<p>Vegetarian <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2016/02/21/takeout-shakeout-10-abandoned-chinese-food-restaurants/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">restaurants</a> are becoming more mainstream and, inadvertently or not, distinctive branding and signage helps them stand out from the <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2016/06/05/cows-of-a-different-color-the-moooving-art-project/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">herd</a>. </p>
<h4>It Ain&#8217;t Meat, Babe</h4>
<p><img decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/vegetarian-restaurants-1b-644x859.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="859" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-120868" /></p>
<p>You can take their word for it, this meat-free eatery in Tokyo&#8217;s Kinshicho district is, er, as meat-free as they come. Mind you, they&#8217;re not stating <em>It&#8217;s Delicious</em>, only that <em>It&#8217;s Vegetable</em>. At least it&#8217;s not Mineral. Flickr member <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mdesjardin/2681703358/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">non-euclidean photography</a> captured the above Taiwanese restaurant&#8217;s front facade and sign in June of 2008.</p>
<h4>Pot Pies?</h4>
<p><img decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/vegetarian-restaurants-2-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-120869" /></p>
<p>Best thing about the Herbal (not “Horrible”) Pizzeria? When calling in an order, you never have to specify <em>“no anchovies, please”</em>. That said, what the heck is an herbal pizza? Try the Scarborough Fair, topped with parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. Looking ahead, this shop&#8217;s already got a running start on the budding CBD-infused pizza sector. What&#8217;s more: they work with <a href="https://goldbee.com/">Gold Bee</a> to ensure that they only use the finest <a href="https://goldbee.com/cbd-oils/">CBD oil</a> to infuse into their slices of pizza goodness! Goodbye ham &#038; pineapple, hello hemp &#038; pineapple express! Flickr member <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/orlick/5538294545/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Jeff</a> snapped the venerable vegetarian pizza parlor in early 2011. </p>
<h4>Oh Yah</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/vegetarian-restaurants-3-644x973.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="973" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-120870" /></p>
<p>Chicago-area foodies oughta check out this place, recommended by Flickr member <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/reallyboring/6994996887/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Eric Allix Rogers</a> as <em>“still the best vegan soul food joint in South Shore.”</em> While such glowing reviews are a good sign for any restaurant, this one has some bad issues <em>with</em> its sign. Not the tilted and/or missing letters&#8230; they evoke a certain sense of charm. Nope, we&#8217;re referring to the font used on the sign just below. Pro tip: a restaurant that offers meals sans meat should present signage sans Comic Sans. </p>
<h4>Goulash Vegas</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/vegetarian-restaurants-4-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-120871" /></p>
<p>What happens in Budapest stays in Budapest, whether one&#8217;s Hungary or not. Welcome to Las Vegan&#8217;s, a rather inconspicuous dining kiosk that probably won&#8217;t make anyone&#8217;s to-do Liszt. Flickr member <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/sharonhahndarlin/40759940080/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Sharon Hahn Darlin</a> took a gamble on this cutely-named diner on the Danube in June of 2018.</p>
<h4>Milkshaken, not Stirred</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/vegetarian-restaurants-5-644x688.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="688" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-120872" /></p>
<p>Vegetarian sushi is one of those uncomfortable conjunctions like jumbo shrimp, plastic glass and military intelligence. Still, you&#8217;ve gotta give Emeryville, CA&#8217;s Sushi Village props for advertising <em>“vegetarian drinks”</em>, whatever that means. We can guess what it doesn&#8217;t mean: no Bloody Marys, Moscow Mules, or anything made with Wild Turkey bourbon. Flickr member <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/drcohen/262824055/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">David Cohen</a> felt intrigued enough by the concept to snap the store sign back in October of 2006. </p>

<p>Tea <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2019/03/03/worker-be-10-were-hiring-signs-of-the-times/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">time</a> waits for no one and the former Tea Rooms on London&#8217;s Museum Street is no exception, its <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2015/01/25/afterglow-luma-tower-glasgows-shining-art-deco-icon/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Art Deco</a> facade gracefully decaying as the years go by.</p>
<h4>True Be Leafers</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-119514" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/abandoned-tea-rooms-1b-644x546.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="546" /></p>
<p>Located at 11 Museum Street in Bloomsbury, central London, the <a href="http://www.classiccafes.co.uk/tearoomsspecial.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tea Rooms</a> was a cozy little cafe owned and operated by Eugenio and Rene (“Rina”) Corsini. The couple opened their doors in 1960 and proceeded to serve untold numbers of fresh cuppas over a 44-year span. When her husband passed away in 2000, Rene carried on: she said that catering to her beloved regular customers helped her in her bereavement. By 2004, however, rents in the trendy West End were rising and Rene decided to call it a day. The two photos above, snapped by Flickr member <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/niznoz/albums/72157623371621327" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nicholas Noyes</a> in April of 2003 and January of 2005 respectively, bracket the last days of the Tea Rooms&#8217; cozy, formica-lined existence.</p>
<h4>Steeped In History</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-119515" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/abandoned-tea-rooms-2-644x525.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="525" /></p>
<p>After it closed, the Tea Rooms embarked on a surreal sort of afterlife unintentionally documented by an unaffiliated succession of Flickr members month after month, year after year. The surreality comes into play as the former cafe&#8217;s facade inexorably evolves – or should we say, “devolves”. Perhaps the most obvious milestone in the shop&#8217;s decline occurred later in 2005 when, as shown above in Flickr member <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/estherase/51248209/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Esther Simpson</a>&#8216;s image from October, the three-piece plastic Art Deco-lettered sign either fell down or was manually removed revealing the original hand-painted ghost sign that had been hidden underneath.</p>
<h4>In Hot Water</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-119516" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/abandoned-tea-rooms-3-644x516.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="516" /></p>
<p>By the time Flickr member <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/timrich26/2647849572/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">T &amp; L</a> snapped the above shot in mid-2008, this section of Museum Street was looking grim indeed&#8230; and we&#8217;re not only referring to the demonic face an anonymous street artist applied to the Tea Rooms&#8217; front door. Rather, the issue of increasing rents alluded to by Rene Corsini in director <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2xS74e6XBM" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Paul Kelly&#8217;s 2004 short film</a> would appear to have caused the “Joie” clothing store next-door to close shop as well.</p>

<h4>The Iron Fairies Underground Bar Full of Butterflies by Ashley Sutton</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-109718" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/butterfly-den-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-109717" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/butterfly-den-2-644x966.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="966" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-109716" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/butterfly-den-3-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-109715" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/butterfly-den-4-644x429.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="429" /></p>
<p>A curious underground den with three locations in Bangkok, Hong Kong and Tokyo, <a href="https://www.ashleysuttondesign.com/projects/iron-fairies">‘The Iron Fairies’ by Ashley Sutton Design</a> feels like something out of a movie with its dim blacksmith-forge-inspired furniture, hanging bundles of herbs and an incredible ceiling installation covered in 10,000 preserved butterflies. More intimate rooms are located inside old furnaces.</p>
<h4>Romola in Madrid by Andrés Jaque / Office for Political Innovation</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-109754" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/romola-restaurant-1-644x1075.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="1075" /></p>

<p>Slotting seamlessly into a midcentury building in Milan, <a href="http://andresjaque.net/">‘Romola’ by Andrés Jack</a> is a marbled masterpiece in pale greens and pinks, with a stunning geometric ceiling installation complementing the luxurious floors. Triangles of marble dangle overhead, creating a sort of ‘tent’ below the high industrial ceiling with plants hanging between the panels.</p>
<h4>Worlds Unleashed And Then Connecting: Interactive Installation in Tokyo by Teamlab</h4>

<p><div class='video-box'><iframe type='text/html' src='http://player.vimeo.com/video/211630785' allowfullscreen frameborder='0'></iframe></div></p>
<p>Japanese collective <a href="https://www.teamlab.art/">Teamlab</a> created one of their <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2017/04/14/a-taste-of-japan-immersive-animated-restaurant-shifts-with-the-seasons/">signature interactive experiences</a> inside Tokyo’s Saga Beef Restaurant SAGAYA Ginza with unforgettable results. “When a dish is placed on the table, the scenic world contained with the dish is unleashed, unfolding onto the table and into the surrounding space,” they explain. “For example, a bird painted on a ceramic dish is released from the dish and can perch on the branch of a tree that has been unleashed from a different dish.”</p>
<h4>Underwater Restaurant in Norway by Snøhetta</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-109738" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/underwater-restaurant-in-norway-644x336.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="336" /></p>

<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-109735" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/underwater-restaurant-in-norway-4-644x457.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="457" /></p>
<p>A monolithic structure looks like it has broken off into the ocean after some sort of apocalyptic event, resulting in its glass-fronted facade pointing deep into the water. But it’s no accident. Architecture firm<a href="https://snohetta.com/"> Snøhetta</a> has designed Europe’s first underwater restaurant set along the Norwegian coastline by the village of Båly. ‘Under’ will double as a marine research center, and over time, its concrete shell will encourage mollusks to latch on, creating an artificial mussel reef.</p>
<h4>Koi Cafe in Hanoi, Vietnam by Farming Studio</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-109751" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/koi-cafe-644x966.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="966" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-109750" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/koi-cafe-2-644x475.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="475" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-109749" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/koi-cafe-3-644x954.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="954" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-109748" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/koi-cafe-4-644x953.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="953" /></p>
<p>This charming cafe in a three-story Hanoi residence is centered upon an indoor koi pond, with water raining down into it all the way from the top level. Vietnamese design firm <a href="https://divisare.com/authors/2144814057-farming-studio">Farming Studio</a> used recycled wood from the original site to create a warm and rustic ceiling and custom tables looking out onto the water. The koi tank is a closed-cycle system using waste from the fish in the aquarium to support the lush green roof of the cafe.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-104332" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/abandoned-fish-chips-1b-644x430.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="430" /></p>

<p>American fish &amp; chip shops have suffered a decline as well, especially fast food seafood restaurant chains like Arthur Treacher&#8217;s and H. Salt Esquire – both the chains and the affordable stocks of cod that sustained them are pale shadows of what they used to be. Family-run chippies linger on, however, though the once-charming Porto Restaurant in Edinburgh, Scotland&#8217;s seaside Portobello neighborhood is no longer them. Flickr users <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/davesinclair/4693954531/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Dave Sinclair</a> and <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/fabbiomenna/5214363618/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Fabio Menna</a> snapped the shop in long-abandoned and newly-abandoned states, respectively.</p>
<h4>Dog&#8217;s Breakfast</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-104334" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/abandoned-fish-chips-2a-644x488.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="488" /></p>
<p>One would hope &#8220;Helen&#8221; was able to retire from retail fish-frying with a modicum of grace when her self-titled chippie in Maidstone (a suburb of Melbourne) went belly-up. Then again, maybe Australians just aren&#8217;t that into fish &amp; chips, what with all that <em>&#8220;throw another shrimp on the barbie&#8221;</em> stuff. Flickr user Warren Kirk (<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/70980743@N03/8161944181/">Westographer</a>) captured the closed, abandoned, boarded-up and unlamented (save for a disappointed-looking dog) &#8220;Helen&#8217;s Fish ~ Chips&#8221; on a sunny December morning in 2011.</p>
<h4>Parson&#8217;s Nose Best</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-104336" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/abandoned-fish-chips-3a-644x430.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="430" /></p>
<p>As if a chippie on the High Street wasn&#8217;t Brit enough, the owners named the place &#8220;The New Parson&#8217;s Nose&#8221;&#8230; wonder what happened to the OLD one? Regardless, the sign on the window states the shop is <em>&#8220;closed for refurbishment&#8221;</em> and you know what that means: it&#8217;s gone like last night&#8217;s last pint of ale. Kudos to Flickr user leon S-D (<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/21094292@N02/27513488430/">littleweed1950</a>) who snapped this pub-like former fish &amp; chips shop in June of 2016.</p>
<h4>Taken Away</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-104337" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/abandoned-fish-chips-4a-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p><em>&#8220;Over the last 40 years or so (in Australia at least) the traditional old style strip of shops in the suburbs has come under pressure from large shopping malls,&#8221;</em> states urbex blogger <a href="http://www.urbex.50megs.com/Abandoned_Desolate_Urban_Exploration/Mt_Gravatt_Shops/Mt_Gravatt_Shops.html">David Taylor</a>. Just wait, Dave, those large shopping malls have begun to feel a similar sort of pressure from online retailers. There&#8217;s nothing like the unique ambiance and the sit-sown dining experience of a classic Chippie, mind you. Taylor snapped the above faded Seafood Take Away in Mt Gravatt, a suburb of Brisbane.</p>
<h4>Over, The Rainbow</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-104338" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/abandoned-fish-chips-5b-644x483.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="483" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-wide644 wp-image-104339" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/abandoned-fish-chips-5a-644x859.jpg" alt="" width="644" height="859" /></p>
<p>Fish &amp; Chips, Burgers, Southern Fried Chicken and so much more&#8230; how could Rainbow Spicy Kebabs, snapped in the summer of 2013 by Flickr user <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/25229906@N00/15611193841/in/photostream/">Robby Virus</a>, possibly go under? Well, they COULD have prepared all of those things poorly, for one thing. It just goes to show you, a prime location in the heart of London offers no guarantee your fish &amp; chips (&amp; more) shop will achieve lasting success. Also, rainbows aren&#8217;t colored that way. Just sayin&#8217;.</p>

<p><span id="more-89549"></span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-89552" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/abandoned-dairy-queen-1a-468x252.jpg" alt="abandoned-dairy-queen-1a" width="468" height="252" /></p>
<p>Founded in June of 1940, Dairy Queen has carved out a viable, sustainable, and <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/rickthephotoguy/5865179899/in/photostream/" target="_blank">for the most part</a> successful niche in the fast, er, &#8220;fan food&#8221; industry. Take it from Warren Buffett – the legendary investor&#8217;s Berkshire Hathaway holding company has owned International Dairy Queen Inc outright since 1998.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-89553" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/abandoned-dairy-queen-1b-468x313.jpg" alt="abandoned-dairy-queen-1b" width="468" height="313" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-89554" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/abandoned-dairy-queen-1c-468x313.jpg" alt="abandoned-dairy-queen-1c" width="468" height="313" /></p>
<p>Though abandoned <em>by</em> <a href="http://www.ettractions.com/destination/Chicago/28/Illinois/5/OriginalDairyQueen/profile/11374" target="_blank">Dairy Queen</a>, the chain&#8217;s <a href="http://azfoo.net/gdt/babs/2012/03/pidayDQ.html" target="_blank">original location</a> on 501 N. Chicago St. in Joliet, IL still stands thanks to its 2010 designation as a city landmark. Originally built in 1895, the building was a DQ until the early 1950s – subsequent tenants included a lawn-mower repair business, a furniture store, a motorcycle shop and a plumber. Since 2007 the <a href="http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2010-11-21/news/ct-met-joliet-dairy-queen-1121-20101121_1_ice-cream-soft-serve-dean-peters" target="_blank">Universal Church of the Kingdom of God</a> has dispensed The Lord&#8217;s message at the historic location, presumably accompanied by chilled communion wafers.</p>
<h4>More Like Ender</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-89559" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/abandoned-dairy-queen-2a-468x431.jpg" alt="abandoned-dairy-queen-2a" width="468" height="431" /></p>
<p><em>&#8220;Abandon all hope, ye who enter here&#8230;&#8221;</em> the hope of enjoying some fan food (not fast food), that is. Credit Flickr user <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/26557483@N08/13920529529/" target="_blank">haymarketrebel</a> with the above photo of a closed and abandoned Dairy Queen in Tustin, CA snapped on November 20th of 2013.</p>
<h4>Grilled, Chilled, Killed</h4>

<p>Traditional fixtures of small-town America, larger and more restaurant-style Dairy Queen Grill &amp; Chill stores began to appear in 2001. The above store, located in Savannah, GA sports the revised corporate logo that debuted in 2007.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-89558" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/abandoned-dairy-queen-3c-468x624.jpg" alt="abandoned-dairy-queen-3c" width="468" height="624" /></p>
<p>Too big to fail? <em>Nuh uh:</em> Flickr user <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/32911630@N03/5655330071/in/photostream/" target="_blank">C-Bunny</a> snapped the shuttered store in April of 2011 and noted the presence of &#8220;Closed for Renovation&#8221; and &#8220;Notice of Bankruptcy&#8221; signs plastered to the glass drive-thru window. Which is it, DQ&#8230; why not both?</p>
<h4>Stuckey&#8217;s to be You</h4>

<p>Flickr user Steven Wilson (<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/ezeiza/albums/72157617276864525" target="_blank">ezeiza</a>) has the hots for Dairy Queen: his dedicated online album features over 140 photos and counting! Wilson included but a single <em>abandoned</em> DQ; a combination Stuckey&#8217;s/Dairy Queen store in Lindsborg, KS that judging by the overgrown landscaping has been shut for some time.</p>
