Slatted Origami Canopy by Assemble Studio
Architecture and design firm Assemble Studio need only look up to get some inspiration, with an origami-like slatted wood ceiling canopy acting as a reminder of creative possibilities. The team designed it themselves, working first in paper to come up with an engaging faceted shape.
Undulating Stadium Ceiling
The parametrically designed ceiling structure at the V’ammos Restaurant in Piraeus Karaiskakis Stadium in Athens undulates in aquatic patterns over diners, the white waffle grid continuing through both public and private dining areas. Some of the compartments are topped with glass to act as skylights, bringing natural light into the space.
80,000 Wooden Dowels at Olga Nur Restaurant
80,000 wooden dowels hang down at staggered lengths from the roof canopy of Olga Nur restaurant in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, creating a wave-like topography that draws the eyes of passerby from outside the building’s transparent walls. Arquitetos Associates transformed an otherwise conventional eatery, creating an unforgettable atmosphere.
Webbed Dome Ceiling
Openings in the webbed structure of a domed ceiling cast dappled light over every surface inside the Louvre Abu Dhabi, making it feel as if it’s underwater. Designed by French firm Nathalie Criniere and not yet built, the structure is one of five major institutions planned for Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island Cultural District.
