows, it aims to build out additional spaces around the city.</p>

<p>Each building is located within walking distance from the others, as well as from a hotel hub space where the lobby, gym and tearoom can be found, providing an opportunity for guests to mingle, but at their discretion rather than by necessity. Those who wish to can participate in group meditation lessons, tatami craft and runs through historic parts of the city.</p>

<p>&#8220;Welcoming visitors is a building which embodies classical Machiya construction featuring a front desk and corridor-cum-gallery space decorated with art by Masanobu Ando. At the end of this corridor, the gallery space opens into a lounge area with a small garden known as Tsuboniwa – a typical feature of Kyoto houses, providing a spot to enjoy nature and relax in the safety of a private space.&#8221;</p>
