The 20th-century American dream of suburban houses and picket fences unfolded in parallel with another vision: freedom to roam, embodied in camper vans and other mobile housing designs. The increasing costs of city living and desire to escape nine-to-five life has since led to a new generation of creative solutions, ranging from converted camper vans and buses to space-saving sleeping trailers that can be towed behind cars or even two-wheeled vehicles.

DIY & Professional Van Home Conversions

Many mobile living creations of this new millennium are actually adaptations of existing vehicles, including do-it-yourself van rehabs as well as professional remodels.

Some are cheap, simple and use recycled materials while others feature more luxurious amenities and higher levels of finish — as with most things, you get what you pay for, whether in dollars or sweat equity.

The more modest exterior appearances of some such livable vans can be deceiving – many stealth campers and DIY RVs include solar-paneled roofs, custom wood trim, flip-down window covers and even flip-up computer desks designed for digital nomads. Many of these features can be all but invisible from the outside.

Livable City & School Buses Transformations

Wanderers requiring more room for extravehicular activities may require something bigger but presumably still street legal, making buses a natural option for larger-scale mobile makeovers. A city bus has its advantages, including expansive windows for those seeking extra sunlight.

Meanwhile, plain old yellow school buses offer benefits as well, including more standardized design elements to work with. These can be turned into expansive pads of all kinds, whether they are fitted with elegantly curved plywood or sliced, diced and topped with rustic timber frames.

Modular Sleeping Trailers Make More of Less

Not everyone can afford the time or money to buy or convert a van or bus. For those who need something smaller that can be hitched to a more traditional vehicle, there are still a lot of clever ways to get the most out of limited trailer space, including pop-outs and auto-expanding rooms that deploy on demand.

Flaps, wings and other folding elements can help bring more outdoor space in, extending interiors to include sheltered zones beyond the limits of whatever one has in tow.

Even a surprisingly small trailer can pack a lot of utility, including running water, power outlets, USB ports and LED lights — some even feature a full modular kitchen for a bit of light glamping. Mounted toolboxes, roof racks and cargo decks can help expand their functionality as well.

Bicycle, Motorcycle & Other Small-Space Trailers

Choosing to ride a bike instead of driving a car doesn’t have to mean foregoing the convenience of a camper trailer, though such options may require especially clever construction (not to mention physical endurance) in place of motorized assistance (or at least: an electric assist bicycle).

There may be rules to the roads, but there are practically no limits to the creativity of people who want to live their lives on them. Beyond the realm of conventional conversions are all kinds of creative cars, vans and trucks that are effectively inhabitable art.

It goes without saying that no one knows what the future of mobility will look like, but imagine for a moment a kind of city on rails made up of modules that could be moved from one place to the next, all running on existing train tracks. Consider the advantages for migratory seasonal markets, mobile concert venues and other businesses and events that benefit from moving around throughout the year, embracing a sort of perpetually nomadic urbanism. Hotels, restaurants and other commercial operations see changes in demand throughout a given year and and could conceivably pull up stakes to seek out better opportunities.

It may be an exercise in fantasy, but one has to wonder: what would the world look like if more people could take their architecture with them as they traveled? Between food trucks and container homes and other modular living solutions, not to mention the rise of autonomous vehicles, this prospect is in some ways already grounded in the real world around us. As more and more people move ever more often, working remotely and take their homes and businesses on the road, new typologies for portable spaces will no doubt continue to emerge and surprise us along the way.

Campers are cool and all, but they’re almost always too bulky for off-road travel, and they guzzle a lot of gas. But what if you could fit all the bells and whistles of a well-appointed RV into a compact camper van, including a bathroom with a shower? German manufacturer Hymer claims they’ve designed the camper van of the future in “VisionVenture,” a concept built on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis.

Hymer says they got pretty much all their ideas for slick upgrades seen in this concept by keeping a close eye on the #vanlife community and seeing how they modify their own vehicles and what they have wished for. They basically took that wish list and satisfied virtually every item on it.

With four wheel drive for off-road use, the van features selected body parts produced using 3D printing technology for durability and precision along with infrared-reflective paint. A pneumatic pop-top roof offers a comfortable place to sleep, freeing up the cabin for lounging, cooking and storing belongings.

Envisioned as a mobile luxury apartment for the year 2025, the VisionVenture is outfitted with bamboo, gray felt and leather, a rear patio with a BBQ, a generous amount of kitchen space and a transforming bathroom with rolling wall and a vanity sink that rotates to offer a rain shower.

Though it’s still just a concept, it’s a particularly exciting one for anyone who loves taking road trips in comfort and style.

Is there anything that can’t be convincingly reproduced to scale with LEGOs? Enthusiasts of these plastic toy bricks are constantly taking their creations to the next level, and full-scale (and often functional) vehicles continue to rank among the most impressive competitive LEGO projects in the land. Just a few months after a unique LEGO trailer made its debut at the British National Motor Museum in Beaulieu, LEGO certified master model maker Rene Hoffmeister and Pascal Lenhardbuilt present an incredible LEGO Volkswagen Type 2 Kombi camper van.

Unveiled at the F.re.e Travel and Leisure Fair in Germany, the model was built around a steel tube frame and features a pop-up camper top, charming retro interiors full of fun period details, a sink, dishes, a coffee serving set, toothbrushes, a gas stove, working lights and – most impressively – a functional sliding door. Weighing 1,543 pounds and measuring over 16.4 feet long, the camper can accommodate the weight of two adults. It took 400,000 LEGO bricks to complete. Maybe it doesn’t start and roll down the road – but there are other LEGO cars that do.

Previously, a LEGO building specialist called Bright Bricks broke the Guinness World Record for the “largest caravan built with interlocking plastic bricks” using 215,158 LEGOs. The teardrop trailer boasted electric power, a fold-up beda vase of LEGO flowers and more, and weighed 2,645 pounds measuring 11.8 feet long. While the new camper appears to best this one by quite a lot, it remains to be seen whether it’ll be officially recognized as a new winner.

Smaller than an iconic “silver bullet” Airstream trailer but cuter than the brand’s compact lightweight Nest model, the new Airstream Basecamp X is designed to go farther than ever. An upgrade to the standard Basecamp model released in 2016, the X adds three inches of extra ground clearance, Goodyear all-terrain tires, increased departure angles and a steel front stone guard to stand up to road conditions far off the beaten path – but it retains a sense of Airstream charm.

Rugged off-road trailers are big business, and there are certainly plenty of them to choose from, whether you’re a hardcore survivalist looking for a bug-out vehicle or just like a little more comfort than tent camping can offer when you’re in the wilderness. Some simply contain the basics and pack down to highly streamlined proportions, and some include everything you can imagine needing, including the kitchen sink. But if you’re an Airstream enthusiast stuck on a classic look, the Basecamp X may be a nice compromise, and at $39,600, it comes a lot cheaper than the full-length version, which can run upwards of $100K.

The Basecamp X weighs in at 2,635 pounds with a gross weight rating of 3,500 pounds, falling into the towing capacity range of many small and midsize SUVs. Inside, it’s got a convertible sofa bed offering accommodations for two travelers, a small kitchenette and bathroom and a large back door for loading kayaks and other gear. It’s pre-wired for solar panels, too. It may not be quite rugged enough to manage the rockiest of roads, but it’s capable of handling the needs of most outdoor enthusiasts.

The Nest, which debuted last year, is more of a departure from Airstream’s general aesthetic with its molded fiberglass body, but it’s also super lightweight and more comfortable and spacious inside than the Basecamp, for those who prefer a slightly less adventurous approach to trailer camping.

The Air Opus Camper packs down into a surprisingly tiny trailer box easily towed behind a vehicle, but deploys automatically in less than two minutes (then folds back up in just 30 seconds).

Using what the company calls “Air Pole Technology,” the pre-inflation process is pretty straightforward: the top panels are flipped outward and a quick-release lever pulled.

Once it is open, a few bed supports need to be snapped into place for sleeping, but the structure is otherwise self-contained and essentially ready for use immediately.

By folding both upward and outward, the design makes maximum use of a small initial footprint, roughly doubling usable area within once it is set up.

Furniture, meanwhile, is a combination of of inflated and folding, again to minimize spatial requirements, helping make the whole setup more compact for travel.

The camper retails for a bit over $20,000, so not cheap, but it offers a lot of space illuminated by built-in windows and skylights, plus a pull-out kitchen and grill for outdoor cooking (which also helps free up interior space for living and sleeping).
