<p>There are places in the world where a single road, wall or an even thinner, more invisible line separates rich from poor, and those are the kinds of intersections captured by photographer Johnny Miller.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116062" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/dividing-line-644x377.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="377" /></p>
<p>A student of anthropology, Miller started out using images to illustrate wealth disparities in South Africa, but has since gone on to photograph in India, Tanzania and even the United States. He spends much of his time scouring for locations, then charts a path to fly his photography drone.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116059" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/wealth-inequlaity-644x362.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p>“The images that I find the most powerful are when the camera is looking straight down—what’s known as ‘nadir view,&#8217; looking at the actual borders between rich and poor,” he says of <a href="https://www.facebook.com/unequalscenes"><em>Unequal Scenes</em></a>.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116060" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/division-rich-poor-644x362.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p>“Sometimes this is a fence, sometimes a road, or wetlands—with small shacks or poor houses on one side, and larger houses or mansions on the other.&#8221; At times, it&#8217;s the quality of the architecture, or its relative state of disuse, that defines these boundaries.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116061" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/black-and-white-644x362.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p>&#8220;Whatever it is about the composition of those photographs, they are extremely powerful to people. I think the images make inequality relevant—people can see themselves reflected in the images, and it’s deeply unsettling.&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116056" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/new-old-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>His goal is to raise awareness, in part by publishing and displaying his pictures around the world. “Through these conversations we can begin to understand the scope of the problem, and through that understanding, we can develop solutions.”</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-116055" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/lue-glass-644x362.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="362" /></p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98007" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/city-data-blocks-644x248.jpg" alt="city-data-blocks" width="644" height="248" /></p>
<p>Somewhere between data visualization and civic artwork, these info-driven diagrams reveal wealth disparities in the centers of America&#8217;s second and third largest cities. <a href="http://scherabon.com/">Herwig Scherabon</a>&#8216;s project, titled simply Income Inequality, uses a matrix of blocks (minimicking magnetized iron) to highlight rich and poor neighborhoods.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98006" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/urban-data-la-chicago-644x743.jpg" alt="urban-data-la-chicago" width="644" height="743" /></p>
<p>The city grids form a recognizable backdrop for these axonometric representations, allowing viewers to read the baseline built enviroment against the overlaid information. In turn, the millions of stacked pixel blocks end up forming an alternative landscape of skyscraper-like structures in the urban environment.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98005" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/income-inequality-representations-644x1288.jpg" alt="income-inequality-representations" width="644" height="1288" /></p>
<p>The net result is a map of the city&#8217;s invisible patterns and correlations shaped by power, money and time, revealing inequalities and mechanisms of segregation. Above: Chicago&#8217;s infamous low-income South Side (with Lake Michigan for reference). Below: poor areas of Los Angeles located directly next to the downtown core.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98004" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/cityscape-by-wealth-and-poverty-644x1288.jpg" alt="cityscape-by-wealth-and-poverty" width="644" height="1288" /></p>
<p>The final presentation was mounted on a pair of wooden boards with the city names shown on the cites, exhibited at the Glasgow School of Art graduate show. Captions on the side give more details on the diagrams.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98001" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/city-captions-on-side-644x970.jpg" alt="city-captions-on-side" width="644" height="970" /></p>
<p>From the artist/designer: &#8220;The two large prints (150x75cm) are visualizations of income inequality in Los Angeles and Chicago and are currently shortlisted for the Information is Beautiful Awards. They are printed on matte Somerset Velvet paper and mounted on thick wooden boards. The images are abstract diagrams of these cities that show a high resolution matrix of blocks. The height of these blocks corresponds to the income in the respective output area.&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98003" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/downtown-millions-of-blocks-644x427.jpg" alt="downtown-millions-of-blocks" width="644" height="427" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-98002" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/wall-mounted-artworks-644x524.jpg" alt="wall-mounted-artworks" width="644" height="524" /></p>
<p>&#8220;It is part of the design idea to inspire the viewer to look for their own neighborhood or other areas that interest them. I want to trigger a train of thought for what the reasons behind inequality might be. I am always fascinated by the patterns and correlations in the urban fabric. The politics behind urban planning tell us a lot about the people who live in these places and the powers who shape them. I think that it is utterly important to try to unveil the inequalities and the segregating mechanism that we got used to live with.&#8221;</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-93976" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/aerial-apartheid-644x362.jpg" alt="aerial apartheid" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p>Though the apartheid ended decades ago, many physical barriers remain in South Africa, highly visible in the built environment &#8230; especially from above.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-93975" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/dividing-line-644x362.jpg" alt="dividing line" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p>Roads, rivers and strips of open land captured by Cape Town-based photographer <a href="http://millefoto.com/about-me/">Johnny Miller</a> illustrate the divide in a photo series dubbed <a href="http://www.unequalscenes.com/projects">Unequal Scenes</a>.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-93971" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/rich-versus-poor-644x365.jpg" alt="rich versus poor" width="644" height="365" /></p>
<p>Details give way to patterns in these birds-eye views, highlighting a landscape-scarring history of institutionalized segregation and inequality. Haphazard and densely packed shacks may fall on one side of a line while organized and expansive homes can be seen on the other, often separated by nearly-invisible lines.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-93977" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/wrapping-shacks-644x359.jpg" alt="wrapping shacks" width="644" height="359" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-93970" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/south-africa-644x362.jpg" alt="south africa" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p>&#8220;During apartheid, segregation of urban spaces was instituted as policy,&#8221; explains Miller, with &#8220;buffer zones of empty land, and other barriers were constructed and modified to keep people separate.&#8221; Even today, &#8220;communities of extreme wealth and privilege will exist just meters from squalid conditions and shack dwellings.&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-93972" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/housing-patterns-644x342.jpg" alt="housing patterns" width="644" height="342" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-93973" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/housing-divide-644x362.jpg" alt="housing divide" width="644" height="362" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-93974" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/rich-and-poor-644x390.jpg" alt="rich and poor" width="644" height="390" /></p>
<p>&#8220;My desire with this project is to portray the most Unequal Scenes in South Africa as objectively as possible. By providing a new perspective on an old problem, I hope to provoke a dialogue which can begin to address the issues of inequality and disenfranchisement in a constructive and peaceful way.&#8221; Miller has an upcoming show this fall in Johannesburg for those who want to see his work large and up close, to be announced on his <a href="https://www.facebook.com/unequalscenes">social feeds</a> (via <a href="http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2016/06/aerial-south-africa-johnny-miller/?src=footer">Colossal</a>).</p>

<p>Located in a converted subterranean silo near Concordia, Kansas, the first complex of these high-end survival accommodations is already sold out and their creators are working on a second nuke-proof silo transformation project for eager buyers. Many <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2010/07/25/nuclear-family-housing-life-in-a-missile-silo-home/">silo homes exist already</a>, but few are designed for multi-family living and many <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2013/10/01/bunker-city-underground-suburb-for-survivalist-community/">remain semi-theoretical as yet</a> &#8211; this one is luxurious and fully realized.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75420" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/luxury-condo-floor-plan-468x396.jpg" alt="luxury condo floor plan" width="468" height="396" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75422" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/luxury-underground-living-complex-468x318.jpg" alt="luxury underground living complex" width="468" height="318" /></p>
<p><a href="http://www.survivalcondo.com/">Luxury Survival Condos</a> boasts both the nuts and bolts, <em>&#8220;physical protection, redundant infrastructure for power, water, air, and food,&#8221;</em> as well as a surprising array of amenities: facilities for <em>&#8220;cross training, aquaponic farming, medical support&#8221;</em> including a <em>&#8220;community swimming pool, dog walking park, rock climbing wall, theater and general store&#8221; </em>as well as a jail for anyone who misbehaves.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75424" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/luxury-subterranean-underground-condoes-468x486.jpg" alt="luxury subterranean underground condoes" width="468" height="486" /></p>
<p>The eye-popping prices are compared by founder Larry Hall to Manhattan residences, but seem steep even by New York City metrics: $1.5 million for a half-floor unit just under 1,000 square feet, $3 million for a full floor and $4.5 million for a &#8220;penthouse&#8221; (two floors). For those who can afford it, the company also offers their services for transforming whole silos into single-family survival retreats.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-75416" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/missile-silo-montage.jpg" alt="missile silo montage" width="468" height="388" /></p>
<p>The first space was purchased in 2008 and features seven floors of living spaces, able to accommodate up to 75 occupants. The various areas are connected by elevators (to be powered by green off-grid sources in an emergency) as well as stairs for redundancy. Each resident is allocated a 5-year supply of freeze-dried food in addition to the vegetables and fish grown and bred underground. Water and air treatment are addressed as well, with a 750,000-gallon reserve of drinking water as well as filtering systems. Generators and wind turbines feed into a battery bank to store up at least some level of power reserves as needed.</p>

<p>Given how much people pay to buy these units one has to wonder if they ever bother to use them under normal conditions, perhaps to get a sense of what life would really be like should they end up living there in a real end-of-world scenario. Of course, the standard problems apply: if others know where this is, what is to keep the hordes from attempting to overwhelm it were a global disaster ever to unfold?</p>

<p>It is increasingly common to find London properties that have more subterranean interior space than above-ground square footage, a byproduct of the wealthy desiring to build additions without tripping over surface-oriented building codes. New legislation in some boroughs of the city aims to cut down on permits issue to such underground expansions and could provide guidance for other cities dealing with similar issues around the world.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-74333" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/mega-basement-468x292.jpg" alt="mega basement" width="468" height="292" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-74329" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/london-subterranean-super-basement-468x355.jpg" alt="'Iceberg house' illustration" width="468" height="355" /></p>
<p>While not entirely unique to England, the phenomena has reached a critical point in the region. In Greater London, anecdotes around these mega-basements abound, including stories of the compromising neighboring houses by undermining their structural integrity. As <a href="http://curbed.com/archives/2014/12/11/this-is-what-people-mean-by-iceberg-home.php">Curbed</a> reports: <em>&#8220;In a <a href="http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/banker-says-sorry-over-basement-work-damage-as-kensington-neighbours-suffer-7978751.html" target="_blank">famous case</a> from 2012, excavation work under the mansion of a Goldmann Sachs director resulted in his neighbor getting trapped inside her home, unable to open her front door since it had shifted so much.&#8221;</em></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-74332" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/mega-basement-design-468x416.jpg" alt="mega basement design" width="468" height="416" /></p>
<p>Indeed, the billionaires building these projects do a lot of strange things to maintain their bottom line while maximizing their additions, including leaving diggers worth thousands of dollars each (millions in aggregate) <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2014/06/10/machine-cemetery-diggers-bury-selves-in-unmarked-graves/">buried in unmarked and self-dug graves</a> simply because the cost of excavating exceeds that of retrieving them. Like other facets of this phenomena, the lack of visibility relating to such practices has helped keep them hidden from public scrutiny.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-74328" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/london-basement-expansion-diagram-468x216.jpg" alt="london basement expansion diagram" width="468" height="216" /></p>
<p>Over the last decade, the demand for permits to extend below ground has skyrocketed, increasing by over tenfold. In response to the growing concern over these practices, Chelsea and other boroughs are considering measures including: restricting below-ground extensions to a single story, reducing the distance they can expand beyond the building footprint and capping the total subterranean square footage by project <em>(diagrams via <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-481013/Foxtons-owner-plans-multi-million-pound-underground-extension-London-home.html">TheDailyMail</a> and <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2012/nov/09/billionaires-basements-london-houses-architecture">TheGuardian</a>)</em>.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-74327" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/mole-man-underground-house.jpg" alt="mole man underground house" width="468" height="555" /></p>
<p>Finally, any discussion of tunnels and London would be remiss not to mention the famous case of the Mole Man, which helped bring many of these other oddities to light. Without permits or permission of any time, this now-infamous Hackney resident began to burrow beneath his house. William Lyttle ultimately tunneled outward in various directions and well beyond his own property line and underneath adjacent streets and homes. For the safety of all involved, the building has been condemned though there are potential plans in place to turn it into artist housing.</p>
