<p>Architecturally inspired animated 3D scenes pay tribute to David Bowie, Darth Vader and Daft Punk in a striking new series by Vincent Viriot. The direction and motion designer created the ‘<a href="https://www.behance.net/gallery/75565101/ICONIC" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ICONIC’ trio of animated graphics</a> for a Parisian design studio of the same name in what has got to be some of the coolest branding ever.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/daftpunkgif.gif" alt="" width="649" height="365" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-118787" /></p>
<p><img decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/bowiegif.gif" alt="" width="640" height="360" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-118786" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/vadergif.gif" alt="" width="640" height="360" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-118785" /></p>
<p>Each of the three images is rendered in black, white and metallics, incorporating geometric forms, spheres, and elements that rotate and unfold. Ever wish you could see inside Darth Vader’s head? In Viriot’s vision, as half of the villain’s face swings to the side, we find yet more rotating shapes and an impenetrable core.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-118781" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Vader-detail.jpg" alt="" width="1200" height="1200" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-118780" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Bowie-detail.jpg" alt="" width="1200" height="1200" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-118779" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Daft-punk-detial.jpg" alt="" width="1200" height="1200" /></p>
<p>The close-up shots of each animation give those of us who aren’t digital animators a fascinating glimpse into the hyperrealistic details.</p>

<p>The classic <a href="http://growingupfortcollins.com/good-cheap-fun-summer-mystery-art-hunt-2/" target="_blank">Campbell&#8217;s Soup can</a> has been around a LONG time. Look closely at the gold medallion superimposed onto the divide between red and white: as stated, it was awarded to the company at the 1900 Paris International Exposition. More recently (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campbell%27s_Soup_Cans" target="_blank">1962 to be exact</a>), pop artist Andy Warhol immortalized the by-then familiar can in one of his best-known paintings.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-92394" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/campbell-soup-can-1g-468x234.jpg" alt="campbell-soup-can-1g" width="468" height="234" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-92355" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/campbell-soup-can-1c-468x624.jpg" alt="campbell-soup-can-1c" width="468" height="624" /></p>
<p>In 1981 Warhol visited Colorado State University in Fort Collins, which was holding an exhibition of his work in the art building. The acclaimed artist signed one of three <a href="http://bikingforbirds.blogspot.ca/2014/07/day-195-alls-well-more-updates-to-come.html" target="_blank">huge replica Campbell&#8217;s Soup can</a>s mounted outside the University Center for the Arts. In the summer of 2013, the <a href="http://www.westword.com/arts/andy-warhols-enormous-campbells-soup-can-makes-a-comeback-at-csu-5814423" target="_blank">restored signed can</a> was unveiled at its new location at the UCA.</p>
<h4>Soup Can-tonese</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-92371" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/campbell-soup-can-2a-468x313.jpg" alt="Giant Campbell's soup can, subway, Admiralty station, Hong Kong." width="468" height="313" /></p>
<p>Campbell&#8217;s Soup cans can look a little different in other parts of the world &#8211; take Hong Kong, for instance. The <a href="http://www.lifeforcemagazine.com/feb2013/index_13.htm" target="_blank">jumbo can above</a>, snapped in the city&#8217;s Admiralty subway station, depicts a flavor one wouldn&#8217;t expect in such a region.</p>

<p>Californians Steve &amp; Chris White employed a little creativity and a lot of red &amp; white paint when designing their one-of-a-kind <a href="http://www.communitychickens.com/campbells-soup-chicken-coop-mmm-mmm-good/" target="_blank">Campbell&#8217;s Chicken Soup Chicken Coop</a>. The pair adapted a hexagonal dog pergola (whatever that is) to suit the needs of their chickens, who thankfully can&#8217;t read.</p>
<h4>Bigger in Texas</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-92374" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/campbell-soup-can-4a-468x319.jpg" alt="campbell-soup-can-4a" width="468" height="319" /></p>
<p>You&#8217;ll find this jumbo Campbell&#8217;s Soup can storage tank at <a href="http://johnsonsranch.net/index.htm" target="_blank">Johnson&#8217;s Ranch</a> in Uncertain, Texas. The oddly-named east Texas town only has about 150 residents, all of whom could presumably be fed for days if the tank really held tomato soup. Speaking of which, <em>&#8220;The public restrooms at JOHNSON&#8217;S have been updated and improved.&#8221;</em> Good to know!</p>

<p>Looking for <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2013/09/22/the-unloved-boats-8-abandoned-cruise-ships-liners/" target="_blank">love</a> in all the right places? Replicas of <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2015/08/23/artist-nikita-nomerz-gives-russian-buildings-a-new-look/" target="_blank">artist</a> Robert Indiana&#8217;s iconic Pop Art “LOVE” sculpture have spread to the 4 corners of the globe.</p>
<p><span id="more-89070"></span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-89079" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/LOVE-sculpture-1d-468x281.jpg" alt="LOVE-sculpture-1d" width="468" height="281" /></p>

<p>Robert Indiana (formerly Robert Clark) first expressed the essential iconography of <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/duceduc/11309289746/" target="_blank">&#8220;LOVE&#8221;</a> in 1958 but it wasn&#8217;t until 1964 that the image garnered wide public notice, via a Christmas card commissioned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. One of the first three-dimensional <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/66492658@N06/6483634603/" target="_blank">LOVE sculptures</a> has stood, since 1970, in front of the <a href="http://www.imamuseum.org/blog/2014/02/14/an-act-of-love/" target="_blank">Indianapolis Museum of Art</a>.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-89074" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/LOVE-sculpture-1c-468x369.jpg" alt="LOVE-sculpture-1c" width="468" height="369" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-89073" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/LOVE-sculpture-1a-468x311.jpg" alt="LOVE-sculpture-1a" width="468" height="311" /></p>
<p>Like many metal artworks designed to stand out in the open, the <a href="http://collection.imamuseum.org/artwork/28170/" target="_blank">IMA&#8217;s LOVE sculpture</a> is made from Cor-ten steel, an alloy that weathers to a rich, slightly iridescent, purplish-brown patina after years of seasonal changes. The sculpture measures 12&#8242; x 12&#8242; x 6&#8242; and has recently undergone a structural and aesthetic restoration.</p>
<h4>I LOVE New York</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-89078" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/LOVE-sculpture-2c-468x361.jpg" alt="LOVE-sculpture-2c" width="468" height="361" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-89076" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/LOVE-sculpture-2a-468x351.jpg" alt="LOVE-sculpture-2a" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-89077" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/LOVE-sculpture-2b-468x351.jpg" alt="LOVE-sculpture-2b" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p>There are currently around 50 LOVE sculptures installed in public and private spaces worldwide. Some are better-known than others, mainly due to their proximity to pedestrian traffic. One of the <a href="http://www.siws.fr/2013/05/25/28807/" target="_blank">first</a> NYC LOVE sculptures was installed at 59th Street and 5th Avenue in 1971, while perhaps the most prominent NYC LOVE sculpture stands at the corner of 6th Avenue and 55th Street in Manhattan. Kudos to Flickr users <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/chee917/8475553936/" target="_blank">Chee917</a> and Robert Wright (<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/wrightfamilyarchives/8318344609/" target="_blank">wrightrkuk</a>), who snapped the sculpture in 2012.</p>
<h4>LOVE Is Blue</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-89080" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/LOVE-sculpture-3a-468x351.jpg" alt="Vancouver LOVE sculpture" width="468" height="351" /></p>

<p>Most of the world&#8217;s LOVE sculptures have red painted facades with blue or blue &amp; green sides to match Indiana&#8217;s original MOMA card and popular USPS stamp. This isn&#8217;t a must, however, as Indiana <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/22/arts/design/robert-indiana-assumes-one-work-has-swamped-his-career.html?_r=0" target="_blank">famously neglected</a> to properly copyright the work. <h4>Reflections of LOVE</h4>

<p>Photographer <a href="http://Langen Foundation in Neuss-Holzheim, Germany" target="_blank">Wassily from nl</a> brings us the striking scene above. Featuring a large LOVE sculpture set into the reflecting pool outside the Langen Foundation&#8217;s main building in Neuss-Holzheim, Germany, the photo dates from 2005 shortly after the building opened.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75144" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/caricature-chairs-1-468x309.jpg" alt="caricature chairs 1" width="468" height="309" /></p>
<p>The Simpsons and other characters and pop culture figures are translated into minimalist chair designs in this eclectic collection from<a href="http://www.56thstudio.com/#!caricature-as-furniture/c1knj"> 56th Studio</a>. Can you guess who the rest are supposed to be? The designers took the most recognizable features of each and distilled them to their most basic forms. Naturally, the exaggerated hairstyles of Bart, Marge and Lisa make them easy to spot, while the others are subtler.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75139" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/caricature-chairs-3-468x262.jpg" alt="caricature chairs 3" width="468" height="262" /></p>

<p>&#8220;At the beginning, this project is an exploration of minimal illustration that has eventually expanded into pieces of furniture,&#8221; say the esigners. &#8220;We believe that objects possess power of communication, therefore, we decide to take a tongue-in-cheek look at investigating Pop and Hollywood Culture in tangible forms, in hoping that it would make the line that separates Graphic from Furniture become thinner.&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-75142" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/caricature-chairs-4-468x644.jpg" alt="caricature chairs 4" width="468" height="644" /></p>

<p>Inspired in part by the &#8216;cubical appearance&#8217; of iconic singer Grace Jones, the project definitely blurs the lines between art objects and functional furniture. Jones is represented by one big pair of lips, and you might be able to spot Harry Potter and his owl, too.</p>

<p><!--wsa:gooold-->Iconic paintings by artists like Leonardo DaVinci, Sandro Botticelli and Georges Seurat have become an intrinsic part of our cultural landscape, even as we progress far beyond the time periods in which they were completed. And, whether paying tribute or appropriating, making comments on the art itself or what we have become, today&#8217;s artists place these works in the modern context using photography, Photoshop, and other technology.</p>
<p><span id="more-31718"></span></p>
<h4>Re-Imagined as Modern Photographs</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-31720" title="altered-paintings-photographs-1" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/altered-paintings-photographs-1.jpg" width="468" height="574" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-31721" title="altered-paintings-photographs-2" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/altered-paintings-photographs-2.jpg" width="468" height="294" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-31722" title="altered-paintings-photographs-3" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/altered-paintings-photographs-3.jpg" width="468" height="600" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-31724" title="altered-paintings-photographs-4" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/altered-paintings-photographs-41.jpg" width="468" height="600" /></p>
<h6>(images via: <a href="http://www.booooooom.com/2011/10/04/remake-submissions/">booooooom.com</a>, <a href="http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2011/05/office_sunday_afternoon.html">nymag</a>, <a href="http://www.artchive.com/artchive/S/seurat/jatte.jpg.html">artchive</a>)</h6>
<p>These amazing recreations of classic paintings are the product of a collaborative project by art blog Booooooom.com and Adobe Remake. The series called for participants to submit photographs that capture the essence of a famous work of art or photography. Some stay loyal to the originals, while others give them a more modern update.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-31725" title="altered-paintings-photographs-5" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/altered-paintings-photographs-5.jpg" width="468" height="600" /></p>
<p>Of course, such photographic recreations of paintings are not uncommon. Another recent example is this shot of the cast of NBC&#8217;s comedy series The Office, replicating the painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat.</p>
<h4>Altered to Reflect Modern Life</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-31726" title="altered-paintings-banksy-1" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/altered-paintings-banksy-1.jpg" width="468" height="583" /></p>

<p>Paintings of centuries past often depict idyllic scenes of simpler times, unmarred by pollution, technology and other aspects of modern society. Leave it to Banksy to intentionally cheapen these scenes, infiltrating their beauty and sense of worth with commentary on the state of modern art, and the world in general. Recreated in oils, works like Jack Vettriano&#8217;s &#8216;Singing Butler&#8217;, Ed Hopper&#8217;s &#8216;Nighthawks&#8217; and Monet&#8217;s &#8216;Water Lilies&#8217; hung at a gallery in Britain which was also occupied by live rats.</p>
<h4>Infiltrated by Star Wars Characters</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-31729" title="altered-paintings-star-wars-1" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/altered-paintings-star-wars-1.jpg" width="468" height="655" /></p>

<p>The impact of Star Wars on pop culture can&#8217;t be overstated. Countless works of art in all media, including <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2010/08/26/how-graffiti-can-be-even-cooler-just-add-star-wars/">graffiti</a>, <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2010/09/18/star-wars-invades-dubai-in-digital-art-series/">digital art</a>, <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2008/12/06/private-lives-toys/">photography</a>, <a href="https://weburbanist.com/2010/07/24/downward-facing-wookie-amazing-star-wars-yoga/">performance art</a> and even<a href="https://weburbanist.com/2010/08/10/star-wars-cakes-that-will-make-you-a-fan/"> cakes</a>, have been devoted to the series. So it was only a matter of time before Star Wars fans digitally altered famous paintings to include Princess Leia, R2D2, Chewbacca, Yoda and everyone else in the series. Chewy as Leonardo&#8217;s Vitruvian Man, Darth Vader taking the place of Napoleon Bonaparte and the infamous bikini immortalized in marble are just a few of the entries that were produced for a number of Star Wars-related Photoshop contests at Worth 1000.</p>
<h4>Created with Digital Technology</h4>

<p>Drawing on Intel technologies including Intel PCs running CAD software, 3D animation and conductive ink, collaborators in Intel&#8217;s &#8216;Remastered Project&#8217; have interpreted works like The Last Supper in entirely unexpected ways. LED lights and electronic ink make the stars of Van Gogh&#8217;s The Starry Night come alive, literally sparkling before our eyes; Edvard Munch&#8217;s The Scream is evoked with an installation using bricks, TV screens and looping animations. Each project can be seen in photographs and videos at <a href="http://www.intel.com/en_uk/remastered/remaster.htm?artist=mt">Intel.com.</a></p>
<h4>Re-Created with Vegetables</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-31735" title="altered-paintings-vegetable-museum-1" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/altered-paintings-vegetable-museum-1.jpg" width="468" height="552" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-31736" title="altered-paintings-vegetable-museum-2" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/altered-paintings-vegetable-museum-2.jpg" width="468" height="600" /></p>
<h6>(images via: <a href="http://www.parisbeijingphotogallery.com/main/the_vegetable_museum.asp">the vegetable museum</a>)</h6>
<p>The scenes are familiar, from the composition to the colors to the lighting, but there&#8217;s something off about these paintings. Get closer, and you&#8217;ll realize what it is: in place of painted human figures and landscapes are broccoli, potatoes, squash and other vegetables. Chinese artist Ju Duoqi says she got the idea for &#8216;The Vegetable Museum&#8217; after making herself an outfit out of peas.</p>
<p>&#8220;In the summer of ’06, I bought several kilograms of peas, and sat there quietly for two days peeling them, before stringing them on a wire and turning them into a skirt, a top, a headdress and a magic wand. I used a remote control to take a photo of myself in them, and named it Pea Beauty Pageant. That was my first work of vegetable art.</p>
<p>In the two years that followed, I often dressed up as a housewife, leisurely strolling to the market in a serious search for fun. I would often pace in front of the vegetable stalls, picking things up, thinking and putting them back, trying to figure out which positions made them more interesting. The different types, shapes and colors of the vegetables, with a bit of rearranging, can make for a rich source of imagery. Fresh, withered, rotting, dried, pickled, boiled, fried, they all come out different. I no longer needed a model, as they all became actors and even props.&#8221;</p>
<h4>Edited in Photoshop</h4>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-31737" title="altered-paintings-photoshop1" alt="" src="https://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/altered-paintings-photoshop1.gif" width="468" /></p>

<h6>(images via: <a href="http://design-milk.com/michael-guppy/">design milk</a>)</h6>
<p>There&#8217;s more than a little something missing from these images of Botticelli&#8217;s Birth of Venus, Leonardo&#8217;s Mona Lisa and Munch&#8217;s The Scream. Artist Michael Guppy has used Photoshop to remove the central elements, leaving behind the selection border of each image as an animated gif.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.itsnicethat.com/articles/the-graduates-2011-michael-guppy">The artist explains</a> that a common theme in his work is the social and cultural side of technology. “The web is a perfect example of how technology transforms society, and we’re right amidst it. This is where the main influence for my work stems from, examining how we interact with the web and how it might change.”</p>
